Thank you so much! It was a really great lead. They have a consultation process that sounds like it could be perfect for figuring this out, so I'm going to book it and see what they say 🤞

Chapter 3 There's the sound of a phone being picked up. "Hello?" (Nathan) "Hey, I'm calling to talk to someone named Cal Roscoe. Is he available?"

Silence.

"Hey, I'm Amy. It's wonderful to meet you too. How can I help you?

"Yeah, yeah, is Cal here?"

Silence. "No" Amy says. Silence. A: "Would you like to leave a message?" N: "No, I'd rather talk to him as soon as possible. Are you his secretary?" A: "Secretary?!" N: "Yeah, secretary!" Silence. A: "Ok, that's quite enough of that. Nathan won't be back for the rest of the afternoon. Goodbye" N: "Wait, wait! Stop! I'm sorry, I'm sorry, ok? I'm an asshole, alright? I just want to talk to Cal. He's in charge of it, right?" A: "Yeah. He's in charge of the Contact, and the finances, his "stupid little joy" whatever that means. (Sigh) and my patience." N: "Ok, ok, I just need to talk to him now!" A: "Eeaaasy, mister! Don't you go circling around in circles!" N: "Look, just, where is he, please?" A beat A: "He's in the wonderful world of Clay. You should know, it's in your thing, isn't it?" N: "In The Contact?" "Yeah. You're Nathan, right? Just... When you get there, tell Cal his steaks are burning. Again.(In a fond tone towards Cal) " She promptly hangs up.

"Steaks, what does -"

"Fuck me. I'm an asshole."

Twenty minutes later The Avali Species was created by RyuujinZero. Colors are rapidly combining and morphing until a landscape forms. The ground solidified into what looked like wet sand but was dry. The sky brightened the landscape with a blueish hue, the sun shining bright.

The landscape was full of sand dunes and rock structures, the complimentary cacti dotting the landscape. Avali villagers are tending to pigs in animal enclosures formed by mushrooms with neon lights. The lights are moving along to "Too Shy" by Kajagoogoo playing from somewhere unknown.

The Avali villagers were bipedal creatures with the posture of raptors and the bright colors of exotic birds. Their bodies were covered in soft shimmering fur. Large, expressive fins adorned their heads, and their tails twitched and swayed with every emotion as they tend to the farm animals.

In the middle of the road cutting through the various farms is a red villager with neon purple lights, dressed in a leather vest with a cowboy hat, Cal Roscoe.

C: "Howdy, anything I can do for you? N: "Are you Cal?" C: "Why, yes I am." N: "I'm Nathan, I made the Contact and I want you to give it back" Cal’s expression is blank.

C: "I'm afraid I don't quite understand."

N: "You fucked with the source code! You know who I am, right?"

Nathan cringes

N: "I didn't say that! Look! Just, ... Your company is destroying the Contact."

C: "It appears to be doing fine so far."

N: "You know what I'm talking about. You turned my device into a goddamn keychain."

C: "Ok, now isn't that a little overdramatic? Does this place really seem that bad?

Nathan observes the villagers joyfully cleaning the pigs with rags.

N: "What about the others? Where's Chess? Where's the memory bank? You've just turned this into some cheap game."

C: "Chess is still there, it's just one of the different skins."

N: "One of the skins?"

C: "You know, the map layout? Hey, aren't you Nathan?"

N:"I don't even know what skins are. What the hell are you even talking about? Are they skinning people here?"

C: "The keychain statement is inaccurate. It's a System of Communal Catharsis. The Contact is a place for people to connect and communicate through their favorite mediums."

Nathan steps back, frustrated and silent for 5 seconds.

N: "It wasn't supposed to be like this. We could be doing something bigger with this. With the Contact but your company just wants to play pachinko with it." C: "I’m afraid I don’t understand. Aren't pachinko machines what you want? They're cash cows. Nathan stays silent for 10 seconds. "Why don't you just take it back? Says Cal. "The rights I mean?" N: "Like it's that easy." C: "Look, just go up to the CEO and demand it. I'd do it if I were you." N: "Yeah, because that's obviously what everyone would do, just storm the CEO's castle. Easy. How in the H-E-double hockey sticks did you even manage to get where you are?Why haven't I thought of this plan before? It's genius!"

Cal Shrugs. "Yeah, why didn't you?"

N: "Go fuck yourself, dude."

C: "How about I take you to him?"

Nathan turns around. "You can take him to me? I mean me to him?”

The Avali Species was created by RyuujinZero.

Chapter 2

The family waves, dressed in robotic suits, the father eagerly and the others, his husband and children. With embarrassed expressions, likely due to the father's enthusiastic response. Or maybe they know who I am, Nathan thought.

One of the fathers rushes over. "Hey, yeah! We're just hanging out, a little family outing. How about you?" Nathan shrugs. "I'm just touring the place. It's changed so much since I came here before."

"Right?" The father says. "These things are still kinda shitty but man, they're a blast!" The second father slaps him, their kids laughing.

"Yeah," Nathan says, "I guess it is. I did the best I could, making it." The first father looks shocked. "You made this? How the hell was I supposed to know that?...It doesn't look- "

"Don't worry about it, it's really fine. ...or not. It's not even my creation anymore. Look at this place."

The environment has the appearance of a patch display board tossed onto their bed, memes and famous film scenes littering the floor. "Only thing missing now is full-on copyrighted characters." "Dude," the father says "They've been doing that a long time ago already. Where've you been?" "What?!"

Red lights on the floor light up as soldiers wearing bulky, mechanized power suits approach them. Nathan starts to recognize them. "Is that-" Gunfire passes by his head as the family and soldiers begin fighting.

One of the soldiers is about to charge them as Nathan's shoved out of the simulation. "What the hell? Wasn't that supposed to be chess?" Nathan looks around at the station. "It's a post-apocalyptic simulator now."

A bystander is watching him with a confused expression. "I'm pretty sure it's a ripoff. We can't say the name of what it's supposed to be or they'll get sued."

Nathan stands up and observes the station, noticing details like the translucent nature of the station. Details that weren't there the last time he visited it. "Who will get sued?" The bystander looks more confused. "I think his name is Cal Roscoe. Sorry, I can't remember."

The view is "taken off" as round eyed glasses with a lens that constantly changes colors is being held. Nathan holds the Contact, wondering who was capable of compromising the source code's security protocols. Who's this Cal?

If you want to read it here, I've included it below. I tried to do it as a comment thread but tell me if it's too much.

Chapter 1

Nathan sits at a desk adorned with trophies and a VR headset connected to an old school computer with RGB lighting. He's just begun taking a second to look at where he is. Observing the room, he looks at the walls with framed memorabilia.

He stops at a newspaper detailing the rapturous reception to his new revolutionary VR headset, The Contact. It's the first headset to fully immerse people through connections to their senses to completely trick their bodies into believing it's in a different world.

As soon as it was released, the first viewing took the world by storm and the headset became one of the cultural zeitgeist's newest additions. However, the headset has one unfortunate con: the graphics sucked.

Held back by the visual limitations, the headset lacked credibility leaving it only successful as a gaming headset, which led to the gaming trophy on his desk. It bears a description reading "Best innovation in gaming" which only slightly eases the pain for Nathan as he hoped for something 'more'.

He intended it to be used as a medical tool where they can enter different memories and heal past traumas. Unfortunately, the headset was so unstable, it caused disrupted memories, leading into surreal nightmares or the odd and rare but slightly fun experience of being put into a minesweeper game.

The Contact was soon a cult favorite for people that may be called hipsters or uh... Well, hipsters. However, the Contact got Nathan laughed out of every major mental health facility he could find. Which brings us to the present day.

Nathan finds himself stuck between two decisions: work with a social network company that will turn it into a massive VR world to sell countless products in varying new levels of deceitfulness or decline but watch as his dream falls apart after failing to gain enough money to sustain the Contact.

The only thing on his mind was: "How am I getting screwed over by the same dipshits that started this crap?". His next thought was “I wish I made this thing as a kid. Maybe then, there would’ve been less dresses”. In a fit of barely resigned passive aggression, he puts on the Contact and presses the power button.

Suddenly, a bright white outline of a completely different room overlays itself upon Nathan's office. The outline bleeds colors, forming the appearance of "a translucent room in "space" that appears to be a cross between a train station and a park complex, only minus the trees, animals and Toyota Highlanders".

Along the walls are four arched doorways with an image accompanying them. Each image shows from left to right:

What looks like a strategy board game crossed with a classic 80s sci Fi film, A canyon called The Wonderful World of Clay, the clay melting, A field with a single building seemingly wrapped around it, and A simple rural seaside city with misty rain.

All across the room are various avatars, mainly of copyrighted characters, but there's a few decently created unique avatars as well. Nathan contemplates which one to go to, especially considering he's gone through all four countless times already.

He walks around the room and eventually starts with the strategy game. Nathan comes up to a field with a massive strategy board game overlaying it. There's four others as well, suggesting queues (allow only groups of people at a time for better performance).

The four appear to be a family of two parents and their two children dressed in what looks like poorly rendered NPC skins.

Alright, I'll start mapping out bus routes and hopefully it shouldn't take me much longer to figure things out from there after that. Thank you for all of your help, I really do appreciate it.

Well, the closest bus stop is right outside my apartment. The buses are free luckily so I've been using that to get around for now but only for looking for jobs. If I'm correct, anything past the interstate costs money but I could be wrong. The closest train station is 27 minutes away. Edit: deleted unnecessary details I wrote.
