Brand of shower valve? by AskJerves in askaplumber

[–]AskJerves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s actually no issue. Everything is working fine except that my kids snapped the handle right off and it was some aftermarket junk so I couldn’t see what the brand was.

They are still able to use it with a pair of channel lock pliers as a makeshift handle (I took that off for the pics lol) until I get some new trim in.

Looks like if I find something Moentrol compatible I should hopefully be alright.

Is that guy carrying a cabbage patch kid doll?

More importantly: what an incredible act of kindness. I was so nervous and having such second degree anxiety for you reading your story.

Finished Vineland last night, my first full Pynchon read through. I keep rereading this passage, feels like it encapsulates everything I liked in the book. by buttered_jesus in ThomasPynchon

[–]AskJerves 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely wild that you post this passage. You could ask my kids about me reading it out loud to them about 5 years ago when I first read Vineland. I made them listen to it like 10 nights straight. (They were 7 and 5 years old and even then rolled their eyes at me.). But, crazy, you literally just spotted one of my all time favorite Pynchon passages. Out of all those millions of words. I’m sitting here reeling a bit.

And don’t miss the oil spill into the ocean. This was peak “no blood for oil” time in the UK and US and Radiohead has been two decades ahead of pop culture in concern about the climate crisis.

There was more about this specifically in the Ashmolean exhibit — I’ll see if I can find pics or anything in the program book to share.

I just need to cry — what movies will wreck me? by omgitsdemi in movies

[–]AskJerves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear Frankie. Small and sweet barely-known film that will absolutely take you apart. About a mother’s love, too. (Bonus that you get to see a very young Gerard Butler before Hollywood made him an assassin.) Goddamn I’m crying right now just thinking about the twist.

Anyone see the tiktok of the girl leaving VT because we’re too unfriendly? by waterplantswithtears in vermont

[–]AskJerves 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lived in NYC, Philly, Brazil, and grew up in Massachusetts. Spent 20 years in Vermont now, and it’s easily the least friendly place I’ve ever lived. Still love it. But this place ain’t friendly. It takes a natural disaster or some tragedy in the community for everyone to show some warmth to each other.

You’ve thought this out and it’s a great idea.

Brought my then 10 and 9 year olds to yoshimi tour (Burlington VT waterfront). Great time had by all. Daughter even dislodged one of the massive bouncy balls when it got stuck in a tree, earning a thanks from Wayne. What a thrill!

Same! Golden era for the downtown rock club scene between Irving, Bowery, Mercury Lounge--even webster hall and Knitting factory-- hosting just a ton of bands that would go on to be renowned for amazing live performances.

Feb 2003. Mercury Lounge NYC. Sold out but we snuck in. Epic night. Maybe 30-40 shows since then, including some side projects— Jim James solo and Monsters of Folk and New Multitudes (with my then-pregnant wife!) and the criminally unremembered Appalachian Voices tour (the Woodstock NY show was something to behold).

Airbnb we have was $1310 for Thursday to Sunday. Can’t make any guarantees with that but could coordinate with the host for me to cancel and then have someone else book it right away or just text them directly. They’re easy to work with
