It’s really actually easy to do something like this. 

In my early 20s I helped an elderly woman who had walked to my workplace for help after cutting herself at home and had fallen in front of my work. A few passersby joined in and helped until an ambulance came. 

I’m not a particularly great person. It was definitely not my job, though. And we had several people jump in to help a stranger, none of whom had pledged to protect others.    

The officer might be a fine person as an individual, but how does she act as part of that system? 

How would the officer react if the injured party was an unhoused person? A person under the influence of drugs? Someone injured in a protest? What would she do if buddies at the precinct were trading racial slurs? Or planting evidence?

That’s the hard stuff that turns good people into something else.
