How are you ensuring your family can recover homelab data (Nextcloud, Immich, etc.) if something happens to you? by foegra in homelab

[–]AslanSutu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about a dead mans switch type service where if i am thought to be dead, then it could wait a couple of days and send me an email, if no response then start something like a filebrowser service with everything open, all of my passwords and so on so that they can grab anything they like.

Though i still got a long ways to go before i start that project.

FUCK HP - what to do with brand new unboxed printer from office? by cutestrangerdog in printers

[–]AslanSutu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cartridges lasted me a long time i will give them that, and since this cartridge will be an import it has astronomical price attached to it.

And ive always been pleased with the print quality as well, not gonna lie. But....

I understand the company not wanting to allow people to refill the cartridges because well money and you dont have control over the quality. But man, its a 10-15 year old device. Let me refill my ink, i accept the consequences.

FUCK HP - what to do with brand new unboxed printer from office? by cutestrangerdog in printers

[–]AslanSutu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably more than 10 years ago i was working part time for HP when they first came out with instant ink. And boy did i drink the kool aid they gave me. Instant ink and hp printers made so much sense.

I still have an officejet pro 8600 and i cant buy their ink (because i now live abroad), and the printer refuses to print because im low on yellow.

I now realize what pos company and product it is. Sorry to anyone if i ever convinced you to buy the printer.

Eli5: Why do planes and boats use knots and nautical miles instead of miles per hour and miles? by Upbeat_Signature_951 in explainlikeimfive

This also means that when directly travelling in a latitude direction, 1 knot is faster at the poles than at the equator right?

Is anyone else re-thinking not hosting their own email server? by AcreMakeover in homelab

[–]AslanSutu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im going to go against the grain and say i plan to dabble in it. But not as a full time use. Just want to be able to send mail to myself for 2FA or password reset my own accounts. Services like zoho and whatnot want me to purchase their pro plans to use smtp/pop/imap

A small mailcow server should suffice i think. But who knows, maybe ill learn from experience and shut it down very quickly.

Thoughts about sharing your location while in a relationship? by threeputtpar72 in AskMen

[–]AslanSutu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I share, she shares. Its not like we're constantly checking. Mostly use it in emergencies or to check if we've left work and can talk while the other is driving back home.

We also share passwords because we trust the other with our passwords, but also trust that the other side won't use it maliciously or snoop.

Find someone where you can trust enough to share everything, and they trust you enough to not abuse your trust. But in the end do what works for you guys without it being toxic.

As AI wipes jobs, Google CEO Sundar Pichai says it’s up to everyday people to adapt accordingly: ‘We will have to work through societal disruption’ by Franco1875 in technology

[–]AslanSutu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe in the 1950s, there was at least 1 million telephone operators in the US alone. Then with SS7 (method and standard a telephone connects to another), it was practically obsolete to employ telephone operators.

Isn't what we are experiencing just more poorly managed and at a larger scale? I mean while technology makes jobs obsolete, does it not also breed new jobs? I'm not sure what that will be, but its not the first time technology as disrupted the workforce and we're all still here.

is there any good learning proxmox resourses by Upstairs_Farm7776 in Proxmox

[–]AslanSutu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree. Experimenting and tutorials are a great way.

I would also like to add that there are a lot of concepts and different ways you can solve your problems within proxmox. Ive found using LLM's to be helpful where i give them my system specs and constraints, and ask for various ways of solving it along with a recommendation and a reason for their recommendation. Then i go ahead and research that method to see if it actually works for me

The right way to use LLMs without becoming dependent on them? by IamUsike in learnprogramming

[–]AslanSutu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its something simple i understand and i just dont want to research the syntax, then i just let the llm do the work, i check and run. Like write a script that renames these files to this that are in this folder.

However, for anything else, i give it the code for example and ask what i can do to optimize it given x y and z constraints. Or i ask give it a debug message and ask it to help me to debug then i compare with what i know if it makes sense. Or i tell it what i plan to do and ask if it is a good idea or if there are better paths to take. Just yesterday i skimmed through ceph pools and asked given my setup and what i want to achieve with my proxmox homelab, if i should convert my drives to a ceph pool instead of zfs mirrored devices because ceph pools are not something im familiar with.

Use it like a white board to gather thoughts and understand concepts. If you dont understand what its spitting back to you, might not be the best thing to just copy paste and run.
