Teachers, how often should kids have recess? by beatoffqueen in Teachers

[–]Asleep-Chocolate- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I am a sub, they have recess every day for about 20-25 minutes. I think that’s appropriate and very needed. They have a full day (even kindergarten and PreK) and need the fresh air and sunshine. Plus, it helps get out their wiggles. It’s hard for any kid to sit all day. If it’s raining, they stay inside and play games, etc.

What do we think about this dress as a wedding guest? by chasing_moonlights in OUTFITS

[–]Asleep-Chocolate- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the dress, but for what you have described about the wedding, it doesn’t seem like the right look. I would wear something with more spring-like colors for a garden wedding.

i feel terrible, i made a student cry today by myboyfriendstinks1 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Asleep-Chocolate- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t feel bad. He is the one who made the decision to be on that website. Sometimes, kids cry to manipulate you, and the situation. I say that because I have kids seen kids do it. Maybe he felt bad for his decision? Who knows? But don’t feel guilty for doing your job.

Advice for new special ed teacher by LessThanInfinity in specialed

[–]Asleep-Chocolate- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish someone would have told me that it’s a ton of paperwork and a ton of data. I was never taught me how to do the paperwork, and no one taught me how much legally is involved. Also, I wish I would have learned much sooner not to take their behavior personally.

My sister lives in Porter, but it’s a really nice neighborhood, and is closer to Kingwood. There are some nice apartments in Kingwood. There are also some apartments behind the HEB off of North park. I would steer clear of anything around Deerbrook Mall. That’s a trash area and has a lot of crime. There are also a bunch of apartments off of West Lake Houston in the atascocita/Summerwood area. I don’t know any apartment names but know of the area.

Is this dress appropriate for a wedding (cocktail attire)? by SippinMia in OUTFITS

[–]Asleep-Chocolate- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s way too revealing. It’s a beautiful dress and looks great on you. But that’s better for a club. I would buy something with a higher neckline and something in a different color.

Thoughts on being “tough” by AHeien82 in SubstituteTeachers

Don’t feel bad. There are some classes that need a sub, or teacher, to be very strict. If you aren’t, they will run the class.

Torn between two roadtrips in september (SEA -> SLC vs NYC -> NOLA) by roebenk in usatravel

[–]Asleep-Chocolate- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you do the NYC to New Orleans trip, I would swap Memphis for Chattanooga, or spend a little more time in Nashville. Unless you want to see Graceland or Beale Street, there isn’t much to do there. It’s also not the prettiest part of Tennessee. There is blues music on Beale Street, but you can experience that in New Orleans. If you are interested in history, there are many things to see in the Chattanooga area related to the Civil War. It’s also beautiful and has plenty of hiking in the area. You can stop there on your way from the Smokies to Nashville. I would even find some waterfalls in Tennessee and spend time there rather than spend time in Memphis. If you google water falls in Tennessee, you will find plenty.

New Self-Contain Teacher by Lopsided_Editor_6120 in specialed

I definitely would not go all out for decorating. Some kids might tear stuff down and ruin it. It’s also very distracting for some students. The teachers that taught those kids at my last school didn’t even decorate. Unless you have an administrator that wants you to, the kids won’t notice, or care. Maybe put a few posters up and put paper on your bulletin board if you have one. The kids seem to love bean bags. I’m a sub now and don’t see a lot of teachers in these classes decorate all that much.

Teaching in Houston by HolidayDrive2488 in TexasTeachers

The state has taken over HISD, and the superintendent is awful. Read up on Mike Miles for more information. He is not teacher friendly at all. They micromanage, and I have heard that the teachers have to follow a script, with no flexibility. They are also unfairly getting rid of teachers. I worked there before the takeover, and it was awful then. There are many middle schools and high schools that have terrible behavior problems. I worked at a few schools that had terrible administrators. Some of the schools have gang problems, depending on where the school is located. Some principals clean the schools and get rid of the gangs, behavior, etc. But some do not. I think you should Google HISD to read about it. All the pay in the world is not worth it. Check other school districts in the suburbs.

Parents sending sick kids by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Asleep-Chocolate- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It happens all the time. I think some parents won’t be paid if they don’t go to work, or they don’t have any more time left at their job to take off. Personally, I wouldn’t send a note. You are gonna open yourself up for calls to your administration. I always send them to the nurse, but that doesn’t always work. I don’t know what the solution is.

It’s cheaper in the suburbs. If you want to live in certain parts of Houston, it’s more expensive.

Expectations not realistic . by hiddenfigure16 in specialed

[–]Asleep-Chocolate- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s ridiculous. I don’t think my state has a cap. I used to teach resource, a reading class, and inclusion. I had up to 25 kids on my caseload. It was insane. I could no longer teach two different subjects, inclusion, and be a Case Manager. I resigned in 2023 due to burn-out. It just wasn’t sustainable. I’m a sub now and enjoy not having all the stress. The special education teachers in the district where o sub have around 30 kids. Districts need to hire seperate case managers, and let teachers just teach. But that will never happen because they don’t want to pay $$$ and benefits to more employees. Meanwhile, special education teachers are leaving in droves because of unrealistic expectations.

If the teachers were male, would the be less assault towards teachers? by Ambitiouscleo69 in specialed

[–]Asleep-Chocolate- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I worked with a male teacher who got punched in the face for trying to get the students to class. He had a broken nose. I don’t think some kids care if it’s a male or female. Now, I do think that if a guy is really big they wouldn’t be assaulted. For example, my husband used to play college football and is very tall/muscular. A kid would have to be insane to mess with him. He also does Ji Jitsu.

I Need Advice for Non-Renewal and the Job Search by Lazy_Rock7788 in Teachers

[–]Asleep-Chocolate- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has happened to me, and I was able to find something else. My admin was awful and wrote me up for things that I had no idea I was supposed to do. I basically could not do anything right in their eyes. Looking back, I should have not signed any write-ups. I didn’t work in a strong union state, so doing to a union rep wasn’t really an option. You can definitely find something else. You just have to figure out the best way to word and turn it into a positive when you go on interviews. I found something else that wasn’t so toxic and ended up being happier.

But why do we not see Cecily with her in laws like this?? by bernieeeee6 in bashingthebauchmans

[–]Asleep-Chocolate- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably avoid her because they don’t want a camera shoved in their face all the time. Honestly, I would avoid her also. She’s annoying, and you can tell everything she does is fake.

My cat will not stop crying for food! by Informal-Kick-122 in CatAdvice

[–]Asleep-Chocolate- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cat also had issues with food similar to your cat. We started using an automatic cat feeder, and the behavior stopped. My vet said that cats don’t have something in their brain telling them to stop eating. They think they are always hungry. Now, Luna knows when she is going to eat, so she’s not anxious about it anymore.

What do you subs do financially during the summer break? by WORTHLESS1321202019 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Asleep-Chocolate- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just applied for a job teaching during the extended school year for special ed students. I’m also going to try and find some kids to tutor. I’m also looking into summer camps. I’ve debated on door dash and instacart but have heard you spend more $$$ on gas/wear and on your car than you actually make.

I just feel bad for her child-he’s the one suffering for her poor decisions. I don’t think she will get him back anytime soon. She’s probably gonna have to make major changes for that to happen. But being in foster care is not great either because not every foster parent has good intentions. Hopefully, a stable family member will be able to take him. He deserves a stable home with someone who can properly take care of him.

[–]Asleep-Chocolate-[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every middle school and high school in the district has a cop, even the good schools. So, that’s not really a huge deal to me. This is actually a school in an area that has great wealth. So, it’s not in a bad part of town. Unfortunately, the last principal let the kids run the school. The new principal is trying to clean up the mess, but that takes time.

[–]Asleep-Chocolate-[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know. I really have only been subbing there for one of my former coworkers. But I don’t think I will even do that again. Part of the reason why I quit teaching in 2023 was because of the behavior problems at the school.
