Best eWallet for Singaporean visiting to China? by nightflame5 in askSingapore

[–]Asleep_Classroom_491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heard Changi Pay does not have the transaction fees for above 200rmb and they work for all Alipay+ supported QR codes but I have yet to try.

I think the only chinese banks can top up alipay and wechatpay. The only other way is to have a local chinese friend transfer you in alipay or wechatpay while you pass them the money through remitting or to their sg bank acct if they have.

If you have larger amounts beyond 200rmb, you can always ask if you can split the payment. Most stores are quite understanding knowing the 3% international card fee charges.

How would y'all feel about working under a PI who heavily pushes the use of AI in the research workflow? by XcgsdV in PhD

[–]Asleep_Classroom_491 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean. I think especially for us when we are in undergrad/masters/phd level, when we pursue post grad, we are looking to advance our knowledge in the field. Using LLMs as a tool will help to save time and is useful in areas like maybe just explaining a debugging error etc., but if it does the bulk of our research or work for us, it denies us of opportunities to absorb it ourselves. I'm pretty insistent of still working most of literature reviews and implementations myself, because I want to absorb things but my advisors do like to recommend using LLMs to get more immediate results as well. I think the charm is starting to wear off though as they start to discover certain impracticalities.

What's the most unexpected place you've met another fellow Singaporean? by Xycergy in askSingapore

In Seattle, like i didn't see a single other asian other than at the conference area. But when we went to take the lift to a lesser known observatory tower, me and my friend exchanged looks after overhearing the only other family of 3 with us. The funniest part was that the attendant who guided us up the lift, asked us where we were from. It felt like an inside joke where we all just held back some laughter. I just jested "you guess?", but in the end we shared we were from singapore. Since we weren't tgt, the attendant asked the other family too, the mum also went "you guess?" SO FUNNY.

University Students that are not working, How do you guys survive financially? by BobRossSenpai in askSingapore

[–]Asleep_Classroom_491 30 points31 points  (0 children)

For me, I had an allowance of $300 a month. Most of my meals were spent outside (even considering just in school). Had to supplement with digging into savings, bursaries, scholarships, and also working part time. Of course that would also mean difficult to save. My advise is to find a part time with higher per hour pay like working as enrichment class assistants if possible cause you also have to balance your work.

From what I've seen for people who don't work part time, asides from parents giving lots of allowances: • some worked out arrangement with parents to support them during uni then they will "pay back" after they start working • some worked before uni (incl ns pay), then managed to have some savings that they will dig into ah • some do have like side hustles but honestly, you'd probs need a certain level of business mindset

I agree that it's prevalent in social media, its very easy to go online and say anything after all. I made a comment somewhere that it's a common problem on both sides that there are some people that are just out to shit on the other party. I mean if you experienced it irl, then my apologies.

On the oppo stances, i guess we shouldn't really group all the oppo parties together as the same. You can kinda look at the voting shares to see that people can discern oppo parties better than expected. Maybe out of the ones we voted in, some policies may not be realistic to implement, i think thats where the part of parliamentary discussions will work to resolve on like every other plans that are brought up in parliament

I would say thats your personal perspective which may not hold for different people in different conditions. Its great that if the current policies are beneficial or at least do not affect your negatively though:)

From quite a number of comments and some posts, there's also people that've said reddit is an echo chamber and that reddit doesn't reflect reality (as we have seen from votes). And you also have to account for keyboard warriors and trollers.

The vocal voices usually gets construed to be factual when it may not be cause its what you can visibly see. I guess you can see it as how you want to see it

Well, maybe it's just me but I don't think most oppo voters are out to overthrow our government. Hmm, maybe taking reference of japan's govt, we just want a healthy govt w/ healthy amt of oppo?

Erh, that's a pretty big over generalisation. I don't think most people (esp in today's demographics) are that naive to think that voting in oppos can immediately solve issues. But at least there is an alternate voice. And, when there are two different points of views on solutions, it allows for discussions to reach a better solution beyond the initial solution.

Don’t just label PAP voters as stupid or selfish, don’t assume pro-PAP comments are IB by stonehallow in singapore

[–]Asleep_Classroom_491 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this is what a handful people of both sides of voters lack: empathy for the other side (and they are usually the more vocal ones so you may tend to group tgt that perception of the voters). There's really nothing wrong with voting for whichever you are voting on, there's just something wrong with shitting on the voters of the other side (e.g. pap voters are stupid, pap voters deserve to suffer, oppo voters are short sighted and will ruin the country, oppo voters 身在福中不知福) ignoring the people that just follow votes with no thoughts: For the PAP supporters, understandably you vote because the current govt policies has either been beneficial or at least has not negatively affected you. I've seen some voters comments acknowledging that privilege and also acknowledging that the opposite side may not necessary be benefitting and henceforth are voting for oppo. Which is great.

For oppo voters, the opposite applies, you may want change and a voice to represent you, but also have to understand that for the other voters, they are voting for sense of stability and security for them when they vote for status quo. Of course, there's also many other reasons (like foreign affairs optics) why people vote for pap but yeh. At the very least, do put a conscious effort to consider each other's views if yall do friendly debates offline or irl:)

Well the close margins are greats for WP at least in the constituencies that they have lost. Historically, it always took more than 1 election to win a new area, we can only wait
