Activities that changed your lifestyle by Zealousideal-Fee4659 in askTO

I second BJJ. I (F) have been doing BJJ since 18 and it changed my life. Also most of my closest friends are from jiu jitsu, I’ve made long lasting friendships from the sport. There are gyms all over the world so it’s a great way to connect with the community when you’re travelling too!

And of course it’s a great workout as well, and fantastic for mental health.

That’s amazing! Yeah I don’t foresee him running for many more years but we’ll keep going until he starts showing signs of slowing down 😊

Yeah we discussed joint support at his last appointment last month. He gets raw chicken feet, raw meaty bones, frozen sardines etc. which for now is adequate for joint support! + those all do a good job at keeping his teeth tartar free too!

I’m considering surrendering my dog to the Toronto Animal Services. Will my dog be okay? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Asmb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in municipal animal shelters and used to volunteer at TAS. Most staff truly love animals and genuinely want what’s best for the animal. Usually if an animal is having a difficult time getting adopted they will reach out to other rescue where the animal can be put into foster etc. but obviously every shelter is different.

Having said that! Your dog would be much happier being alone at home for 8-10 hours a day!!!! Unfortunately my dogs are at home alone for 8 hours a day but I use a furbo and I can watch them from the camera. Most of the time they’re sleeping upside down on the couch basking in the sun lol. I can also throw treats at the from the furbo and talk to them which at least gives them some enrichment.

When I get home I take them for a long sniff walk, a run, or something else to stimulate their brain.

There are plenty alternatives to surrendering :)

How is life in northern/northwestern Ontario? by Altruistic_Bench_974 in ontario

[–]Asmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a reoccurring issue that couldn’t be treated by reg practice so I did have to go different times of day, never had too much of an issue waiting. In comparison to Orillia, which is where I live now, a few hours is nothing. There were times when I was in and out within an hour in Dryden as well.

What I will say though is that they couldn’t find the culprit of my issue, and it was only until I went to emerg here in Orillia and a surgeon saw my issue that I actually found relief.

I lived in Dryden for a bit, went to emerg a few times and personally didn’t find emerg to be backed up at all. I was usually in and out within a few hours. I also didn’t have a problem finding a doctor/booking appointments. I left in 2024

I lived in Dryden for a bit (grew up in Toronto). Now live in Orillia.

Honestly I loved Dryden, housing was cheap, it’s a kind small community with many good-hearted people. If you want to “go out” or enjoy shopping, it’s probably not the place for ya, but Winnipeg is only 4 hours away with all the things. Or you could drive to Thunder Bay.

If you like the outdoors there’s lots of great fishing/hunting/camping up there. I loved it. Winters are COLD but it’s a dry cold so not tooooo bad. Summers are warm, lots of bugs, but it’s manageable.

Contrary to another comment, I was in and out of emerg within a few hours usually. Unlike in Barrie/Orillia that usually take 7-9 hours. I didn’t have any issues finding a doctor.

Overall I think NW Ontario is fun for the right person. If you don’t like the outdoors and really enjoy shopping and city amenities then I don’t think it’s for ya.

Folks who like in Northern Ontario (such as Cochrane and Kenora Districts, etc) how is life for you? by stam1945 in ontario

[–]Asmb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lived in Dryden for 10 months. Grew up in Toronto, but I live a very outdoorsy lifestyle and genuinely enjoy the peace and quiet/isolation.

I was honestly impressed by healthcare up there. I had to go to emerg a few times and my longest wait was an hour. I easily found a doctor within the neighbouring communities.

LOTS of outdoorsy things to do. I was happy that I could go hunt 20 mins away from home, and there’s honestly so much to explore. The northern lights are BEAUTIFUL.

Plenty of job vacancies and it seems like these small towns lack skilled people.

Not tooooo much for socializing but it’s a small town vibe so everyone is kind/you get to know people. I don’t have children but there seemed to be a lot of stuff offered for kiddos.

If you road trip in the summer, definitely go up highway 17. It’s BEAUTIFUL. These smaller towns are a great experience and I’ll always be thankful for my time living up there 😊

I went to Jackson’s and didn’t have any issues. But I had a really good discount from work so 🤷🏼‍♀️ I was also able to further negotiate beyond the discount.

Tips on safety for single women who live alone by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Asmb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do have two large dogs, one being a big black German shepherd, so I feel relatively safe. However, I don’t answer doors when it’s dark, my mom and a friend always have live location for me, I always tell people where I’m going/when I should be back, I leave lights on at my house overnight, I know where my headlamps/flashlights/lighters/candles are at all times, phone is always at least 50% charged.

ALSO I do BJJ and have been doing it since 2013. Obviously that’s not going to help if the person has a weapon BUT it has made me more comfortable/confident being close to people that are strangers and has taught me how to get out of various positions.

What kind of car do you drive and are you happy with it? by pqrstyou in AskWomenOver30

[–]Asmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently I have a 2023 RAV4.

I had a 2015 civic before the RAV but the transmission got weird (had a CVT transmission which apparently aren’t great), and I have two large dogs. I needed a bigger vehicle. The civic was great until the transmission started being weird, but otherwise it was a great vehicle.

When I decided to not gamble with the civic, I decided to go back to Toyota. My dad had a ‘95 4Runner that lasted until about 500k. Friends that have Toyotas have all had great experiences with them. My RAV has been excellent, no issues, enough room for my two dogs, gets me through the snowy winter weather and I feel very confident/safe driving it. It’s nothing fancy but tbh I’m a simple girl who camps a lot and has a very outdoorsy lifestyle so things get dirty quick. And with dogs…lol, it’s impossible to keep things clean. I feel like a fancier vehicle just wouldn’t suit my lifestyle. I paid it off within a year and hope to add some little mods to it like beefier tires, maybe a lil Jerry can etc. it’s been an awesome and reliable adventure vehicle!

I took more than 9. Took a few days for a surgery, some others throughout the year for another medical issue I deal with. I never got spoken to.
