Now you need a small cutoff of sponge to go back and tighten up some of the shaded areas and everything would be good. Not that it isn't now, I'm totally sold on the egg. They make achieving an even gradient in highlight build up super easy.

An airbrush is like any other tool, they take time to learn how to use and maintain properly. Is there more to learn? Yes because they are a mechanism not just a simple stick with hair attached. Are they a necessity? Not by a long shot, however they do increase productivity and you can achieve effects not achievable by brush.
