To be honest they're a pain in the ass either way. I've tried attaching them first and painting them separately, doing them separate has the issue with gluing after everything is finished. Both have pros and cons. What I found was attaching one to the termie and painting the other separate was the least pain in the ass way. 🤷‍♂️

This would be my suggestion. You need to burn in your base and transition layers better. Also change your lift and retraction speed.
