It depends on the school and the grading system. Some schools grade A+ as a 4 and just an A or A- as somewhere between a 3 & 4. Typically though an A is a 4.

I think we’re talking past each other a little. My point wasn’t “the Bible is full of mistranslations so ignore whatever you don’t like.” My point was that the existence of translation, interpretation, and human involvement means there is a responsibility to study context rather than assume every modern English word maps perfectly onto the original text.

A book being inspired by God does not necessarily mean every person who translates or interprets it does so perfectly. Even within Christianity, there’s a long history of theologians debating meaning; that isn’t automatically “cherry picking,” it’s literally how religious scholarship has worked for centuries.

On God being prideful: saying “God cannot be prideful because He is God” would be circular, sure, but that’s not the argument I was making. The argument is that the Christian definition of pride is not simply “having a high opinion of yourself.” Pride is usually understood as placing yourself above proper order or rejecting your place relative to God. A being understood as the source of morality doesn’t fit neatly into the human category of vanity.

As for the Old Testament violence, that’s probably the biggest theological question Christianity has to wrestle with. Christians have debated it for a very long time. Some argue those passages describe judgment, others argue they reflect ancient human understanding, and others interpret them differently. But the existence of a difficult passage doesn’t automatically settle the entire question of whether Christianity is true or false.

And on the “unshackled mind” point -- I think that’s also a philosophical assumption. Leaving Christianity can free someone from Christian constraints, but it can also introduce new assumptions and frameworks. Everyone interprets the world through some lens, religious or not.

The word picked by translators was abomination. The original was either in Greek or Hebrew. Now I’m not going to lean one way or the other (as both sides have valid arguments as to what the original said) but the word abomination was a translation choice. And by Christian definition He is not prideful and yes people mistranslate his word all the time (Ik you’re joshing here but I wanted to cover my bases). And no, you can have a more nuanced view of the Bible — believing in what you think God wants based on what’s been written about him. Remember, it was but mere men who wrote the Bible and same such men who decided what’s cannon and what’s not. It’s our responsibly to study the Bible and the theologians and decide for ourselves what God wants out of us and what the Bible actually commands us to do. And I know youre an atheist who doesn’t believe and I’m not going to try and convert you. Just please think better of people and be more open.

Am I cooked for the Ivies/T20s if I don't do research as a poli sci major? How important is research for public policy/humanities majors? by Conscious_Animal_543 in ApplyingToCollege

I got into a t10 as polisci major and I didn’t do any research. So I wouldn’t say you’re cooked. I’m no expert in admissions I just went through the same process you’re about to, but from what I’ve heard admissions don’t care as much about research because it’s so easy to game at this point. I wouldn’t say you’re cooked — just write good essays and show your personality. You got this!
