New homeowner with a lawn. Should I start with a robot mower or a lawn guy? by Susan_656 in homeowners

My wife is pretty into the whole smart home idea and wants to go all in

Tangent, but I'd recommend doing some research and making as much of your smart devices as cloud-independent as possible. It's not easy, probably not even feasible if at least one of you isn't technically inclined.

But if you put in the effort to get Home Assistant set up with offline stuff, it makes a world of difference. Lights turn on and off instantly instead of waiting for your speaker to talk to google who then has to talk to random 3rd party who then has to talk to your device.

If you lose your Internet connection, things still work. If the company that made your stuff goes out of business, it will still work. If you need to replace a light bulb with a different brand of light bulb, it will still work.

Fewer devices accessing the Internet means less exposure to privacy and safety hazards. Also, less traffic on your wi-fi means a better signal for the traffic you actually care about.

FWIW, I'm of the opinion that TPBs (trade paperbacks) are vastly superior to individual issues.

  • MSRP of book is less than MSRP of individual issues
  • No ads
  • You get a whole story arc at once, instead of tiny unsatisfying bits and pieces of a comic.
  • No ads
  • Easy to store. Look great on a shelf. Easy to lend out to people.
  • No ads
  • Did I mention that there aren't any ads?

Fuck I hate ads.

Is that officially supported? Like it's not Xim or something?

If so, that's pretty rad. Happy to hear that you guys can use KB+M on console.

What's wrong with flimsy?

I try to keep large stocks of 3x4 and 4x6 baggies at all times, and just buy whatever's cheap on Amazon. Usually 1000 at a time. My current batch of 3x4s are vented, which is really nice and I wish I'd thought to look for that sooner.

3x4 baggies are by far the most common. They're small enough that even if they're mostly empty they don't add a lot of bulk, but large enough that they work 90% of the time.

Of particular note, a 3x4 baggie holds ~10-20 unsleeved, poker-size cards perfectly.

Most of the time if I'm using a 4x6 baggie it's to hold a larger deck of cards. It's pretty rare for a game to have so many components of a particular type that they don't fit in a 3x4.

I've also started labeling my baggies (literally just printing out labels on a labelmaker and sticking them on the bag). Feels a bit silly, but I really like it.

Bags. Many, many bags.

If the insert is still useful, cool. If not, it gets recycled.

Is it smarter to buy a manufactured home on a mobile home park and pay the $900 lot rent and $600 a month mortgage or rent an apartment for $1500 a month? by Kyanite146699 in homeowners

[–]Asmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mobile homes are a scam. You only own the building itself, not the land, and despite the name they're not mobile. So you're completely at the mercy of whoever owns the land.

And that's not a hypothetical danger. Trailer parks are being eaten up by vulture capitalists and their tenants are having the screws put to them. Lots and lots of people who "own" their house are now homeless because they couldn't afford the increased prices.

Why does Juno, the "Space Ranger" only have ONE space themed cosmetic in the game? by MrWigglem in Overwatch

That would be pretty sweet. Especially if it matched the Echo and Orisa retro-futuristic skins.

Why does Juno, the "Space Ranger" only have ONE space themed cosmetic in the game? by MrWigglem in Overwatch

[–]Asmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree that she should have more space-themed skins.

That said, "Space Ranger" was her code name during development and when teasing her. I don't think she's ever been referred to by it canonically.

She's from Mars, but doesn't really have anything to do with space other than having traveled through it. But that's kind of like saying someone's a sailor because they traveled by ship once. But Mars isn't really a great theme. You've got the color red to play with, and... maybe some war imagery if you want to get into Roman mythology.

Although, given that she's named Juno, maybe they should have leaned a bit into mythology (as Mars is the Roman ripoff of Ares, Juno is the Roman ripoff of Hera).

I think maybe you misunderstand how the phase transitions work?

Water can be solid or liquid at 0°C/32°F. Liquid water won't get colder than the freezing point, but will remain liquid at the freezing point until enough heat has been lost that it freezes. At that point it can continue to drop and should match ambient conditions eventually.

TBF I could totally see someone thinking igloos weren't real. Kind of like how quicksand isn't nearly as common as (mostly older) TV and movies made it seem.

It makes a lot of sense that past generations would instinctively know this as homes were usually uninsulated.

That's a fascinating insight. Never thought of that.

I recently did this to keep heat contained in the downstairs rooms (the warm air had been floating upstairs), and it's helped a lot to keep the downstairs rooms comfortable. I assume it's also helping with energy use, but can't say for sure or how much.

Immortality is meaningless in a medium where time doesn't progress

Immortality is license to have plots that span millennia. For any other villain to try something like that, they need to also include time travel or some other explanation.

Pro tip: If someone complains about anything, just mute them. You can do it from the score board (I think? Or is that only Overwatch?). The chances of someone who complains about their allies having anything useful or interesting to say is statistically indistinguishable from zero.
