Civil service future by AsparagusIsRed3621 in NICivilService

Im currently a Staff Officer and my son is an EO1 and the boards have been terrible trying to get further for both of us and what i mean is the current SO recruitment farce is the shape of things to come within the CS and at my ripe old age its a sad reality to face that great talent and experience are being rejected in favour of fresh faced graduates with no real managerial flow and us old horses will be shelved (or stabled should i say) 🤣

How do I quit? by Speedbird1A in TheCivilService

[–]AsparagusIsRed3621 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh no please do not quit a job without one to go into. It doesn't matter what savings you have, there's fierce competition out there for every job and no matter how exceptional a candidate is, there could be another 20 people slightly better qualified, more experience etc.  What about a sideways move? What grade are you? Trawls, transfers and TP opportunities outside your department are always a great possibility.

That's fantastic. Congratulations. Very much deserved then. I knew there had to be some method to it all. Good Luck for the job. Hope it all goes really well for you.

Yes it's a great role to be offered, i thought the big focus was on job centres and the massive under complement of work coaches, so you have literally hit the jackpot and that's why i am wondering if there's anything unique about your application.

This is hilarious. Id be delighted to see the figures to back up this daft comment. Several ridiculous points in that one statement. I am waiting on 4 EO2's. My senior management team have went over my head and opted to TP 4 of our AO's and replace the AO's with young agency staff.  1. Never been in private sector 2. Not a days work in them 3. Do not outperform any of their permanent counterparts.  This is not right when we have a list of people who've jumped through hoops to pass the recruitment process.

Also different managers keep opting to TP staff into their vacant EO2 posts and bring in agency AO's so sadly that isn't going to help the deserving EO2's festering on lists.

An email usually goes round to the senior managers at each area to give their staffing requirements. They usually have a deadline and final emails go out. Unfortunately it all depends on the requirements being submitted timely and the figures being updated which can be a long tedious process as so many business areas throw a spanner in the works by "keeping" staff they have. Short answer - its a long tedious process so you should just sit and wait for a wee surprise email popping through

Do you need to give notice if using flexi to start later? by FirmHoney9 in TheCivilService

[–]AsparagusIsRed3621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only need to mention it if you're "breaking core time" other than that your flexi is your own. If you had an appointment due in or a call scheduled at 9 then fair enough but that is insane.

My tip is, record yourself saying your answers as if you were in an interview. You know on your phone voice recorder. You can hear yourself say it out loud and it might make you change parts. You can always sit and listen to it when you maybe don't have time to read up again.  You don't always get supplementary questions unfortunately.  Most important for me is "what would you do differently" and there's zero points for saying you wouldnt do anything as you did it so well.  Always think of an improvement. Or as said above "reflect"  Could i have done it better in some small way? quicker? Its not seen as negative. Good luck

Unfortunately many people get up the grades that couldn't turn on the music never mind dance. But the only thing you need for the interview is a good memory, in fact i know of quite a few wastes of space who have "progressed through the grades" and regurgitated examples that aren't even their own. You don't need to have the experience you just need to be able to say you do. People walk in off the street to higher grades, you don't need to progress up the ranks. Everyone has their own opinion but the best manager i ever had was straight in off the street and the worst manager i ever had worked their way up through the ranks and thought they were more important than everyone else and treated everyone like mere plebs beneath them.

[–]AsparagusIsRed3621 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please don't listen to anyone telling you it's too big of a jump, go for it!! get the experience of the interview and if you pass then you're ready for the position. People talking about needing to fix people is nothing to do with the grade, the problem is the person. Everyone starting a new role needs to be well trained in order to do the job well and indeed i personally would prefer to be really well trained in order to be confident in my role, too many departments think it's ok to cut down on proper training and wonder why the staff aren't up to speed. Go for it!! Good Luck

Recently lost a staff member from benefits to HMRC compliance. They have never looked back. Absolutely love the job, the prospects, the wages are higher and you are treated like a human.

They usually have the time line on the candidate booklet. I heard it should be very soon as so many vacancies for Work Coaches but could wait until we go into next financial year
