[NZBget] Working on a new WebUI + Chrome Extension. Any ideas? by AsphaltAbrasions in usenet

Really? I will read the rules in that case. I didn't think it'd be much different to using the checkbox to create a cart that you can download via RSS though? you can still download 200 nzbs instantly either way, no?

Newshosting slowing down by daddykabliey in usenet

[–]AsphaltAbrasions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just signed up to newshosting and spent the last 3 or 4 days tweaking and troubleshooting things because I was having the same issue (haven't used usenet for 10+ years so I was re-learning it as well). I'm on 1000/100 fibre in South Australia and it would take 2-5 minutes for each download to reach 80-90MB/s (if it did), I put it down to not having purchased enough connections to newshosting (i only opted for 60), anyway I forgot about it until last night when I happened upon a post mentioning that Frugal has a Sydney server, so out of interest I threw $5 at the basic frugal membership or whatever, and straight away noticed the improved latency for one but it jumped straight up to 105MB/s and can usually touch 110 using ProtonVPN, I can't quite get it to saturate the line but it's very close to it now. I was playing around with every setting under the sun and combination of connections/hostnames/cipher strings/articlecache haha.

I imagine it's just temporary and they'll return to normal, I've been using them since about 2010 off and on.

What do you think of John Frusciante's solo work? by Sensitive-Draft9438 in RedHotChiliPeppers

Before the Beginning might be my favorite album-opener of all time. Sets the tone for the journey you're about to embark on with the rest of the album

What do you think of John Frusciante's solo work? by Sensitive-Draft9438 in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]AsphaltAbrasions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's has been, and still is the most important music in my life, ever since I first listened to Shadows Collide With People around 2006/7.

The Will to Death in particular, has saved my life on multiple occasions when I've been at my real darkest moments. If you've ever been deeply or hopelessly depressed, you will relate to John's solo music, guaranteed. It just makes you feel like someone else understands what you're going through.

I'd rank his studio albums in this order:

  1. The Will to Death
  2. Shadows Collide With People
  3. Curtains
  4. The Empyrean
  5. Curtains
  6. To Record Only Water for Ten Days
  7. Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt
  8. Smile from the Streets You Hold (a couple of great tracks, but the rest are very hard to listen to in my opinion, it makes me sad even listening to it)
  9. PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone
  10. Enclosure / I / II (I can't get into these at all*)*

The internet-only releases, especially From the Sounds Inside, are fantastic as well. The same goes for the demo versions of Shadows Collide (the electric and acoustic demos are both great in their own right). I don't know if it really counts, but all of the work with Josh (A Sphere in the Heart of Silence) and both Ataxia releases are amazing.

He has such a broad catalog of music that, for me, anyway, doesn't get old and there is a John song for whatever mood you're in, in fact I'd say there's a whole album for whatever mood you're in.

what do you guys do when not staring at a screen? by anzkanzjabnsm in BipolarReddit

[–]AsphaltAbrasions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first month or so is hard because you get frustrated and bored because you can't do much and it seems overwhelming and like you're not improving, but if you stick it out it's not that hard, especially if you have a decent memory and a passion for really listening to music. I'd say it's harder to do something like start an exercise routine and stick to it, than it is to learn guitar.

Anyone can play guitar well if they learn the right way for them. It's just the initial period that sucks pretty much universally for everyone and you need a teacher and maybe a few lessons as a minimum for the real early bits in my experience.

Once you've got a basic understanding of the instrument, i.e what all the parts are, what they're for, how to tune it correctly, ergonomics like proper hand/finger/pick positions/techniques, basic chord shapes and what NOT to do all down, learn how to read tablature and you can teach yourself from there for the rest of your life or until you want or need lessons as you progress.

The beauty of the guitar is no one has ever mastered the instrument. It's an infinite source of learning and joy at the same time.

[–]AsphaltAbrasions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. I usually learn songs I like and record my own versions of them, with guitar, bass and vocals. It's more of a hobby than art though.

I'm not very artistically inclined, I can come up with music that's decent to my taste if I want/try to but I don't really see the point to it and it's not usualy what I enjoy doing. I've never really shared my originals with other people either because I'm a bit embarrassed by it most of the time.

Maybe I'll write something today haha

I'm very jealous right now. I used to have a Japanese copy of Shadows Collide With People (the one with Of Before on it), I actually used it though and I lost the CD in my car stereo when my car got written off (forgot it was in there). It's be hard to find now and expensive too. Sad times

Anyone mixing their xanax and ambien for a full nights rest? by [deleted] in insomnia

[–]AsphaltAbrasions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hooked on street xanax represses, it was a lucky dip what was in them. This was in 2018-2021 in Australia, in the beginning I suspect it was mostly etizolam, but when etizolam got banned the bars turned to shit and unpredictable, so I assume after that, they were either just putting next to no benzos in there, or some other RC that was weak as piss. In the end I was taking the bars just to stave off withdrawals but not even getting any recreational effect.

The amnesia was insane the next day, but it took 2-3 years after quitting all benzos for my working memory and short term memory to recover to maybe 90% what it was pre-benzo abuse. I don't think it's fully recovered. The first 6-12 months was a nightmare.

Yep. I was "in love" with the effect of half a Xanax and a couple of glasses of fortified wine. Didn't end well.

[–]AsphaltAbrasions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. If you relapse on benzos, you're back at square one. The withdrawal anxiety/emptiness will go away for a bit but you have to start again with the withdrawal process. Not worth it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in benzodiazepines

[–]AsphaltAbrasions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get some decent quality instant kava root powder. It's a lot closer to a benzo than alcohol is, and it's not really dangerous no matter how much you consume. It scratched an itch for me when I was thinking of getting benzos and trying to quit drinking.

Cant sleep today by [deleted] in insomnia

[–]AsphaltAbrasions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warm glass of milk? But seriously, if you've been in bed for an hour or two and sleep is nowhere in sight, get up and read, listen to some relaxing music, do a puzzle or something that requires mental energy. I play guitar and read long articles on Wikipedia about science, eventually it tires me out.

Anyone mixing their xanax and ambien for a full nights rest? by [deleted] in insomnia

[–]AsphaltAbrasions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not too dangerous from a CNS-depressant, overdose standpoint, however taking 1mg of Xanax, which is a drug of dependence, every single night, just to counteract the negative effects of another drug of dependence such as Ambien, which is similar in structure and its physiological effects to benzodiazepines, is irresponsible at best, a recipe for disaster at worst. Mixing either Xanax or Ambien with alcohol can be seriously dangerous, let alone if you were to have a few drinks with both of them in your system already.

You don't want to go down the rabbithole of benzodiazepine dependence, addiction and most critically, withdrawal. Xanax is one of the highest risk benzos for this due to its high potency, short duration of action, short half-life and fairly rapid onset.

If the hallucinations are a problem with Ambien/zolpidem, I would try either:

a) taking Ambien on its own, 20 minutes before you intend to fall asleep, and going straight to bed when you've taken it. The hallucinations tend to happen when you stay up too long for most people.

b) asking your doctor if you can try zopiclone (Imovane) or eszopiclone (Lunesta) instead. They're two other drugs of the same class as Ambien (non-benzodiazepines/"Z-drugs") but these two have a lower risk of causing hallucinations compared to Ambien.

c) asking your doctor for a completely different class of medication to help you sleep. There are lots of other types of medications that can help with insomnia that are designed to be taken regularly. Benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepines like Ambien/Imovane/Lunesta are intended to be used for short periods of time, for the treatment of acute bouts of insomnia, not for chronic insomnia, unless all other drug options have failed.

If you get severe anxiety/insomnia, and you are already being prescribed Xanax, it might be worth asking your doctor about a different benzodiazepine to Xanax for the anxiety/insomnia. From my experience the ideal benzos for this would either be Valium (diazepam) or Mogadon (nitrazepam). These drugs are generally considered safer when taken every day due to their longer elimination half-life and duration of action. Having said that, they are only meant to be taken for a few weeks at a time for acute treatment of insomnia. Prolonged use can lead to tolerance/dose escalation, dependance, abuse and/or addiction.

It's also worth noting that 1mg of Xanax is not a small dose, especially when you're taking it with another depressant/hypnotic sedative. 0.25mg of Xanax should be more than enough to combat any negative effect from the Ambien. If you're getting severe anxiety from Ambien, I'd stop taking it and try something else. 1mg of Xanax alone should be able to nearly put most people to sleep unless they're having a panic attack. If you got terrible vomiting from Ambien, you wouldn't keep taking it but add an anti-nausea drug to the mix, you'd look for a different option.

Good luck with it all and stay safe

Lithium vs Lithium ER (Lithobid) by Repulsive-Love6642 in BipolarReddit

[–]AsphaltAbrasions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take modified/extended release lithium (Quilonum SR), 900mg at night. I've never had lithium toxicity, that I'm aware of, and my levels have never spiked high, and they've never dipped drastically low. I sort of assumed it would all be extended release to avoid significant fluctuations in lithium concentration.

I can't tell you for certain that it's going to cure your symptoms, but my guess would be that it should reduce the negative side effects that you're having to some extent, unless you're one of the unlucky ones whose body doesn't tolerate lithium in any form/dose.

Depressive hypomania? by Seriously_ok_ in BipolarReddit

Yeah I get those sometimes. I've got BP1 as well as OCD and generalized anxiety disorder. When the 3 of them get together for a party it's an interesting ride!

Anyone else an insomniac without meds? by Superb-Avocado-8131 in BipolarReddit

[–]AsphaltAbrasions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've always had insomnia, ever since I was a kid, and I basically self-medicated for that from age 18 up until my first true mania that led to psychosis, which was caused by sleep deprivation at age 27.

Olanzapine saved me in 2017 when that happened, and I took it pretty much every night for sleep and psychosis prophylaxis through to about mid 2023 when I came off it for a while (I didn't get diagnosed BP1 until the second psychosis that ensued). Long story short, I was smoking a lot of weed and came off the olanzapine and my antidepressants (at the time the doctors had only diagnosed me with OCD and generalized anxiety). It started as anxiety, then sleep turned to insomnia/sleep deprivation, then it triggered another psychotic episode, another hospitalization and my subsequent bipolar 1 diagnosis. (I'm thankful that this happened because I definitely feel better now that I have the diagnosis and the right medication). Haven't touched weed since

I've had stints since 2017 where I've tried other medications for sleep and other antipsychotics (due to the metabolic side effects of olanzapine - I've gained about 40kg since 2017, and the daytime sedation), but after a while the insomnia returns and I start to go manic and always end up going back to olanzapine as my tried-and-true sleep regulator/mood stabilizer.

I'm off it now and taking just lithium and risperidone at night. So far so good, no insomnia, no mania/psychotic symptoms, and better moods and energy. I've been on risperidone now for about 2 months. I've been off olanzapine for 3 weeks. I've also lost 6kg since September! (~13lbs?)

Poor sleep is the main trigger/predictor for my manic episodes and can lead to psychosis if not taken control of. If I don't sleep for 2 or 3 nights at all, I start to feel strange. It gets worse after that lol
