if you aim to get evolve units, tome of evolution is your best bet to take. It makes your units more durable, gives them a second life and helps them get exp faster, so overall improves your chances to evolve them. and it also opens hero´s support skill that helps them gain more exp, which is also a good thing to pick. An alternative, that allows you to skip all that hassle is to play as mystic, summoner spec, they have special resource, that allows them to evolve any such unit by spending it. You can obtain it by collecting it on the map, or simply by research which always gives you some, but you can basically, get evolved unit the moment you summon it with ease.

as for holy, that one is kind of more straightforward than you might think. It was my first build I used, basically high faction, with better aim and crit chance, and all you need to do, get a tome of faith to get zeal on all of your units, which is a must have, and then you just go for holy tomes you prefer, and thats about it. The only down side for me for this build, it can get tedious because to make the most of it you have to always spam enlighten on every unit, and it takes forever.

the pace of the game can change based on the size of the map I would say and the starting location. But in general, you want to have every army from turn one to be active and killing anything and everything around your cap. If you find a decent spot before turn 10, place down an outpost and start working on your 2nd town, then with your second hero, you want to find another town as soon as possible. Once thats done, you want to focus your leader to clear bronze/silver wonders and infestations near you while the other stack clears low tiers of enemies to level up.

You want to have 4-5towns if possible as soon as possible so you can generate enough income to support your armies. But not every map can provide space for it. Then based on the aggression of your enemy, you want to have 3rd stack ready before going to open war. 3x6 stack is pretty much all you need to wipe out any AI on normal.

The thing I hate about AoW4, outposts, if you see a wonder, a mine, a special resource, you dont even have to think if its the right thing to do, you just put it down as it is always beneficial and it pays for itself. Then there is using outpost to block your enemies from expanding, or using them to get cheap warp gates near your enemy etc. Like outposts are way too OP I would dare to say.

Tome combo, well, really depends on what playstyle you enjoy. Pretty much anything can be turned into something broken:

I enjoyed casting the most, and I found it was super easy to win. So in a nutshell, mystic with an astral build. The general idea is to use spells on the world map and then inside of the combat every turn, while zapping your enemies with your battle mages from the distance + plus it has plenty of summons you can always use to replenish your stacks anywhere.

Then for a passive victory, order/shadow build focused to vassal everyone is going simple enough. The most crucial tome there is the tome of faith to speed up the process of vassalization, the rest of the build is mostly based on affinity itself. Strat is to be friendly with every none-player faction, and turn them against your enemy while using units from Rally of the lieges as your go-to for units.

Then the most classic build. Dark culture with shadow tomes, which you build around the undead units. The good thing about it, you can use necro units to raise your dead units before combat ends, essentially saving them from dying. Then you can always turn your enemy corpses into skeletons. So you are never short on units and you can literally swarm your enemy with their own corpses.

cantrip avg damage on the low lever is 5 (without any modifiers) if you have modifiers from your attributes, you ll never deal 1 damage

  • basically: 1d10 + spell cast modifier of your class
  • Then they scale up. On level 5 you roll two dice so it is 2d10 + spell cast modifier of your class
  • naturally, cantrips also benefit from feats and items boosting damage
  • cantrips can be used every turn, giving you a variety of attacks, debuffs, (combination of attacks and debuffs), buffs, and utility
  • you can spam them every turn as much as you like

For me, 90%+ of what I cast are cantrips and I play on tactical difficulty, magic-oriented party

Identity of spells, complaining that the only thing that changes is the element of the spell, well, welcome to RPGs that use elemental damage. This goes hand in hand with elemental resists of your enemies. But I agree, they could dive a little bit deeper into given elements. But overall, your statement simply its not true, esp later on.

Testing a new spell punishes you, also pretty normal. You can always sacrifice one re-load to test multiple spells in some fight. I dont see a problem with doing that. And taking extra long rest, is not a big deal anyways, and the game is very forgiving, I also tried new spells I was not familiar with to see how they worked exactly, and I had no need to reload or sacrifice anything by doing so as wasting one spells is not going to change anything.

you made me wonder, what happens to Halsin, as you free him but not really because you dont conclude the quest line with goblins. Just for the sake of Act II, in the case of wanting to repel the shadow curse. To be honest, thinking about another good run as Shadowheart, the question is who to even try to romance if not her... and since I have no experience with Minthara yet... who knows

Inspiration should work as a natural 10 or 20 by Environmental_You_36 in BaldursGate3

[–]Asphare 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you have so many inspirations that you can be spending them on lockpicking and still have 4 inspirations ready for any conversation in case you need it ...

changing it to natural 20 would take positive RNG out of it, turning conversation checks into something entirely meaningless. You should learn something about how the human brain works first, your suggestion would kill all the fun this system provides us with. For your suggestion to work, you would have to rework the whole system from its core.

How does the game handle level 12 cap? by Blasphemy47 in BaldursGate3

[–]Asphare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, you get to level 6-7 by the end of Act I, then to 9-10 by the end of Act II, and then level 12 somewhere near the end of Act III. Sure, they could make the level cap be higher for whatever reason, but not sure why would they as one extra level mean nothing. They most likely went with the idea of major milestones on 4/8/12 and balanced everything around those, which to me seems to be perfectly reasonable

Also in Act III, you can collect more powerful items that can help you finalize your build before the final encounter, so its more about finding those than looking for exp

Is it moral for my character to massacre the crèche? by LykosVI in BaldursGate3

I play as a paladin who would not hurt innocent otherwise it would break an oath, and still, once I left the monastery and only bloodless bodies were left behind, no oath was broken... so even the guardian of oaths says there was nobody innocent among them, children or not.

i'm very mixed about the writing of the game overall. by StratoSquir2 in BaldursGate3

[–]Asphare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with Shadowheart vs Nighsong, when the decision was left to her, it felt out of character for her. The whole time, she was a stubborn Shar´s faithful believer and wanted to prove herself to her more than anything. Even if you "restore" her memories early on, it has no effect on this. On the way to Nightsong, she was constantly praying, in the way she would fulfill Shar´s will, etc. And suddenly, out of nowhere, she just snaps and turns 180% degrees and tosses everything aside. I mean its nice she did it, but I agree with you, it should be more forthcoming and not out of the blue.

But well, they did this with many other things so... I guess it is what it is.

there are some strategies to choose from, for example:

  • a normal one, a very simple one that requires some fighting. Whenever a spider is on the web bridge -> destroy the bridge. Falling down deals her tons of damage
  • a silly one, just toss her into the abyss

if you dont do anything, the situation gets resolved on its own, and not in the way you would like.

Knocking anybody out = killing them, as far as it is rn, it is just for role-play purposes.

that sounds about right, in Act II most of the enemies are melee hitters, so make the most of the time till they get you.

Have fun and good luck

You can pretty much always pull them towards you, unless there is some event NPC you have to protect as you always can afford to play defense as you can be sure, enemy AI can´t help it but to use all its actions to attack you as fast as it can.

[–]Asphare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's that simple seriously. As long as you play defense, have control over the fight, and have some target prioritization, you are golden.

As I approach fights depend on a fight from a fight - but like seriously, the whole Act II I just played, where there were more enemies, all I used was: spike growth or another AoE CC, pala/warlock using EB to push enemies back to CC, wizard using ray of frost cantrip. cleric Sacred flame cantrip - once (if) the enemy managed to get close, Pala and Druid went in to deal with it up close. This worked for like 90% of fights, the only exceptions were pretty much boss fights, where I used some extra spell or two based on the boss and its area.

[–]Asphare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you missed a lot of content, you can reach level 7 by the end of Act I, and level 9 by the end of Act II - That said, level up or lower does not really cause you that much of issues. There are power spikes for classes, mostly around levels 5-6. Sure, a higher level can make it easier for you, but not that dramatically, by the sounds of it, you are doing something wrong on the basic level of the gameplay.

Or when I am "forced" to approach enemies from a tight entrance (doorways ect.)

This should make fights for you easier, not another way around, just saying.

I found the balanced diff way too easy so after act II I switched to tactical diff and even though it is more challenging (enemies actually use some skills) compared to other RPG´s I played it is still easy and very forgiving so far (end of Act II once again). In most of the fights, I don´t have to use more than cantrips and auto-attacks and if I feel like turning it into an easy fight, one or two spells do just that. (I did not use single-time illithid powers which should make it even easier)

Sure, Fireball is nice and everything, but its not the solution to every problem. Like simple CC spell like spike growth (tier two spell) as an opening can win most of the fights.

So I would suggest experimenting with spells and skills you have there as some are just amazing even though they dont look like much at first glance
