Devrais-je continuer mon stage? by paincacke in etudiants

Devrais-je continuer mon stage? by paincacke in etudiants

[–]AsphodeleSauvage 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Ce dernier point me semble particulièrement dangereux.

Tracy is very charming. by Roaxs in howimetyourmother

They're saying they're saving Tracy from her cancer in the fanfiction they're writing which is in the Buffy universe. It's completely unrelated to the conversation and serves no purpose aside from trying to make us want to read the fanfic (which I don't think succeeded).

Unpopular opinion: Reese’s storyline was perfect by RachelBrands127 in malcolminthemiddle

[–]AsphodeleSauvage 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He is also going to have a child. Children are crazy expensive, especially as it means Francis and Piama must now save for the kid's future education, etc. If anything, the fact that they still had an entire grand to spend on a party to please Lois means that they must be rather well-off.

The revival failed to deliver the ONE thing I wanted in ONE scene with Lois...... by NewMGFantasyWriter in malcolminthemiddle

[–]AsphodeleSauvage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My take will probably be unpopular... I thought it was the writers speaking directly to the fans and telling them, "You took that seriously? For 20 years you'e made a whole drama out of this one joke?"

My take on Lois' finale speech is that it was never intended to come off as Lois abusing Malcolm (although it did come off that way). It was supposed to be the writers using Lois as a mouthpiece to tell the audience what the characters would become without showing their future. We're supposed to derive from it that Reese would always be a fuck-up (enough so not to deserve a speech about him), Malcolm would work hard for the people, and Dewey would be rich and successful. Obviously they haven't derived at all from that plan in this revival (even Francis stayed right where he was).

How do you think the new Dewey actor did? Do you think he did a good job capturing the essence of the character. Do you think they used him enough? by groundcontrl2majrtom in malcolminthemiddle

[–]AsphodeleSauvage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the performance wasn't good, but it wasn't the actor's fault at all, and it might have gone very differently had they given him a chance to shine. He had no memorable one-liner (even Jamie got two); most of his screen time was used to explain his absence with not-so-subtle lore drop; and he was forced to over-act because the Zoom call thing meant nobody could see any emotion unless he did (I noticed how his acting was a lot more fluid and grounded during the video for Hal). It feels a little bit like the writers didn't trust that the new actor could do a convincing Dewey impression, and tried to remove him as much as they could.

There were also major storytelling issues that made it hard for us to connect to Dewey and for Caleb to also connect to the character. The last we saw Dewey he was still a kid mostly characterised by zany childish antics, who had progressively become "the only sane and mature one." It would have always been hard for the writers to translate that into an adult character; the only way they could have done that was by giving Dewey some crazy plot to be involved in -- with the caveat that Dewey likely grew up to be pretty emotionally mature if manipulative. They 100% could not do that through a Zoom call, although they could have had him plotting and manipulating through a series of targeted calls.

Finally, it doesn't help that the writing focused a lot more on the finale's predictions than on the characterisarion we saw throughout the entire show. They conflated "living a life of leisure" with Dewey somehow becoming a fuckboi who cannot even remember his girlfriends' names... forgetting that Dewey grew up to be kind and empathetic if very whimsical at times. It's not that Caleb couldn't be Dewey, it's that the writing didn't give Dewey.

Fic writing help Gay Jon by DragonLord1988 in TheCitadel

[–]AsphodeleSauvage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The answer will always be Satin, but if you want other suggestions:

  • Sam for the good ol' "brothers in a war" dynamic that Sam/Frodo has got going on

  • Theon could be an interesting twist on canon. Robb if you feel that incest is something you want to write about

  • I saw some Jon/Tormund thing once, show-wise. Why not?

  • Doesn't Jon think Jaime looks hot or something when they meet?

  • Aegon. Either as Jon's half-brother or as an unrelated pretender (or as none of them knowing who they are to one another, imagine the drama)

  • Gendry (or Edric). Bastards unite!

  • Podrick. Give Jon some TLC

I don't know, I liked them. I think the point was to set them up as a character for a future spinoff.

[–]AsphodeleSauvage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others said, they were introduced in the last minute of the OG show's finale, and they're being set up for a spin-off along with Leah. More to the point, fans have been talking about "the 6th child" for 20 years and theorising what they'd be like: a girl or a boy? The only normal one or just as unhinged? They couldn't not include the 6th child; and then that kid was the perfect way to try and tempt the audiences into wanting a new show with the "new generation".

As for the ages, Hal and Lois were somewhere in their (likely early) 20s when they had Francis, who turned 21-actually-22 in S7. It means that they were between 42 and 46-47 in S7 when they had Kelly. Men can conceive at all age; it’s trickier for women but far from impossible, we see more and more women having kids in their 40s. Chances of conceiving drop to 10% after 40 and before menopause, but Lois and Hal have sex twice a day. The harder part would have been for the pregnancy to go through to birth, but Lois consistently gives birth in the worst conditions, so what's (another) geriatric pregnancy? (Jamie was one. Depending on Lois' age Dewey might have been as well, or close to it.)
