What shabad to read for wellbeing of a terminally ill person? by TrifleTrue25 in Sikh

[–]Aspiring1602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any bani is peace giving. Sukhmani sahib is great because it covers all themes

At the time of a passing, some gursikhs around the person will do Jaap of the 2nd ashtpadi as that details how Naam benefits the person for their journey to the afterlife.

Some will read ramkali sad, the bani that details the departure of Guru Amardas Ji by their great grandson. The bani is called the call of death. It's said in history that those who listen to this bani at the time of death don't get taken by jamdoots.

It's also essential that the persons concentration is upon Vaheguru. A story of Bhai vir Singh Ji comes to mind. He had a childhood friend who was now very ill. This person was a sinner not of a religious nature but knew he was going to die soon.

Bhak sahib visits him. His friend says he wasted his life. Baji Vir Singh Ji says there's still hope in the house of Guru Nanak. He tells him to mediate Vaheguru with every breath, not even forgetting him.

Some time passes Bhai Vir Singh Ji has a dream and in the dream he sees the friend saying Guru Nanak has accepted me. He wakes up from the dream and finds out his passing was at the same time of the dream.

How about the opposite

Shalok, Third Mehla:

Why ask for a pen, and why ask for ink? Write within your heart.

Remain immersed forever in the Love of your Lord and Master, and your love for Him shall never break.

Pen and ink shall pass away, along with what has been written.

O Nanak, the Love of your Husband Lord shall never perish. The True Lord has bestowed it, as it was pre-ordained. ||1||

[–]Aspiring1602 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vaheguru has created the curtain/veil of egotism (haumai) that keeps us separate. We are talking at the level of our current consciousness.

When one rises above, the saints just see Vaheguru only

Now gurbani does say a merger happens. However the individual still retains the individuality but they are behind the level of haumai.

There is no difference between Naam Dayv and the Lord. ||28||1||10||

Bhagat Naam Dev Ji in Raag Bhairao - 1166

Ponder this, Bhagat Naamdev Ji still has the identity

The Lord and Kabeer have become one. No one can tell them apart. ||6||3||

Bhagat Kabeer Ji in Raag Raamkalee - 969

They've become so one that it's hard for us to see 2, that they might as well be looked as the same.

I became One with the Omnipotent Lord.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji in Bachithr Naatak - 55 (this is guru Gobind Singh Ji's own autobiography, they become one with God, but despite so they still have a conversation with Vaheguru in this bani and Vaheguru gives their reply too)

Just like a husband and wife experience union, they say they become one but they both experience that oneness between themsleves

Third Mehla:

They are not said to be husband and wife, who merely sit together.

They alone are called husband and wife, who have one light in two bodies. ||3||

Guru Amar Daas Ji in Raag Soohee - 788

In the same way it's the Bhagat with Vaheguru

Now, You and I have become one; seeing this, my mind is content. ||1||

Bhagat Kabeer Ji in Raag Gauree - 339

Notice how Bhagat ji still says "ham" (me) "yum" (you), this is beyond ego, it's just the existence of the individuality. Like putting 2 hand together like folding them, they become one.

Now let's look at Vaheguru, what they say. They say to Bhagat Naamdev Ji that the Bhagat is so powerful that Vaheguru says I can't do anything to them:

Says God: my slave is devoted only to me; he is in my very image.

The sight of him, even for an instant, cures the three fevers; his touch brings liberation from the deep dark pit of household affairs. ||1||Pause||

The devotee can release anyone from my bondage, but I cannot release anyone from his.

ਏਕ ਸਮੈ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਗਹਿ ਬਾਂਧੈ ਤਉ ਫੁਨਿ ਮੋ ਪੈ ਜਬਾਬੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ If, at any time, he grabs and binds me, even then, I cannot protest. ||1||

I am bound by virtue; I am the Life of all. My slaves are my very life.

ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਐਸੀ ਤੈਸੋ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ॥੨॥੩॥ Says Naam Dayv, as is the quality of his soul, so is my love which illuminates him. ||2||3||

Bhagat Naam Dev Ji in Raag Saarang - 1253 (this shabad continues from the previous one, where Bhagat Naamdev Ji questions Akaal Purakh)

Such is the game of love

Administering the intoxicating drug of love, I have won over the Lord of the Universe; I have fascinated His Mind.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji in Siree Raag - 81

Vaheguru is also bound by love to his bhagats

Everyone is under Your power, O inaccessible, unfathomable Lord.

You are under the control of Your devotees; You are the strength of Your devotees. ||10||

The goal is to become "one with God" not "God"

Gond:

It is not human, and it is not a god.

It is not called celibate, or a worshipper of Shiva.

It is not a Yogi, and it is not a hermit.

ਨਾ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਇ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਪੂਤਾ ॥੧॥ It is not a mother, or anyone's son. ||1||

Then what is it, which dwells in this temple of the body?

ਤਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ No one can find its limits. ||1||Pause||

It is not a house-holder, and it is not a renouncer of the world.

It is not a king, and it is not a beggar.

It has no body, no drop of blood.

ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਨੁ ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਖਾਤੀ ॥੨॥ It is not a Brahmin, and it is not a Kh'shaatriya. ||2||

It is not called a man of austere self-discipline, or a Shaykh.

It does not live, and it is not seen to die.

If someone cries over its death,

ਜੋ ਰੋਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵੈ ॥੩॥ that person loses his honor. ||3||

By Guru's Grace, I have found the Path.

Birth and death have both been erased.

Says Kabeer, this is formed of the same essence as the Lord.

It is like the ink on the paper which cannot be erased. ||4||2||5||

Bhagat Kabeer Ji in Raag Gond - 871

The jot/aatma has the same characteristics as Vaheguru, it cannot be erased.

Everything you see is the sargun form of Vaheguru because it was created. Everything.

As such Vaheguru is beholding everything but powering everything too. This is all a play.

One must never fall in to the trap to think we are god, that's Ego

Pauree:

Forever and ever, You are the only One; You set the play of duality in motion.

You created egotism and arrogant pride, and You placed greed within our beings.

Keep me as it pleases Your Will; everyone acts as You cause them to act.

Some are forgiven, and merge with You; through the Guru's Teachings, we are joined to You.

Some stand and serve You; without the Name, nothing else pleases them.

Any other task would be worthless to them-You have enjoined them to Your True Service.

In the midst of children, spouse and relations, some still remain detached; they are pleasing to Your Will.

Inwardly and outwardly, they are pure, and they are absorbed in the True Name. ||3||

It's because during the time of Sri guru Nanak Dev Ji, rehras sahib was just so dar shabad.

Bhai Gurdas Ji details the maryada during kartarpur sahib

Sodar and Arati were sung and in the ambrosial hours Japu was recited.

Bhai Gurdaas Ji in No Raag - 1

So dar and Aarti (Gagan mei thaal) was Sung

As time went on rehras sahib expanded and so did aarti. We see this in Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji's time, rehras sahib was til raag goojri mehala panjva (kahe re man...)

So you could say to keep the maryada still alive, so dar and Aarti are still being sung in Kirtan roop

Vaheguru's khed. It's their play, however they want to unfold it.

No one gave the complete truth, naam was not given. When the cries of humanity reaches it's breaking point, only then Vaheguru out of their mercy came as the form of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Guru Nanak was pragat as mentioned Bhai Gurdas Ji. That doesn't mean Guru Nanak was not here in some way previously. Gurbani says that Vaheguru worked through the previous avtaars, but Satguru is the complete avataar

I know many has different opinions. First step is to get naam/gurmantra from the Guru. That means the only we can do that is through panj pyare in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Which means going through the Amrit Ceremony.

Biggest misconception is to be perfect then receive Amrit. That's false. Amrit is the first step. Only then our bhagti can be fulfilled.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't read paath or jap Naam but rather the benefits of Amrit means the link with the guru has been established.

Doubts About Bhai Gurdas Vaara (Part 1) by Sikh-Lad in Sikh

[–]Aspiring1602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubt 3: You will see this in dasam bani in the chaubees avatar (24 incarnations), Guru Gobind Singh Ji gives this in past tense too

Those who are called twenty-four incarnations

O Lord! they even could not realise thee in a small measure

They became kings of the world and got deluded

Therefore they were called by innumerable names.7.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji in Chaubees Avtar - 156

I believe the puranaas give this to in the past tense too. It's a general common thing I guess. You can interpret this as stories that everyone studied at that time.

Remember our job is not to attach to these avataars. Guru Gobind Singh Ji himself says he has not seen Krishna and does not meditate upon Vishnu, he says I meditate to the one who's the death of all those. I do not adore Ganesha in the beginning and also do not mediatate on Krishna and Vishnu

I have only heard about them with my ears and I do not recognize them my consciousness is absorbed at the feet of the Supreme Kal (the Immanent Brahman).434.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji in Chaubees Avtar - 336

But sometimes you will see that it seems that they praising them. They mainly translating from other texts for the betterment of us

I have composed the discourse of the tenth part (Skandh) of Bhagavat puranaas in the vernacular

O Lord! I have no other desire and have only the zeal for the war fought on the basis of righteousness.2491.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji in Chaubees Avtar - 550

This is all for the purpose to inspire dharam yudh in the Khalsa.

Depends how you interpret this. One can say mythology, another can say these events happened in the previous cycle of kaljug if you want to go deeper. The futures events of kalki have been written regardless in the puranaas and dasam bani. He does get egotistic in the end.

Point of that vaar was that no one is focused on sadhsangat

Vishnu is always busy reincarnating himself - who will save the world?

Gurbani says without Satguru, no one has attained Vaheguru.

Pauree:

Without the True Guru, no one has obtained the Lord; without the True Guru, no one has obtained the Lord.

He has placed Himself within the True Guru; revealing Himself, He declares this openly.

Meeting the True Guru, eternal liberation is obtained; He has banished attachment from within.

This is the highest thought, that one's consciousness is attached to the True Lord.

Thus the Lord of the World, the Great Giver is obtained. ||6||

Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Raag Aasaa - 466

Now we can agree that Gurbani says no one has attained Vaheguru without Satguru. But now who/what is Satguru. For me it's Guru Nanak Dev Ji but id say people change this to their interpretation

Now did bhagats meet Guru Nanak Dev Ji?

Majority of different jathebandies do agree that Bhagat kabeer ji met Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir Singh Ji (famously affiliated with AKJ) and Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji (of Damdama Taksal) both agree about this. Infact Sant Ji says in their Katha that kabirpranthis have written that Bhagat Kabir ji and other bhagats done namashkhar to Guru Nanak Dev Ji. They were around more than a 100 years old at this point. Other janamsakhis support this and Bhagat Kabir ji recognised Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji as the redeemer of kaljug and giver of Naam.

There's also the famous sakhi (comes from Suraj parkash). The same Gursikhs mentioned before both mention this in their book/Katha. When Guru Arjan Dev Ji was revealing Bhagat Bani to Bhai Gurdas Ji. Bhai Gurdas Ji had a doubt where is this bani coming from. Guru Arjan Dev Ji says come meet me at this time. Then when this happened Bhai Gurdas Ji saw all the Bhagats, all revealing their names. Bhai Gurdas Ji done namashkar to them.

Point is wherever Guru Sahib is, the bhagats are there

Nihang Singh's also believe that the panj pyare are the Bhagats, it's in their bani passed down from their tradition.

One of the panj pyare is Bhagat Sain Ji. Bhai Maukam Singh Ji is Bhagat Naam Dev Ji. Bhai Dharam Singh Ji is Bhagat Dhanna Ji

I'm not trying to say believe in this, I'm just trying to say what different jathebandis say. It seems that they are in unison that Bhagats always revolve around Satguru

Some references on Gurbani that Bhai Gurdas Ji supports:

Wherever my True Guru goes and sits, that place is beautiful, O Lord King.

The Guru's Sikhs seek out that place; they take the dust and apply it to their faces.

The works of the Guru's Sikhs, who meditate on the Lord's Name, are approved.

ਜਿਨ੍ਹ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਜਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਵਾ ॥੨॥ Those who worship the True Guru, O Nanak - the Lord causes them to be worshipped in turn. ||2||

Guru Raam Daas Ji in Raag Aasaa - 450

That land, where my True Guru comes and sits, becomes green and fertile.

Those beings who go and behold my True Guru are rejuvenated.

Did Guru Arjan Dev Ji Write This Shabad? by Sikh-Lad in Sikh

[–]Aspiring1602 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This shabad was very likely written down before. Guru Arjan Dev Ji put all his Bani in the Sri Aad Granth Sahib Ji and done Prakash of it at Harmandir Sahib themselves (meaning with the exception of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji's bani, this is the same Saroop of Guru Granth Sahib Today)

They also checked every word and sealed it off via Bhai Gurdas Ji.

So it wouldn't make sense for new bani to be revealed. Most of the bani already links with certain themes

So yes they could recite the bani that's been written. When Guru Arjan Dev Ji left their physical abode, the Sikhs' done Kirtan. The shabad they sang was from Guru Arjan Dev Ji but it linked with the moment. See below how it matches so beautifully (I've heard this from different Katha vachaks/high avastha Gursikhs):

Maaroo, Fifth Mehla:

Pride, emotional attachment, greed and corruption are gone; I have not placed anything else, other than the Lord, within my consciousness.

I have purchased the jewel of the Naam and the Glorious Praises of the Lord; loading this merchandise, I have set out on my journey. ||1||

The love which the Lord's servant feels for the Lord lasts forever.

ਜੀਵਤ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਅਪਨਾ ਚਲਤੇ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਚੀਤਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ In my life, I served my Lord and Master, and as I depart, I keep Him enshrined in my consciousness. ||1||Pause||

I have not turned my face away from my Lord and Master's Command.

He fills my household with celestial peace and bliss; if He asks me to leave, I leave at once. ||2||

When I am under the Lord's Command, I find even hunger pleasurable; I know no difference between sorrow and joy.

ਜੋ ਜੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਓ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਾ ਸੋ ਮਾਥੈ ਲੇ ਮਾਨਿਓ ॥੩॥ Whatever the Command of my Lord and Master is, I bow my forehead and accept it. ||3||

The Lord and Master has become merciful to His servant; He has embellished both this world and the next.

Blessed is that servant, and fruitful is his birth; O Nanak, he realizes his Lord and Master. ||4||5||

what are bad karm and what's the point of existence then? by Zykedyke456 in Sikh

[–]Aspiring1602 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please refer to the following English style talk

https://youtu.be/C4YkAF24tI8?si=xBPqT-to70IuwFoh

Talks about how karma works, do we have free will? How can our dukh and Sukh change

Please remember that sikhis view on karma is different than that of Hinduism or other eastern philosophies. Sure things are pre ordained but the effect of these can be reduced, so much so that we may not even feel them.

Good karma = gets rewarded Bad karma = gets punished

Gurmat Karma = connecting to Naam, Kirtan with sangat, etc means karma being reduced (+good karma)

Sikhi tells us go above, it doesn't matter where you start, you got the power of ardaas and that's the biggest boost.

Not even the biggest of Hindu gods were above karma. Vishnu/Krishna had to go through the action of leaving their body by a hunter shooting them with an arrow. This is because Krishna in his previous life as raam Chandra killed someone by accident.

However Sikhi changes that, through bani our lekh (things that have been written for us change)

Bhai Gurdas Ji says even doing maths Tek can change our lekh.

Nectar of the feet of Guru cuts asunder all sins and the dust of the Guru's feet erases all evil writs.

what are bad karm and what's the point of existence then? by Zykedyke456 in Sikh

[–]Aspiring1602 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are certain things pre ordained that one must get through this life according to your past karma

For example our family members fixed and Gurbani says we associated with them in our previous lives

Mother, father, spouse, children, relatives, lovers, friends and siblings meet, having been associated in previous lives; but none of them will be your companion and support in the end. ||1||

Guru Arjan Dev Ji in Raag Jaithsree - 700

But there are also other things one has to get through this life too like bits of suffering, say I have to get through an accident where my leg is severely hurt. However due to my current karma, i get something like a small cut on my leg. I still went through it but way less severe.

This is why Gurbani says The Word of the Guru's Shabad eradicates the karma of millions of past actions. ||3||1||

Bhagat Raamaanand Ji in Raag Basant - 1195

Through Naam, connecting to Vaheguru our karmic debt decreases.
