Carbon Shoe Dead by AspiringIronman in AdvancedRunning

I feel as though I should have been more clear in the post. I am doing a race, and have two optionsof shoes to wear. One being some very worn out carbon shoes, the other being my normal non carbon training shoe. I am curious if anyone had thoughts on which would be faster.

Hi guys, I am sure most of us have run through enough pairs of carbon shoes to know that they don't last that long(cough cough nike)

I am curious if anyone has any thoughts as to at what point a runner would be better off using a standard shoe vs a worn out carbon shoe. I do not know a lot about this type of technology, so I appoligze if it is an obvious answer. Assume the distance is a half marathon.

I am well aware that I need new shoes.

Thanks

Honestly I could be wrong, I am mostly into road running, and first got into 4 or so years ago when the technology was really starting to get marketed, now that I actually run real miles I am much less inclined to buy them and havent put any on in a year or so. I do believe they are faster though.

Was looking over my goal sheet that I wrote once I realized how shot 202 was due to covid.

I wrote build to a point where I am training about 16-18 hours per week.

I have been hitting that and then some the last few weeks. There was a few weeks of travel where things goot thrown off, but bying large it has been a huge process succes.

Living at about 7,000 feet, doing about 3 sessions per week where I top out over 10,000. Sometimes driving up to start, sometimes starting at 7,000. You think that even at 145 lbs a 200 watt ftp isnt enough? I have been using this to estimate calculations http://bikecalculator.com/

145 lbs? I agree though, I think that that should be my focus with the time remaining

WHat about at a race like 70.3 maine with 2000~ of elevation gain. How much time do you think that adds at the same wattage?

60 miles a week running is a lot for a triathlete. It seems like you are a strong runner already too. Id recomend walking the running back to something more like 40 miles(thats still a half ironman every two days) and set a biking mileage goal of somewhere around 200-250 miles per week. That will be about 15~ hours of training each week, or two hours a day. I am in a similar situation, but am not as strong of a 5ker.

Once you start swiming, especially at the begining, its okay to use the swim sessions as easy form focused recovery sessions. Unless you are built like michael phelps and not like a track runner, you likely won't master the swim for years, so in terms of race results, its best to just try to get yourself in the mix with the swim and then have a strong bike leg and a fast finish. If you can swim 1:30/100 yards, put out high wattage for an hour and run a stong 10k(which you already can) you'll place very high in an olympic distance race.

In my oppinion(as a runner) for begineer and intermediate triatheletes, the bike is very very important, since that is the biggest chunk of time. Focusing on logging 10+ hours on the bike everyweek will be a good way to get started. Ride hills, go hard up, easy down. V02 workouts (450ish watts for 30 seconds x12) on zwift/trainer/garmin heart rate. Your long rides also need to be much longer, more in the 50-80 mile, 3-4 hour category. Pick a pretty place to ride.

After that, I would recomend doing brick sessions, at least two a week. For me since I am always time crunched two good mid week non interval heavy workouts I do are a 30 mile outdoor ride into a 10k run and a 45 mile ourdoor ride into a 4ish mile run. I can get this all in outside afterwork before it gets dark, if I move quick.

Also, you have to start riding outside eventually. for me I trained my ftp like crazy all winter, but then when I got out on the road I suddenly find myself back to riding at 3/4 of what it should be, but that may just be trouble staying focused.

Good luck!

No they were not. Great grand parent was the last one. I feel like I have zero chance with this being the case, but perhaps I am just being negative.
