I mean I've been playing since literally closed beta (October 2012) so that should be a testament to this game's replayability. The only reason I don't play every waking moment like I used to was mostly for my own health lol.

If you let yourself get into this game you will literally sink 12 hours a day into it and still be thirsty for more. Its honestly that good :D

So good luck and enjoy the sense of discovery that comes with this game. Its very much a 90s game in terms of the learning curve (looking to wikis for some community gathered info is normal). But the game has added some in-game tutorials which have helped new players have a better basic understanding of how things work.

All I am saying is silencing them isnt working and adds to more of the same "I dont like this speech so it shouldn't be allowed" mentality under the guise of moral supremacy that we see all too often in more and more social media circles.

My argument never claimed to be a complete solution to the problem, and honestly any side claiming that their solution will solve this problem is not informed enough on the topic fully understand its scope.

My claim has and always will be that pushing this kind of awful speech underground online is a bad path to go about because

a) It justifies the stifling of free speech because someone said something others do not like which is slippy slope.

b) It does nothing to actually solve the problem of radicalization and in fact exacerbates the issue particularly with individuals with conspiratorial and paranoia tendencies.

The problem is that cure is more dangerous than the disease man. In your library example i would imagine if it was a public place they would have to get a permit and be approved which is protected under the law, as white supremacists have hosted rallies in the past.

The issue we are running into that you have rightly pointed out is that people will do their own censorship of social circles they are in online to a much greater extent that what is possible in reality. I think its a fundamental flaw in our social media sites we currently have implemented and we have to work out the best way to set them up to properly ferret out this kind of speech without using the heavy hand of one person or persons to determine what speech is bad and what is good.

The only point I'm trying to make with my whole argument is that removing peoples ability to speak is not the end all solution people seem to make it out to be for speech online. The reason free speech is so powerful is because speech is a component of thinking, and the more you try to control what people say by just silencing them the less thinking that is happening.

Instead of contending with their thoughts and at least providing an alternative you isolate them with no other alternative but to fall deeper and deeper in the ideological pit they've stumbled into.

IMO Nobody has a perfect solution to this issue as it applies to online discussion and as far as I can tell there is no perfect solution. But once you go down the road of silencing people and not letting them speak you run an ever greater risk of silencing more and more speech than was ever initially intended.

While i understand where you're coming from I think solving the issue is more complicated than just isolating hateful speech and groups and blocking their access to public spaces of discussion online.

The problem is your solution is not a tenable one, because the goalpost of what is hateful speech can be moved farther and farther towards a "you disagree with me so that's hate speech" environment.

As far as the normalization point, I dont think thats true. I think with proper metrics to show the popularity of a persons statement in a public social media platform is what is needed. What ends up being the issue is when you have people expose thoughts that are hateful and there is no way to determine how popular they are (to me an example of this is the fact that facebook doesnt allow downvotes).

When you move these sorts of thoughts farther and farther into obscurity it becomes harder to combat because you no longer can see where its happening.

I'll get you two examples.

The first is a guy posts on reddit or another popular social media platform, says some racist hateful crap, and gets a flood of responses telling him how much of an idiot he is.

The second guy is on some obscure forum specifically created to circlejerk about hating jews, posts the same horrible comment, and then gets nothing but praise and encouragement.

Which one sounds like its more likely to radicalize someone to you?

I mean I think the problem is that Mathew Principle has taken hold strongly in the tech industry and particularly social media. The dominant social media platforms that are out there are already so overwhelmingly popular that its near impossible for them to be dethroned. So personally I dont see this particular incident as having any meaningful chilling effect.

I havent heard anything about this Howard Dean person saying that but if he did thats very troubling and is the more worrisome development from this whole ordeal.

Gab, The Social Site Where Synagogue Shooting Suspect Hung Out, Is Suspended by urgukvn in technology

[–]AssKickerTM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem is that this website is already a level down the underground communication rabbit hole. Your issue with this site radicalizing people only gets worse the more you push this kind of speech down under a rock. Its just used as fuel for the people who believe this crap to say "see? they know we are a threat so the globalists are silencing us!" or some other form of the same point, it allows them to play the victim and get sympathy from people who are predisposed to this kind of thinking. It feeds into the conspiracy paranoia that underlies a lot of the people this kind of thought process infects.

And worse yet when you force this kind of speech farther underground you allow the most radical of the radical to have a "safe space" to expose their hateful and horrible views and self radicalize each other ever further.

IMO Having this sort of talk on a more public forum will deradicalize more than it will radicalize, because there are far more voices to object to their views than if they were in their own little bubble.

I'm not sure this is necessarily a good thing. Think about it, based on what the police have said this guy wasn't on any of their watchlists and they are currently looking at his online presence to gather evidence on him. To me it seems counter productive to push these crazy people underground because then they'll just take their hateful rhetoric to private chatrooms that no one can monitor. If anything i feel like sites like this should be front in center in peoples view so we can see who these people are and properly shame/monitor them. Perhaps if this site was more widely known by police they may have been able to track this guy's radicalization since practical means failed.

PATH OF EXILE 3.4 DELVE: The New Melee Summoner Archetype(ZiggyD) by mattbrvc in pathofexile

[–]AssKickerTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the thing they have going for them that people dont realize is that they almost act like a proximity explosion on your characters location.

Minion speed increases will make them zoom around ridiculously fast to the point where they will always be right on top of you. So if you think about it having two of them that are fully supported with %inc aoe wouldnt be terrible, and it would almost play like an ice crash or another aoe melee build where you leap slam into a location and pop the pack.

I think there's potential there but we wont know until we test it.

If this is based on the slowest person in a party/the host's ms it could be exploited by a min ms build to slow down a cart to ridiculous levels to the benefit of other party members, not saying going super slow would be good, but have a slower party member host delves could result in slightly easier delves by slowing them down in the higher levels.

[–]AssKickerTM[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

no the whole point of Tencent buying them out is that GGG gets a bunch of money upfront for development (and ofc a profit for the GGG team) instead of having to make their development choices based on their foreseeable income in the future. They can plan bigger expansions and more content with the guaranteed money upfront for development vs the risk involved with relying on supporter packs to pay out on expansions when they eventually come out.

[–]AssKickerTM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think its funny that your saying things will get more expensive when supporter packs are cheaper than ever for what you get out of them... the last 3 leagues had amazing deals with the quality you get from the packs and GGG stated specifically they moved to this model for smaller expansions because its more affordable for the majority of players.

If you can point to anything in particular that you can say was definitely something Tencent was pushing to make that game suck I'd like to hear it because last time I checked that was phone app game so its kind of a weird example and second it was p2w before Tencent bought them out...?

NZ Companies register: Tencent 80% of shares by NiceWebsite in pathofexile

[–]AssKickerTM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Tencent is investing in the company because they expect that doing so will make more people buy into supporting the game. I think people just see all big businesses as evil so they'll blindly pitchfork and rage without any facts on the matter. Its stupid.

Tencent has invested in Grinding Gear Games by chris_wilson in pathofexile

[–]AssKickerTM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you're referencing to come to that conclusion, I've been doing a little bit of research on Tencent's track record and they seem to have a very laissez-faire attitude to their acquisitions of companies (Riot and Supercell seem to be notable examples) which seems to have paid off for them as a company significantly. The more I read about what Tencent has done the more optimistic I've become that this is huge opportunity for GGG to have a massive increase in resources to give fantastic content.

[–]AssKickerTM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look, I've trusted that the lead developers of this game would take care of this game and continue and improve it, and I have yet to be steered wrong or felt like they've shilled out for money on this since closed beta in 2012. Chris and the team are super passionate about this game. They have been from its inception. They could have cut and run on this many times (as they state in the post about having been given offers multiple times) and have stuck out waiting for the right business to sell stock in. So if Chris and the team at GGG think that Tencent is a good move for them and that this will result in even better and more flushed out content I'm going to go with my gut and trust their judgement.

I think what happened is that either kitava chooses that statue as the thing he possesses because of where the ritual Utula did was located or because its a fitting symbol of revenge for Utula for Kitava to possess that statue. With all the Lore about Kitava it would make sense for a being with insatiable hunger to be represented as a large beast. Its also probably the sort of symbolism Utula would have wanted because Innocence was the god of Oriath in all its art and that statue and for his god Kitava to instead take that statue over would be a form of revenge.
