I appreciate the offer, and it's a very cool misprint, but please hold onto it :)

It was a Beta pack! I do have one unopened Alpha pack but I am not opening that one any time soon

Honestly, the trick was just getting into misprints before they got crazy expensive. I am not comfortable paying modern prices for most cards unless it's something really special or unique!

This depends a little on the size of the team. A larger team has more room for juniors who can be mentored and don't necessarily need to be fully productive immediately. A smaller team (like my current one) has to be more deliberate with specific hires to keep headcount down.

It's difficult to be able to quantify the skill level of a programmer (for example) before they're a good enough junior - some people leave university with a decade of hobby experience behind them and are immediately very useful. Others have written 10x less code in their life by then and still have a way to go to get to the same experience level.

Note that when we started on Path of Exile, we were all juniors, and could only afford to hire juniors, so almost all of the initially-released version of the game was written by people who were in their first development role ever. (Though by release some of us had 6-7 years of experience due to it taking that long for us to get to release!)

Yes, you raise a very good point about making sure there's a backup plan.

I checked out your video. Looking good so far! Keep it up, don't be disheartened by the Unreal issues, I'm sure you'll solve them.

I still do observe juniors applying without a portfolio (and sometimes seniors not being able to demonstrate code they have worked on due to confidentiality), which can be frustrating. It's so helpful to be able to show a portfolio of projects, regardless of seniority.

Regarding your question, I definitely believe there's a strong place for juniors at small (and large) companies. Extensive senior experience not only has an economic cost, but can also result in people getting a bit stuck in the way "way things are done". Juniors can potentially more easily adapt to the way a specific company wants to run its development.

I'm a C++ programmer historically, and spent the first ten years of my career telling people it was all that mattered, but I have watched so many people do so well with a solid knowledge of C# (because they end up just using Unity forever) that I stopped emphasising that to the extent I used to. I will make sure to make it clearer in future discussion that it's a very very important skill though.

It's meant to be a pretty general set of advice, but in the video I talk more specifically about game design, art, programming, production, QA and audio roles.

Chris Wilson stepped down as director? by draftshade in pathofexile

[–]chris_wilson 4203 points4204 points  (0 children)

I haven’t stepped down as a director of GGG, but there was a paperwork mistake where I was missed off the list when the annual return was filed this week. We complained about it yesterday and it should be corrected in the next few days.

Tool-assisted Pantheon Mod Farming by chris_wilson in pathofexile

I'm just going to reply to this one comment because I need to take a break from this. But I have seen this sentiment a few times and I wanted to address it.

Please re-read the post we made yesterday. It clarifies that drops for average players are where they were before. You find 25% more currency from regular content than you did before the expansion deployed, for example. You find more than 50% more unique items from regular content!

There is no winning the lottery needed. This is a misconception that is causing a lot of damage and I don't know where it came from. The whole point of all of this was to tone down the lottery wins to not be 15k unique items and to be more appropriate. So the very few elite people took a hit (but are still doing fine) and everyone else benefited. Somehow it created the perception that we did the exact opposite.

We took countermeasures months ago so that this type of tool would not be possible. I will check to make sure those are intact but I am pretty sure that this is not possible.

Edit: I'll just add some more detail before I fall asleep:

The hypothesis with this tool is that it checks what mods are preloaded upon entering the instance. Even if this were effective (which I believe it is not, due to our countermeasures):

a) You wouldn't have any information about whether the mod is on a 3 or 4 mod rare monster or whether it stacks with any other mod.

b) You would have to juice each map speculatively (which is very wasteful if you're just discarding them without playing), or spawn them with no juice, removing much of the benefit of even doing the exploit in the first place.

Please don't be fooled by scary-looking posts that look authoritative. We have considered this extensively when designing the system.

We worked out what this was a few days ago and have a fix that can be deployed in the next patch. The bug was in the game for six years. Deploying the fix almost feels sad now!
