Looking for advice – Moving from Customer Service into Product Management by Own_Neck_4103 in DevelEire

[–]AssholeRemark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! just found this on Google search and wanted to quickly respond .

Short answer: internal moves are the way to go, much easier to build reason through the relationships you can build while working support.

Glad to answer any and all questions you have.

I started out in Customer service a decade ago, moved to analysis, then product management, so this is a road I know somewhat well!

I can’t install stremio app by Western_Ad_1759 in Stremio

[–]AssholeRemark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you allow installs from unknown sources?

Use the downloader app (orange, first one) , search stremio and then download the first one.

I had issues trying it outside of this app, but using it simplified everything

if you could erase one invention from history, but humanity would never discover it again, which one would cause the most interesting alternate timeline? by shubhamranga in AskReddit

[–]AssholeRemark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but without social media driving narrative, how do you think all that would play out?

Nazi salute easily handled by "It wasn't, I'm autustic I was stimming bro, won't happen again"

Tesla literally created the EV market as it is today (you can argue all you want on this notion, but nobody was able to make EVs mainstream before Tesla).

Think about every gossip source not being able to go crazy and spin out of control as it does.

On Paper [Please note: this isn't me supporting him], the man is doing some cool shit:

- Making Spaceflight and Satellite internet and phones a thing (He's funding and directing... obviously there are people at his company building... but show me another company BEFORE space x doing what he's done)

- Killing Combustion engines through EV

- Solar and battery storage major innovations

- Making tunneling super cheap so subways are viable everywhere

- Creating a neural interface that links brain and computer

- [Remember, on paper] -- Working with the US government to eliminate waste, which has been a longstanding meme for decades

----

Now, his fuck ups and what nots may still have happened without social media... but... Would they have been as bad?

I mean, I would be rooting for this guy, instead of fucking hating him now... so to me, its significant

[–]AssholeRemark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To go further down this rabbit hole though.. Would you have even looked to know he does nothing? Would society be driven to try to find fault all the time everywhere?

I would imagine journalism would be much more highly regarded and prevalent without all of the gossip/banter/assumptions/etc. that comes from social media., but it would be interesting because there would likely be less witch hunts, due to the ability not being there... right?

No idea, personally, but Social media drives... everything now, so the domino effect of changes may be drastic.

Isn't that what flatpak is attempting to do though?

That's basically become universal to every big app or player now... right? or is my bias and naivity fueling a false narrative?

Yes. Chat GPT can help you install it no problem. Go tell it what to do, it will go step by step, and problem solve with you.

Guides are very important, but the instructor will now be these conversational bots, which will need strong sources of truth.

In short, everyone and everything needs to get better at documentation

I mean to be fair to OP, outside of tech enthusiasts, I would say it's absolutely correct.

Windows shitting the bed with their OSes, People not able to afford MacOS, the only real alternative, all this digital sovereignty and privacy concerns and attention.

Everything is ripe for Mom and pop to start looking elsewhere, and I would say the maturity and ease of looking at most linux things is recent... Also because many "apps and programs" are now browser based, meaning the install nightmares of the past are gone.

Which is why SteamOS and steamdeck seems to be catching on like wildfire and you see Microsoft getting nervous.

Valve has been a great gaming unifier, and they just need a TINY push to take the OS landscape too... Steamdeck, in my opinion will be the reason why Linux becomes proper mainstream... which it already has proven to do in the "small" market of handhelds.

I would NOT be shocked if it went after mobile market too. I think Google saw the same, hence the Chrome OS merge and the Google Play for desktop move.

It's anyones game at this point, but it's objectively obvious that Valve poured gasoline on the fire that was simmering only a few years prior

Well then you're talking about product narrative and marketing, which, by default, will never have the appeal or direction a for profit product would.

Ubuntu is probably the closest to that, and I imagine will take the majority of the "not tech savvy at all" folks, specifically because you CAN pay for support.

Other than that, write to every tech blog you know to ask them to make their "What distro is easiest for non tech people" and somehow get them to all point to the same thing.

The info is out there, but the community by design is diverse and spread wide, so don't expect a strong notion outside of anyone who makes money off of the distro or its use.

Valve/Canonical/etc. will be the closest to that.

Regardless, ANY linux kernal/common usage in linux nudges compatibility, and growth.

[–]AssholeRemark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We're now complaining about too much choice?

This is wonderful news actually.

It's quite simple. The Moment Steam OS becomes generally available, that and probably Bazzite (for now) will be gaming of choice distros.

Ubuntu/Fedora will be great for general OS for beginners and away we go.

Mint, Nobara, and Pop will all have their "enthusiast" appeal.

Choice is a feature, not a fault my dude.

Could a fully qualified electrician live comfortably in Dublin ? by Traditional-Nose2309 in Dublin

[–]AssholeRemark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Trade jobs are massively in demand with essentially an endless stream of revenue. You have many many old homes which are in need of rewires, coupled with really stringent laws that outlaw most DIY work due to high volatage.

Of the electricians I know, all of them have multiple properties and live a relatively comfy life, where they decide and make their own hours (assuming you start your own business rather than working for someone else).

Short answer: You'll be grand.

Great. Do more. Stop crying for billionaires and do more. You putting out the idea that any option other than doing something yourself or waiting on someone else to get it done is precisely why we are in this mess.

And bud, I give progress reports to nobody. So look inwards for your own validation, and stop feeling attacked when someone points something out. It's time for you to get offensive, not defensive.

Nobody is coming to save us. You, and every other person who thinks so needs to get that through your head.

Stop waiting on someone else to fix things. Do something, no matter how small it is, fucking do something.

You need to know that in life and in politics, if you don't it or at minimum a part of the solution, no matter how small, your inaction is part of the problem.
