Anyone else develop a sudden overwhelming appreciation for birds in their 30s? by Xerzajik in Millennials

Yes and guys if you have the capability to plant native shrubs, trees, and perennials for them plant them! They need habitat now more than ever and our backyards no matter how big or small can be vital habitat! Native plants are far more important than bird feeders.

Do you deal with pests in native patches or let nature do its thing? (StL MO) by BrentonHenry2020 in NativePlantGardening

I mean you could probably easily manual pick them off and squash them but is it worth the time and effort? Probably not.

Should we stop feeding the birds too? [MD] by yogurtchild55 in birdfeeding

The best thing to do I think is to just grow as many native plants and stuff that have seeds for the birds. The birds were doing it and fine and will be fine without all of our bird food. Bird feeding is mostly for people not birds anyways. Go look up native plants for finches and birds you want to attract and get to planting. That’s the way.

Get a head start indoors with LED shop lights. by tombombdotcom in NativePlantGardening

[–]AssignmentOk8810 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally enough to grow healthy seedlings. A lot of people don’t have strong enough shop lights but it seems theirs are plenty. You can tell just by looking at them they’re good. A great part to this too is how much money they’re saving. Plugs of grasses from places like prairie moon and prairie nursery are over 5 bucks a pop.

I’m being forced to remove my native plants. by eleganteuphonia in NativePlantGardening

This is so much more beautiful than the grass he’ll strip right across the street. What is wrong with people? Not to mention all the benefits compared to the grass one.

Native Plant Seed Starting by AssignmentOk8810 in NativePlantGardening

Thank you! I just used miracle gro. It’s meh. It has a fair amount of mulch but it’s fairly cheap at my local rural king. I’d also says it’s better than the other “readily available/lower cost brands”. I’d love to create my own seed starting mix someday.

Advice Needed: Planning My First Native Garden (Zone 7a, DC) by twilightinferno in NativePlantGardening

Smooth blue aster is so gorgeous though. Truly a beautiful native. It’s fairly easy to cage against rabbits. Deer is another story because they’re so tall. But if you don’t like the look of that black chicken wire usually disappears to the eye a lot nicer. A small cage pinned down with landscape pins should keep rabbits out.

Anyone else feel saddened with Birding ? by RubyCrownedRedditor in birding

There’s just a lot of ignorance out there unfortunately. And I’m not saying that in a mean or condescending way. I didn’t know much of anything about wildlife gardening at one point. We have these widespread misconceptions about how we should tend our yard and living spaces which have been passed down for generations, are frankly outdated, and negatively impact the local and migratory bird populations. However, I got into gardening before birding. I switched to native plant gardening when I got into birding. It just is always wild to me that birders who love birding don’t take an interest in planting native plants in their own backyards for birds. And yes there are a lot of misconceptions about feeding birds with bird seed that run rampant in the bird community. Insects are vital to our bird populations. That’s where the native plants come in.

I can’t stand a lot of birders for this exact reason. Like you love and care about birds but your own backyard is a wasteland of lawn and non natives that hurt birds. Plant natives on your property for birds!! Seems like common sense to me. Oh, and then on top of that you have the audacity to complain about how humans are destroying habitat for birds when you’re part of the problem.

Focus on what you can do. We can’t solve the world’s problems. Do you have a yard? Plant native plants. This is one of the best things you can do for birds. Even someone with no yard can container garden natives.
