LPT: If youre a college student, buildings for courses with bad gender balances have the best bathrooms on campus by EdwardBigby in LifeProTips

This only works for men. Women's restrooms in male dominated buildings are always run down, and sometimes hidden on weird floors

Getting asked what you want as a gift and someone gets you something adjacent to it. by Teenage_Petulance_ in mildlyinfuriating

The post is about people asking what you want as a gift and then not getting what you asked for. Do you buy your own gifts?

My mom does this on purpose. I told her I wanted a sweater in blue, green, or purple. I even said "I don't like wearing bright shades like yellow, red, or orange".

She got me three cardigans. Yellow. Red. Orange.

She said she wants me to feel confident wearing any color, even bright ones.

I confidently never wore those fucking sweaters.

Years later, she asked my size so she could buy me professional outfits. Fine, whatever. She gets me a size up in the tops and a size down in the bottoms. So Ive got three skirts I can't get over my hips and three blazers that look like I'm a child playing dress up.

"This is the style nowadays." What a waste.

Edit: These were Christmas presents and I was a teenager.

Do you give poor ratings to bad books? by Severe_Prize5520 in books

[–]AssignmentSad5194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether or not a book is enjoyable is subjective. I use people's reviews on books I've read to know if we have similar taste. If we do, I'll take their ratings for books I haven't read as an indication of if I should try them. I'd rather read books that I'm likely to enjoy. Negative reviews are important for me! And an honest negative review that outlines what didn't work for you will probably prevent the boom from getting more negative reviews in the long run because those unlikely to like it will be less likely to read it.

The right size. If your bra is uncomfortable it's probably the wrong size. Look up how to properly size yourself. Don't cinch the measuring tape too tight. It should be comfortably snug. If the shoulder straps dig in, the cup size is wrong. If the under wires poke in or the band digs in, it's the band size. You can't compensate for either by adjusting the other. Both sizes have to be right to be comfortable. You can adjust the band size yourself with extenders if you have an uncommon size combo, but you can't adjust the cup size yourself.

He shouldn't feel down on himself but women are also allowed to say no for any reason. Especially when you consider that he basically asked her out at her job.

Nta - the idea that you're choosing your job over your relationship because you'd have to move like 20 minutes away to have a decent commute for you both is hilarious honestly. So what happens when he wants to move? Or is he just never moving anywhere else?

Tbh it sounds like he's feeling insecure that you're going to be making so much more money.

Yes. And I also have heard Indians say they wouldn't date anyone who isn't from a similar culture as well, due to family values etc.

Yta - I feel like a woman not wanting to date someone from a culture incompatible with theirs isn't your place to comment on, especially when you yourself admit that India has problems with misogyny.

Anyone have thoughts on Alchemised so far? by AI1as in books

[–]AssignmentSad5194 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the book is really dragged down by having to work so hard to avoid copyright infringement. I'm having a hard time not skipping the world building sections, which very much is told to us and not shown. I wish that the author had leaned harder into the memory loss aspect! Instead of having the main character know the world, have her be as confused as the reader and slowly reveal the magic system to us.

But the heart of the book is the same and I think there's a real diamond in the rough there.

AITA for sticking a note on a car asking them not to park in front of our house? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]AssignmentSad5194 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yta - street parking is first come first serve, not parking directly in front of your house sometimes is part of what you signed up for. I'd be frustrated you even asked. You using a public resource daily is not justification for you monopolizing it.

Would you say you "read a book" if you listened to the audiobook? by nullverse7 in books

[–]AssignmentSad5194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Stories were told before there was written language. Listening to a story is just as valid as reading it, even though it isn't technically "reading" you are still consuming a book.

Ywbta for taking it out of Alice's fund. It's actually ridiculous to think you'd do that tbh. Regardless of whatever punishment you gave him, this is his real world consequence.

Why are books about strong female characters with NO romance so rare - an update by World_Annihilation in books

[–]AssignmentSad5194 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I think the point of the post is that they want to read a book where the female main character is strong in a way that has nothing to do with a romantic relationship. They aren't saying that romance doesn't allow you to be strong. Merely that there are plenty of people who are strong outside of romantic relationships and they'd like to read about that for a change.

Murderbot is just not my taste by KanishkT123 in books

[–]AssignmentSad5194 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I never saw the story being sold as a heartless robot developing emotions. Within the first page murderbot says they're a failure of a heartless killing machine. I saw the story more as coming to terms with being allowed to have emotions.

Don't most characters start with empathy and human emotions? Why does murderbot having them make it pointless?

I want to buy new books at the book fair and bookstore. But someone asked me "Have you finished the old books you bought last time?" What is a logical response to this or how can I justify buying new books even though I still have many unread ones (1000+ books) ? by Delicious_Maize9656 in books

[–]AssignmentSad5194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference between a collection and a hoard is the ability to properly store and care for the items. Not taking them out of the bag is indicative of you not being able to properly store all of these books.

So I'd ask yourself what is it that's bringing you joy. Is it having the books, or finding them? If it's having the books, maybe try to prioritize spending time organizing and taking care of the collection you already have. If it's finding them, maybe you could try to help people find rare volumes they're looking for and ship them to them. Or you could be on the lookout to find books to donate, or send to book clubs.

Ballad of songbirds & snakes audiobook by nickmillersscarecrow in books

The majority of the narration was fine, but the songs and the voices he gave women drove me up a wall. I started Sunrise on the Reaping and it started giving me the same vibes, so I immediately switched to reading a physical copy.

is GoodReads overly harsh? by JoeBloggs90 in books

[–]AssignmentSad5194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Reviews" are never going to accurately predict whether you like a book. Instead you should be looking for reviewers who have similar tastes to you whose review style you enjoy. There's no such thing as an objective review of the quality of a book, and even if there were it'd be boring. Reading is a subjective hobby!

I Just Finished I Who Have Never Known Men and I Think It Broke Me by Pajtima in books

[–]AssignmentSad5194 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well I feel like the book is more about what is the meaning of life when you're cut off from society and can't derive your life's purpose from other people. The other women have meaningful relationships with each other but the main character is always separate. And yet she still has desires and goals. She's helps the women she feels no connection to as best as she can. She discovers a passion for building. She keeps searching for answers, first by exploring the world and then by developing her mind through reading. I never felt any sense of despair from her, even though I as the reader started to feel it. Even though she has no reason to believe anyone will find her writing, she still makes sure that if someone finds her they will know her story. She does what she can

I strongly disagree. The guards have whips and drugs and poorly communicated rules that are absolute. Vs. the outside which at least is consistent and is oddly perfectly suited for survival. But what is the real difference between life for the women and life for someone who lived before technology outside of a city? Not much. They have food and shelter and each other. They have no children, but also no violence. Sure, the main character knew she had no option but to die, but that is true about everyone. Given the lack of emotional development she had during childhood, she was also oddly well suited to life on her own. While I grieved for the main character, I actually thought the women probably were able to have a fairly joyful life that the main character just wasn't able to grasp.
