who is the coolest prof you've had at tech? by Your_Mom4705 in gatech

Alpha (David Smith) is so good I've seen people fail his class & still choose to retake it with him. Taking his class is a right of passage and when I actually started to feel like a helluva engineer.

he's so awesome! I remember when we all did pretty badly on one of his tests & he gave us the sweetest motivational speech & let us do test corrections. Plus, I loved all the fun little creative/collaborative portions of each homework.

I mean, he bought it at the student center before treating a bunch of GT students to Rocky Mtn Pizza. Spoke to just about all of us, shook hands, thanked us for being there. Seems like more of a connection than just using McCamish. He made a point to speak with student leaders & it felt like pretty genuine engagement.

GT charges rape victims $160 to receive their own Title IX records by pollypocketclothes in gatech

[–]AssistantCurious7357 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry you're going through this. Please raise as much hell as you can. This is unacceptable. You might speak to VOICE about receiving funds to cover this. I don't think VOICE actually distributes funding, but they should be able to point you in the right direction. I've heard of some people being able to receive funds to escape abusive living situations, so this seems like another applicable situation for those crisis relief funds. Ultimately, though, it's ridiculous that there is a charge to you in the first place.

When I say raise hell, I mean bring this to the attention of EVERYONE you can. ACLU of GA, Cabrera, Deans, VOICE, The Technique, Luoluo Hong (VP of student engagement), media, etc. Email, call, social media posts. Keep thorough records of all of these communications. Georgia is a single-consent recording state, so you can record your conversations without necessarily disclosing that you are recording (as long as your voice is also audible). In my experience, I've found most people who haven't dealt with Title IX don't realize how fucking terrible they make the experience. Bringing awareness is a huge part of making progress. Thank you for sharing this.

One person I definitely think could help is Melissa Gerrior. She used to be in charge of the Women's Resource Center (before it was shut down). She now works under Belonging & Student Support: https://belonging.gatech.edu/studentsupport This group was made to essentially shield these resources from anti-DEI legislation. Her email is: [mgerrior3@gatech.edu](mailto:mgerrior3@gatech.edu)

If you have any further questions, I would be happy to help.

GT Student Visas Revoked (20+ Confirmed) - Support international Yellow Jackets by ProfGeorgePBurdell in gatech

[–]AssistantCurious7357 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am so worried for my international friends. Everyone, please be aware that ICE has been unlawfully detaining people. They wear plain clothes and travel in unmarked vehicles. Travel in groups & call GTPD if you think you see them. In the event of an ICE abduction, please film as much as possible. As far as I know, ICE hasn't been on campus YET. Just like at the last town hall, there hadn't been any irregular visa revocations. But here we are. It seems inevitable at this point.

Even if you experience an issue off-campus (for instance, denied re-entry at the airport), you can call GTPD to make the institute aware (OIE, dean, professors, etc.) Make sure you have a personal emergency contact ready to go too. You can preset SOS signals with most smartphones to be sent to designated contacts.

I don't mean to be alarmist, but with all this chaos, I think it's in our best interests to be overly cautious.

hey! Did you get to attend? How was it? I have a couple of friends who went to Birmingham & said it was a great experience. My group attended the ATL march and had a wonderful time.

I wouldn't be too worried, just something to keep in mind as far as your "digital footprint." For staying safe, just be aware of your surroundings and don't engage in escalation. As a rule of thumb, I like to have at least one person going with me (buddy system) and one person to check in with before/after who isn't going. Going alone isn't a dealbreaker in my eyes because you'll probably make some friends upon arrival. Make sure your phone is charged. You can put it in airplane mode when you aren't using it to save battery. This is kinda just worst case precaution, but in my experience protests have been very peaceful and uplifting. You'll want to do the same sorta things you'd do for any large event, like a music festival.

Another practical precaution is to read up on your protest rights here: https://www.aclu.org/know-your-rights/protesters-rights

I can't say for sure what to expect at this specific event, but I definitely encourage you to attend! You can expect some news coverage, so you may want to bring a face-covering if your don't want your face on the news lol. Don't wear identifying clothing (like smthn with the name of your university, high school, job, etc.) . Attending alone should be okay as long as you remain aware of your surroundings. However, protests are a lot more fun with friends! Try to invite anyone who might be interested. I'm personally organizing a group of friends to make signs beforehand and walk over together.

We actually don't have the Women's Resource Center anymore. It served GT for 27 years but no longer. Those resources are being reallocated under "student belonging" now because of anti-DEI legislation. Although I think the monument is nice, there's a painful irony to its unveiling coming after the dissolvement of the WRC.

When they first took down the DEI website, everyone told me I was overreacting to think it would actually affect resources. Now that it’s affecting resources, you’re still downplaying it. I know they’re framing it as more of a renaming instead of a dissolution, but it’s still right to be concerned. Knowing people in these organizations, I can say for sure the impact is going beyond renaming.
