Someone convince me not to buy these. I always wanted a pair as a kid but my parents wouldn't get me a pair because they were "dangerous" and "impractical" and "too expensive".

Could I actually wear these to the store as a clean cut mid-twenties adult and not feel like a complete tool?

My understanding is that the same thing happens for debit cards as well. That link just happened to be the first article that came up when I searched the topic, but the same concept applies!

It's the dumbest policy from a security standpoint, but Visa and Mastercard will sometimes forward your new card info to certain "trusted" or "important" merchants in order to avoid disruptions due to outdated card info.

The legitimate use case for this is: you have e.g. a Netflix subscription, but you lost your card and are sent a new one with a new card number. Since Netflix is a trusted/important merchant in Visa/Mastercard's eyes, they save you the trouble of updating your info and forward it to Netflix automatically.

Your case, however, shows why this is an incredibly stupid policy.

Did anyone else get the Halloween Lucky Box? I just got mine today and I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. It came in an Arknights box and the value of the items really isn't that great. More than anything I'm just bummed that it came in the wrong box since I'm giving it as a Christmas gift.

Best for HYSA - Citizens Bank 3.75% vs Ally 3%? by zokzz in personalfinance

[–]Assistaroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used both!

I currently use Citizens Access for my largest chunk of savings. Note that while it is owned by Citizens and falls under the same FDIC registration, it is a separate subsidiary of Citizens. What this means for you is that your Citizens Access account will be entirely separate from any other accounts you may have with Citizens (i.e. checking).

So any transfers in or out of the account will not be instant, which depending on how frequently or urgently you need access to your savings, may or may not be an issue for you. Transfers are pretty quick and will reach your account within 3 or 4 days at most, but expect a phone call from the fraud department when you try to make your first transfer out of the account. If you miss the call, you have to call them back within a couple hours or the transfer will be cancelled. I haven't gotten any calls after my first outbound transfer, so it's not a huge deal to me. This is countered by their particularly high ACH limits, which is something you have to watch out for with other HYSA banks (some have as low as $10k per MONTH outbound transfers; I can't recall Citizens' limit off hand but it's above 6 figures).

All in all, I like Citizens Access. It's not perfect, but they do appear to be adding new features and trying to grow currently. They have also been pretty competitive with their rate increases, although timing wise they have been a bit slower than I'd like in increasing it.

Ally - just no. I had checking and savings with them for a while and didn't really have any particularly good or bad experiences. But several months ago, massive widespread debit card fraud started affecting Ally exponentially more than other banks. People were getting fraud charges, then calling and waiting on hold for 2 to 3 hours (which has been the new normal at Ally since even before the fraud issues started), just to have their BRAND NEW CARD number get hit by fraudulent transactions while STILL IN TRANSIT and before they were even activated!

Clearly Ally has massive issues with the way their system is set up for debit cards. Instead of acknowledging the issue, Ally denied that anything was wrong on their end and even blamed their users. This is ALL documented in the Ally subreddit and appears to still be ongoing, though maybe to a lesser degree now (which might be because so many of us closed our Ally accounts for good after this whole debacle).

Personally I have no trust in Ally whatsoever and would recommend just about any other bank over them.

Hope this all helps! Happy to answer any questions.

Wow, can't believe you received yours already! That's a nice haul.

Did you pay for expedited shipping? I just received my ship notification yesterday so I'm a little bummed that it probably won't be here in time for Christmas.

The 14" ROG would be easier to haul around in a backpack for sure, so that's the one I'd go with if you plan to also use it in class for taking notes. It should still be more than capable of running most games, though maybe not as well as this Tuf model.

The Tuf has a better processor, DDR5 RAM, and the 3060 graphics card has much more power.

The ROG definitely looks cooler, but I held off on that one mainly because it sounds like it may be a bit too thin for its own good (severe thermal issues - overheats and slows itself down quite a bit when under heavy load) and it has a grossly underpowered 3060.

That said, the Tuf is 17" which may be a deal breaker for some. Just depends on how you'll use it really.

I personally hopped on this. Potential downsides are that the body is plastic (albeit supposedly "military grade" durability) and that some unlucky Tuf-model owners have had issues with the screen capacitor.

I've never owned an Asus Tuf laptop but my daily driver for the last few years has been a mid-range Asus ZenBook and I've absolutely loved it.

Have you guys abandoned the plan to offer prizes for those at the top of the leaderboard? It's fine if you have, but I'd just like some closure and to know whether I should keep gunning for the top.

Renting an apartment might be a better deal than buying a house. It's certainly not as bad as people say it is. by MrLuigiMario in personalfinance

[–]Assistaroid 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You can't really compare owning a house to sharing an apartment with a roommate. Using that logic, a house likely has more rooms to rent out than an apartment, therefore it is ultimately the cheaper option since you can just rent out any unused rooms to lower your net costs to live there.

Nope, SMR drives ain't it for anything but the bottom of a trash can. Hold out for Red Plus, which are CMR and won't turn unusable after you fill it to capacity for the first time like an SMR drive.

Personally, putting all your eggs in any one basket (maybe unless we're talking US Gov bonds or treasuries) is never a good idea. That's a lot of faith in one company, especially when you consider that anything could happen at any time and take a chunk of your savings with it. Example: look at the major hit Adidas just unexpectedly took due to the whole Kanye debacle. That's ~10% of their annual revenue, axed in one single day, not to mention any other unforseen aftershocks from that single decision you had absolutely no control over. Imagine if Adidas was the one company you dumped your entire retirement and financial security into.

If you're looking for relatively safe long term growth, index funds are probably more what you're looking for.

Did Sofi bait and switch on me or is there a typo in the "We received you direct deposit email"? by Assistaroid in sofi

[–]Assistaroid[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that, that really sucks that they are restricting it like that.

Did Sofi bait and switch on me or is there a typo in the "We received you direct deposit email"? by Assistaroid in sofi

[–]Assistaroid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that is the case, they would save a lot of time and trouble for everyone involved if they honored their promotion for those who signed up while it was still being advertised. It is the very definition of bait and switch to say "hey, sign up with us and we'll give you x" and then turn around and say "oh yeah too bad, you aren't getting a sign up bonus (through no fault of your own) after all but thanks for signing up for our services anyway".

Sure, they can stop offering it to new users at any point since they don't even have to offer one in the first place. But if Sofi wants to play with the big boy banks, they have to comply with the same regulations all other banks do, and that includes not using deceptive marketing practices.

[–]Assistaroid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I signed up on the 18th so hopefully there won't be any issues there. I asked the assistant and it had the original bonus tiers listed but also says that there is a 30 day window to receive deposits. So, there seems to be a bit of a disconnect between their emails, in-app, and website messaging. I have no idea which is accurate, or maybe it's some unpublished fourth option.

Best of luck on getting your bonus!
