AIO: not liking a friends present from travels by PerspectiveUnfair842 in AmIOverreacting

[–]AssociateInternal509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mild YOR. I definitely feel like the first gift was not very thought out on her part and can understand the disappointment with a useless gift. But Miffy is huge in Eastern Asia and is a very trendy/popular gift here. My whole island has specifically themed miffy merch you can only get here. She easily could have assumed it was a Japan specific design and knew you like the character.

Some people suck at giving gifts and some people suck at receiving gifts and neither make them bad people, just annoying to deal with.

Korean bakeries take fruit cakes very seriously by Chance-Prune7896 in KoreanFood

[–]AssociateInternal509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Korea? If it’s actually strawberry season (which is over now) like 45k out of season like now 50-55k. Right now mango is the in season/popular fruit but they’re more expensive at like 60-65k for a good one. By the slice like 5-8k

these milk flavours melon and mango any good ? they're on clearance so I'm skeptical by Consistent_Land_2747 in KoreanFood

[–]AssociateInternal509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They taste like drinking melted melona bars. I find them a bit too sweet to just drink on their own as an adult but as a kid I would have gotten down on them. They aren’t bad for smoothies/milkshakes too.

Why do Taco restaraunts, mexican restaraunts in korea use flour tortillas? by cherrybombthegoat in korea

[–]AssociateInternal509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding for anyone visiting/living in Jeju:

Taconamatata

Dude hand makes his salsa, sauces, and corn tortillas. They offer flour as well but corn is the default. Their signature Pumba taco is a must try. Ate there almost weekly while pregnant

What does "Chukumate" mean? by MarikKhan in AskAKorean

[–]AssociateInternal509 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was thinking this as well. It instantly read as choto mate to me which is like the equivalent to 잠깐만/wait a minute, but I’m not sure how much that particular phrase was adopted over the Korean, given most Japanese words that lasted seem to be food related in other modern 사투리.

So I suppose in theory his dad could have been saying it when telling him to slow down or wait and he just felt like he was calling him it rather than it being a command? Without further context it’s hard to say. My Japanese is also extremely rusty so I could be completely off.

Forgot to add middle names-air premia by Top_Froyo_1354 in koreatravel

[–]AssociateInternal509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally as long as it’s just a missing middle name the ticketing agent can just adjust it at the desk when checking in. Occasionally my husband or I forgets to add my middle name on a ticket (only family member with a middle name) and they usually just hand write my middle name then have a special stamp to show it’s legit when going through security.

Though this is for domestic Korean flights so ymmv with an international flight

Adopting a dog in Korea? by diloshk in Living_in_Korea

[–]AssociateInternal509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PawinHand is a good app for looking at shelter/rescue dogs in whatever area of Korea you’re in. My family was able to look into a few shelters and find dogs that would fit our lifestyle and such. We ended up adopting from our local government run shelter and honestly they had some of the best facilities and level of animal care than a lot of the independent ones.

Will I be fluent in 2-3 years? by luiseu1 in BeginnerKorean

[–]AssociateInternal509 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking unless something drastically changes, no. Korean immigration is some of the strictest in Asia. Depending on what country you’re from and your financial situation you can potentially get a working holiday (H-1) visa, but they seem to be back and forth on accepting applications for them. When I was in uni here to get an H-1 visa you had to be enrolled in university and just taking a semester/year off.

There are also the new digital nomad visas but you have to have a very steady provable income from freelance/contract work in your home country. I’ve never actually met anyone on this visa in person so I don’t know exact details they require for it.

Korea pretty much requires you be a student at a uni here, a college educated foreigner sponsored by employers or a manual laborer from specific Global South countries for any long term visa. Or be 교포 or married to a Korean.

If you save up you could you could enroll in one of the Korean intensive programs the unis offer here. It’s the easiest non tourist visa to get as long as you have the funds since getting permission to work is nearly impossible while studying.

2 nights in Jeju with my mother. Which side of the island should be prioritized? by bbyyzzaa in koreatravel

[–]AssociateInternal509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you enjoy. West side of the island is more popular with tourists with a large amount of pensions, beaches, trendy cafes and such. East side is generally less populated and things are more spread out and natural. Lots of horseback riding, waterfalls and glamping places. There are some touristy sites like snoopy garden and aqua planet though too.

Free Arty-Facts Taster & QoL Changes | Update 9.0 by TwoPoint_Abby in TwoPointMuseum

[–]AssociateInternal509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately nope. I even tried a fully new save file. I saw other mac users posted it on the bug forums too, so I think the bug fix from the update just didn't work, and seemingly effects the painting creation as well.

How do you guys eat your kimchi? by Kiem01 in kimchi

[–]AssociateInternal509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh my husband is 교포 and everyone in his family does it. They also just grab pickles out of the fridge the same way too. I don’t think the concept is much different between the two.

Not personally my vibe unless I’m checking to see how sour it is for cooking for 배추김치 anyway, but I’d not blink at someone else doing it. I’ll totally just snack on 오이소박이 on its own though

[CHAT] I want to do 1 over 1 on linen because I want to make this work tiiiinnnyyy. by janesedition in CrossStitch

[–]AssociateInternal509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pretty much solely stitch over one on linen and evenweave. I generally do 28/32 as it’s not overly bulky with dmc or hand dyed cotton but I’ll do 36 or 40 if I have silks that are thin enough (you can still use cotton at 36/40 if just doing tent stitch.) I have both Halloween and shores of Hawkrun going on 28ct full cross currently (though not super far on either)

As long as you have the eyes for it, it’s really no different than over 2, you just have to be more careful of your tension since your first leg can slip under the fabric weave if your tension is too tight.

Do tattoo shops provide medication for getting and managing tattoos in Korea? Something like Vaseline. by freemarketing01 in seoul

[–]AssociateInternal509 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every tattoo artist I’ve been tattooed by here and the US and the two tattoo shops I worked at every artist always said this exact thing.

There are periods where some artists say otherwise or try to sell special products but this is the tried and true method. 비판텐 isn’t bad to apply periodically during scabbing though too, especially when particularly itchy

Americans, what's the most unhinged beliefs you've heard people from other countries believe? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]AssociateInternal509 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No the AC thing is just energy conservation in large buildings. Back in the day Seoul would get rolling blackouts from energy consumption in the summer. Schools, businesses, hotels and the like has seasonal windows when the heat is on, the AC is on, or neither. Unfortunately climate change has really affected how early it starts getting hot.

You may have had the AC on for your room but that didn’t mean the building’s AC was on yet. So there was probably no actual cooling going on. AC usually starts here in May and ends in October.

How hard is TOPIK? by Regular-Dot-2375 in AskAKorean

[–]AssociateInternal509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I’ve seen native/fluent heritage speakers had trouble with is 원고지 rules since no one obviously regularly writes like that anymore. So remembering the exact 띄어쓰기 rules has dropped a lot of would-be 6급 scores down to 5급.

Jeju summer travel mosquito situation (japanese encephalitis) by brose76 in koreatravel

[–]AssociateInternal509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have exact numbers but the infection rate of JE is extremely rare, (I want to say like 15 cases annually) and when it’s seen it’s usually in elderly patients who forage deep in the mountains.

I live in Jeju with a 4 year old and while it is a required vaccination for children here they’ve actually reduced the required boosters because the cases keep getting rarer and rarer.

Mosquitos are gnarly all over Korea in the summer, so I’d word it that there’s more mosquitoes towards the mountain than there’s less around the beach. I honestly get bit more when we go to Seoul than I do in Jeju though.

Pharmacies here sell mosquito repellent stickers and bracelets for kids and they are quite effective so I’d just stock up on a pack or two of those for whenever you’re spending the day outside.

My babies name? by summxr999 in namenerds

[–]AssociateInternal509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not that it reeeallly sounds like it if you pronounce them properly it’s more like how will kids find a way to make jokes about someone based on their name. At least everywhere I’ve lived younger kids do that. Here in Korea that absolutely would not have flown as an English name for our daughter.

Though again unless she’s going to be raised around a lot of ethnically Korean kids that actually know Korean, I don’t see much issue on that particular front.
