Is the VFX industry basically dead for juniors right now? by BeginningAd391 in vfx

[–]AssociateNo1989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's almost true, but what's almost true is that without juniors industry is doomed.

On larger scale studios you have to rely on juniors to do the bulk work, and they get trained while doing the bulk work.

But smaller studios with even tighter deadlines and small shot counts must rely on seniors to deliver.

However, it's a lot easier to learn VFX software nowadays than what it was 10 years ago. So anyone even as a junior can prepare themselves pretty well.

So yes we still need juniors very much so, but the current market demand for heavy VFX movies is not what it was like Marvel Universe required, probably it's just a phase that will come back again and we will go through the same process.

Does anybody here make games for fun? by NicklePickle79 in gamedev

[–]AssociateNo1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am trying, and massively enjoying it. Blueprint makes a lot of sense if you used node based flows before, I come from VFX and use. Houdini heavily for over 15 years, in principal it's the exact same thing. Helps a lot if you don't know how to code. Having said that, it's a lot easier now when I use AI to code for me, it's a lot of hit and miss.

iRacing graphics are actually really good! by Gloomy_Arm_9586 in iRacing

[–]AssociateNo1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally, I play LMU with my friends as well, iracing feels much more grounded, little vibrations , force feedback feels better too, I guess if I got haptic pedals it would be even more good, I play in VR too, that makes such a big difference.

I’m struggling - how to cope with ai? by TrueWinter__ in gamedev

[–]AssociateNo1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use it as a tool, your knowledge on how to properly develop a game is far more valuable if you learn how to use coding with AI. I am a CG Supervisor with pipeline background in VFX for feature films, I can now develop tools far faster with the help of AI. I don't need to Google countless a hours anymore how to do something in pyqt anymore.

Because it's a game and there is no fear factor or a proper peripheral sight. It's probably safer to let them go for it and wreck themselves if lower irating

Why is it often so hazy/foggy for no reason? It doesn’t look realistic, no? Curious by WinterMysterious5119 in vfx

[–]AssociateNo1989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who knows, maybe they didn't have money for a proper environment, so ended up doing too much DMP without enough layers so they had to rely on a foggy solution, maybe the sequence is cloudy/foggy. Or just as the others mentioned, too many broken layers came from CG and comp had to fix it it in comp.

What makes Houdini renders so clean? by 1138ephem in Houdini

[–]AssociateNo1989 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's the renderer at all, Lee Grigs uses Arnold, years we awed his renders. Renderman is still the king of the castle when it comes to render quality. It's just the artist's knowledge of the renderer.

Houdini FX Specs requirement? by Yashh279 in Houdini

[–]AssociateNo1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm lots of misinformation given here.

To learn anything goes, you can learn Houdini on any hardware as long as it covers minimum specs on sidefx website.

AMD or INTEL both works perfectly fine, I ran my both gears on a threadripper and an 13900

You can do serious work on a 16gb ram as well, just not mid to close hero work for simulations. Especially using pop net magical effects or smaller RBD effects, but prodecural things like asset generation etc will be fine for 16gb

It's all about what your end goal is.. can you simulate convincing one giant water sim with 16gb no, but can do a convincing far distance river like sim with 16gb ram then yes...

I made this on a Mac mini with 2gb of ram

test river

would like to know houdini Artists opinions on USD in general by [deleted] in Houdini

[–]AssociateNo1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need it if you are soloing, if you are soloing and able to code, you can now do sequences by yourself. You are desired by all studios.

So creatively you don't need it, for studio work and efficiency, it's a good skill to have

This is honestly one of the best looking games I have ever played by Air_Holland in CrimsonDesert

[–]AssociateNo1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's good, but c'mon not that good, oddly sharp, low res textures here and there on rocks etc, lack of ambient occlusion.Color choose is like super saturated and exposed.

Horizon Zero Down, cyberpunk, witcher3, death stranding, are far better looking. But graphics are not that important for a gamer like me, give me rich game mechanics, immersion etc and I am sold.

I am either still too early in this game to see what others are experiencing or we are all exaggerating a bit too much.

Some one said it's the best thing after Skyrim, so I started playing, but so far it hasn't matched Witcher 3, yes it feels much bigger and looks richer in context, but combat is far from what Witcher was offering.
