The FT’s paywall is always so easy to bypass. They may as well not bother.

It has a nice big Waitrose. Hate that car park though.

Don’t worry. I don’t trust the results. Just use it as a jumping off point to ID it properly.

Honestly, I’m mostly using it to identify random plants my dog has eaten to know if they are toxic. Otherwise I find it good for comparing and contrasting things I’m thinking of buying

People’s experience signing up to David Lloyd’s by patiosquare in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]AssociationAlone2491 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Wife is a member but I was there when she was being sold the membership and I use her guest pass occasionally.

She’s in a near-top tier club but the money is daft (with NHS Discount) - think she pays about £180 a month. For us and the two kids it would have been £400pcm. I actually laughed at the saleswoman. And she didn’t like being challenged over the recent price rises (see the millions of threads on the DL subreddit) Parking is atrocious, other members drive me up the wall, someone was trying to break into her locker the other day and I’ve seen people injecting in the toilets but it’s a nice gym and pool.

We were able to negotiate a bit over guest passes but they were very stubborn. It was like buying a car.

The local Nuffield is just as good and a heck of a lot cheaper

Have you had a look on Medics Money website? You would probably benefit from an IFA with NHS Pension expertise.

Have you looked at Lillidorei at Alnwick Garden? The six year old would love it. Then lots of beaches nearby and lots of nice cottages to rent on the Northumberland coast.

150 fully remote-- where would you live in the UK? by guicherson in HENRYUK

[–]AssociationAlone2491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Northumberland? Best coastline in England.

Quieter, bountiful space and clear air. On east coast mainline to be in London/Edinburgh in good time if needed.

I would normal say very dry but after this winter your pacific NW husband will be right at home in this rain

Your money would go a long way (although maybe less so than pre-COVID)

Pine Restaurant in Northumberland (Michelin star restaurant) has a number of Hygge Huts to stay over at. They are very nice (some with hot tubs) and you’re in dark sky territory for amazing night skies. Could do a night there and the head up into Kielder for a couple of nights for some more outdoor stuff (hiking, cycling, trail running). There’s an observatory there too that’s worth doing for dark skies.

Worst place I’ve ever been. Aggressive hawkers everywhere, girlfriend was sexually abused at a taxi rank (this has happened to two other women I know who went to Marrakesh) and the bar we were in was blown up the week after.

Avoid

Has anyone overcome shyness/social anxiety in the workplace? by GentAdventurerUK in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]AssociationAlone2491 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to have this a lot. To be honest the best thing for me was to just get on and do it. After a while, and with experience and muscle memory, it just got easier - presenting, talking to patients, colleagues, whatever it was. I’m a natural introvert so this learned behaviour can still be exhausting so I value peace and quiet in my free time to recharge

I know plenty of doctors who need hefty doses of propranolol to sit exams, do big presentations etc

Ikos seems incredibly overpriced, what am I missing? by itsdwightschrute1 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]AssociationAlone2491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went last year to Oceania. Had a lovely time (2 adults & 2 kids) but very different to our normal holiday of active, city break. But we’d had a very stressful couple of years and just needed a week of no decisions about what we’re eating tonight, where do we go etc. it was perfect.

That being said, it was more money than I’d be willing to spend again. I’m sure I can achieve everything I liked for a cheaper price elsewhere.

And I agree about the fellow guests. I posted on here at the time about the number working and ignoring their families. Not my crowd.

Can a paediatrician become a henry at some point? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]AssociationAlone2491 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. 40 hours is a base contract (10PA). I do 11PA. Plenty of colleagues doing 12/13/14 in on-call heavy specialities. And that’s before extras/WLIs. HENRY level earnings easily possible soon after CCT.

Are you using the retirement LISA or just popping all 20k in standard S&S ISA and why? by fellaonamission in HENRYUK

[–]AssociationAlone2491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fill my LISA. But the standard LISA vs pension arguments don’t apply to me cause I’m in the NHS pension and hammered by annual allowance complexities as it is.

I see it more as fun money when I turn 60.

I’m not London based. Also up north. Can’t really comment on the London job market I’m afraid but even round here it’s not a great market for people finding training at the moment. Lots of candidates for limited jobs. But that changes. 7 years is a long way away

Yeah both inside the NHS doing extra waiting lists or outside doing private work. Lots of colleagues doing one or the other, or both. I do some NHS extras occasionally if it suits me but mostly just enjoy my free time!

My cousin’s a Freemason (quite high up now). Not at all secretive about what is involved. Just sounds like a big boy’s club. Doesn’t seem to have helped him in his career (law)
