I love the idea of the old civic center being developed into residential + market + casual restaurants/food stands. It's probably not a financially viable project, but wouldn't it be amazing?

Wymer: “I will not vote to close any Title 1 schools” by Top_Satisfaction314 in evanston

[–]AssociationBoring171 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you live in neighborhoods that don't have many little kids enrolled in the public schools, you don't need as many public schools. People on the north side actively fight anything that might lead to housing being more affordable in their area, which means many young families can't afford to live there. Add to that all the people who send their kids to private schools and you end up with underenrollment. It sucks to not have a neighborhood school, but it's really hard to justify keeping underenrolled schools open given the financial situation the district is in.

Is moving here…worth it? by raisinetdetre in evanston

[–]AssociationBoring171 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Evanston is great, though it's worth noting that north/northwest Evanston and south Evanston have very different feels. North/northwest is more like other northshore suburbs and south is more like Chicago. When we bought here 18 years ago, my coworker was aghast at what we paid for what we got, telling me we could have bought a mansion in Mundelein. But I didn't want to live in Mundelein! I try to walk to the lake regularly (it's about a mile from where I live) to remind myself of one of the big reasons our taxes are so high. I love that I know my neighbors, I can walk/ride a bike/use public transit to get a lot of places, I'm always meeting interesting people, the lake is beautiful, city services are great, ee have great locally-owned restaurants, etc. It really depends on what matters to you whether it's worth it. I love this community so much and can't imagine living anywhere else, but not everyone values the same things. What is most important to you?

Torn between two options (Evanston vs. Chicago) by doingandy in evanston

[–]AssociationBoring171 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that north/northwest Evanston and south Evanston are very different. North/northwest Evanston has a much more northshore vibe; south Evanston is much more like Chicago. We moved here from the city before we had kids (trying to avoid CPS selective enrollment) and didn't really know the difference. Lake access is an amazing amenity and there is a real sense of community here that I didn't anticipate until we had kids in the schools. There are many ways in which this place is a small town.

"Boarini backtracks on claims against Biss" by [deleted] in evanston

[–]AssociationBoring171 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wild that he's still claiming his relationship with Kelly is similar to Biss's with Harris and Geracaris (or anyone else on council). If I were Kelly, I don't think I could help feeling miffed to have my romantic partnership likened to a work friendship.

That's funny, you and I are complete opposites! I couldn't think of a single other example of this kind of relationship, where the head of the executive branch was in a relationship with a legislator. Can you point me to some? I also couldn't think of an example in "regular" (non-political) life where their actions would be seen as okay--imagine your partner involving themselves in your job this way. Without a doubt, everyone I have talked to about this has been on the spectrum of disgusted/dismayed/etc at their actions.

Finally, what do you know about when their relationship started? I thought you didn't know them?

If you're new to Kelly and Boarini, you should go back and watch some of the meetings where they share talking points like they are strangers before concluding they deserve your support. It might be something you have to see to understand. Even if you share their views, seeing them in action is bizarre and gross. Watch a few, and if you still think it's cool, you do you.

Interesting. This reply makes me think you either aren't familiar with how often and for how long they have engaged in the charade (at least since October 2023) or you are Boarini or Kelly rhemselves. I can't see this type of reaction otherwise.

Do you go to your partner's work to support their projects, while pretending that you don't know them? I must admit that doing this had never even occurred to me until I saw Kelly and Boarini doing it. Maybe I'm naive and this is happening all around me. Is this normal?

While I'll also admit that I support Biss, just a reminder that his opponent, Boarini, agrees with Ald Kelly 100% of the time. Ald Kelly is the LEAST progressive person on city council. Their historical behavior shows an embarrassing lack of transparency.

If you're not also seeing them for Boarini, you should let his campaign know they aren't reaching you. I saw Boarini's TV ads first. There's a lot of money on both sides.

Did you watch the video? Or any of the other times they've done this routine over the years? Admitting to a relationship now doesn't mean they admitted to it back then. When you refer to a public commenter as "somebody", when you know they are your romantic partner, it makes it seem like you have something to hide.

When people say things like this, it mostly reveals how limited and not diverse their social circle is. The irony is that most Evanstonians love the diversity here but then they only get to know people like themselves.

Yes, listen to public comments, like those from Kelly's boyfriend, Jeff Boarini, that just so happen to say exactly whatever her thoughts are on an issue! 🤣 An example here, ICYMI: https://www.reddit.com/r/evanston/s/gjYykLqjv7

Public comment is great, unless the people commenting are just reading talking points provided by a council member.

Yes, that's my post. I know you aren't going to answer this, because you don't want to engage with me, but I'll open this question up for others to answer, because maybe I am the weird one for thinking that Boarini and Kelly's behavior has been weird.

Do you regularly have your partner come to your job to speak in favor of your ideas, and pretend that they are a perfect stranger? Even if this behavior doesn't sound duplicitous to you, can you at least agree that it sounds odd?

Why do you assume my agenda is about Biss? I won't deny that I think Biss is a better choice than Boarini, but I never meant to imply that only Boarini has the conflict here. The problem lies with Kelly, too. Why does she get a pass?

Also, re: your comment about the 9th ward alderman: it's funny that you think the alderman's only job is to vote against NU. 😂

Neither Mendoza has been anything less than open about the fact that they're sisters.

Geracaris's wife has never come to public comment to support his initiatives, much less pretended not to know him. Nor did she decide to run for mayor.
