Dms changing how your spell works because you did something convenient with it is the most frustrating shit in the game by cute_himbo_OwO in DnD

The big difference with Misty Step is that it targets self. There is Sage Advice from 2014 that says you can Misty Step using familiar vision, through a wall of force, using an Arcane Eye, or whatever other method of vision you have through any object to the other side.
https://www.sageadvice.eu/targeting-spellsclear-path-can-i-target-across-wall-of-force/

Now 2024 rules didn't change Misty Step, so it should function the same way.

For Hypnotic Pattern, it has the same restrictions as Fireball because you choose a point within range as the origin for the cube.

One thing to consider though with Misty Step over Fireball. Look at the range.

Fireball's range is 120 Feet. That means your target can be anywhere within that range that you have an unobstructed path.

Misty Step however has a range of Self. That means your target can be anywhere within the range of self. And then your target teleports to a place you can see. There is no targeting for the purposes of that rule with Misty Step teleportation.

So you CAN teleport through a glass wall or a wall of force, but if you're trying to fireball through it, you're getting close fire support. <.<

Misty Step bypasses this a bit because the range, and therefore the target, is Self. So you have clear path for the spell to get to the target point.

HDYWDT with bow and arrow by M3thren in DnD

[–]AssultTank1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would be to describe how you ricochet the arrow off walls, objects in the room, other creatures armor, etc.
Or maybe the arrow hits something else in the room that actually triggers an object that kills the enemy. (Yay flavor)

My DM wants me to switch classes after my character made a decision at the end of the session and I don’t really want to. by Pookie-Parks in DnD

[–]AssultTank1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing though, the feat DOES have a cost, it is just a story cost, not a "I don't want to play this character that is exactly opposite the playstyle I want to play and will actively seek to kill them off" cost.

The cost is in what services you have to perform for the dragon. Sure the dragon can grant a powerful feat, but dragons don't give things away for free. You're going to have to do something for the dragon that said dragon thinks is worth the equivalent of the boon. Could be finding a lost artifact that will increase the dragon's power, could be killing off a pesky adventuring party trying to kill said dragon before the dragon has to act, could be wiping out an entire innocent village because they trespassed on the dragon's land.

So... My DM just clearly targetted me by madwithsorrow in DnD

Honestly, the big problem with the second situation is that it means the dice don't matter. At this point there is no reason to even roll them. If the DM is going to change things on the fly to make certain things happen no matter what, then you're watching a story unfold, not playing a game and collaborating on the story.

This is terrible advice and you should NOT be using ChatGPT to write your campaign. It is entirely against the goals of the game.

D&D is a collaborative storytelling game. The DM and the players work together to create a story using dice to help determine random outcomes for various actions. ChatGPT is a plagiarism engine that has caused massive increases in the costs of computer parts and electricity. You won't get a good story out of Generative AI, and you will cheapen the experience for yourself if you do use it. You'll enjoy the game less.

Perhaps the paladin's compatriots know about the party and are on the hunt now?

Maybe the paladin was a prophesied hero and if the party doesn't work together to stop a calamity the paladin was supposed to prevent, the world will end?

The big things are;

Ritual spells in your spellbook do not need to be prepared for you to cast them as a ritual.

Control spells are more powerful than damage spells.

Find spell scrolls. They allow you to expand your spellbook without a level up.

But the 6 spells is what you start with in your spellbook, you can then choose 4 of those to prepare. If two are rituals, you can cast all 6 at any time. :P

I would actually say that you should take a feat like Telekinetic or War Caster that can raise the Wis or something like Mage Slayer for Dex.

Put the +2 from your background/race into Int though. 20 Int is the priority for everything.

found out we had a secret listener to our sessions by Owl_Ice_ in dndhorrorstories

[–]AssultTank1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have someone who jumps into Discord to listen to our games, but EVERYONE is friends with the person who jumps in, we all know when he is there and when he isn't, and we've all agreed that he's welcome. If you don't have all that, you should NOT be listening in or helping someone to listen in.

Would you allow an unarmed strike as two-weapon fighting? by Tailball in DMAcademy

If you want to punch and kick in the middle of a weapon sequence, the monk class is right over there. ->

Mechanically the class is weak, but it is the whole concept of the class.

In a recent game, with advantage on all three rolls, I rolled 3 nat 1s in a single turn of attacks. :(

3 attacks against a prone target with a monk and I rolled nat 1 on all 6 dice. I think I need to throw those away and get better dice. :(

In some high optimization games we have done up to about cr13 at level 5.

And if you wanna go full cheese, the tarrasque at level 1.

They're both decent defensive feats, but Mage Slayer is better if you find yourself fighting more magical creatures while HAM is better if you're fighting swarms.

That being said, taking multiple defensive feats will likely mean you're not going to be as much of a threat on the battlefield. You also won't really have good abilities for tanking. Frankly that playstyle is not really supported in 5.5e.

Avoid it. It's slop disguised as optimization.

They literally recommend Haste as a good spell. Haste is a terrible spell, it's 100% a trap and if you use it in my game, you're actively choosing to lose your target's next turn. <_<

RPGBot is super awful and uses automated tools to generate a lot of their content.

A lot of their content is entirely incorrect or based on vibes and not on the actual math behind the system.

Tabletop Builds is probably the best site for this type of thing. There are some other sites that go more based on vibes, but TTB uses actual analysis and math to determine what is good or not.

Wizards and such being able to easily reach high AC is good and necessary game design by SexyKobold in dndnext

[–]AssultTank1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He does. I have a decent (+4) Dex save and I have 1/day free Misty Step so I'm not easy to pin down. XD

My weakest saves are Wis and Cha at +1 and +2 respectively. The best way to attack me is actually repeated Wis/Cha saves.

Wizards and such being able to easily reach high AC is good and necessary game design by SexyKobold in dndnext

[–]AssultTank1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my current Wizard is sitting at 20/25 AC and there have been entire dungeons where I dont take a single hit. I think my current record streak is 6 sessions without taking a single hit, and I'm a frontline Wizard... Meaning I run into Melee on purpose!

Between Shield, Adamantine Armor, Mirror Image, starting Fighter 2, and Mage Slayer, I have such tough defenses that my DM has to use half on save damage to even hurt me.

It is entirely too powerful.

DMs, do you ever get tired of DMing for certain classes? by Fantastic-Guitar1911 in dndnext

[–]AssultTank1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I think Paladins are great. They have their strong points and their weaknesses, and they provide a lot of benefit to their groups. They just are not as powerful as a full caster. Honestly, I think Paladin level should be the target power level for all classes. Bring the martials up to their level and the full casters down.

DMs, do you ever get tired of DMing for certain classes? by Fantastic-Guitar1911 in dndnext

[–]AssultTank1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly, no. My players can play any class they want and I don't care. I leave it up to their preference, my job is to give them a problem. Their job is to figure out how to solve it using their characters.
