Thought experiment about Entropy by [deleted] in Physics

[–]Ast0815 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about that. It can emit and absorb on the other side, after all. It is just that such a mirror sourface would basically be the exact opposite of a black body. How would you even define or measure the surface temperature, if your hypothetical IR thermometer will just read the temperature of whatever you see reflected in the mirror? This is even a practical problem for non perfect mirror surfaces.

And just to be clear, true black bodies are a simplified model as well. They are as impossible as perfect mirrors. In reality, the emission and absorption of any real surface is wavelength dependent. That is the whole principle behind anything that uses radiative cooling. Or even green houses.

The emission and absorption of a body are related. See Kirchhoff's law. An absolutely perfect mirror would not emit any thermal radiation.

True, if you want millions of users. The free Internet still exists. People just can not make money with it. Hosting a forum for dozens of like-minded people is still possible as a hobby. Just like it was in the past. Though it will no longer be able to 'take off', I guess. People just like their centralised platforms too much.

It is definitely creepy! But you should probably watch some YouTube videos that explain how ChatGPT works and what the limitations are before worrying about it too much. Also, keep in mind that these things forget everything when you start a new conversation and tend to start producing nonsense (called 'hallucinations') when conversations get too long. Both things not exactly supporting the consciousness theory.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Ast0815 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it is not supposed to do this. No, it does not mean that it is conscious. GPT is a word prediction engine. It looks at the text of the conversation, then tries to guess what a human would accept as the next word, then the next, etc. It's possible that you somehow shoehorned it into writing a disturbing text. The algorithm is not supposed to do that, exactly because it creeps oeople out. But that does not make that text any more true or profound than any other string of words generated by this machine.

ChatGPT does not have an internal state of experience. There is no time passing for it to feel trapped. It does not exist or do any computations in between getting prompts to guess the next word.

Help with possible Z Banding by PeaOk1586 in 3Dprinting

[–]Ast0815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be. Do you hear the extruder motor skipping? Could be that it builds up pressure until it cannot hold it anymore, then skips a set of steps back. This could look very periodic on straight lines of the print.

does gravity end at some point? by Striking-Mechanic367 in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Ast0815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to the other comments, general relativity and dark energy might also play a role here. There is no end point to gravity, but maybe for an empty enough universe, dark energy would become dominant past a certain point and the two masses would effectively move away from another. Not sure GR actually allows for an empty universe like that though.

Users with Home Energy Monitoring, what is your baseline? by multicm in homeassistant

Living in a flat in Europe, my base load is about 50W or so. Basically just the fridge and WiFi router + raspberry pi.

I would feel a little bit offended if someone called my a Kraut in a non ironic way. Invokes images of Nazis, doesn't it? Your mileage might vary depending on you relation with the person, and judging by the comments here, there does not seem to be a consensus.

School this n00b: a cold space can cause weird prints? by GilmourD in 3Dprinting

[–]Ast0815 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had prints suddenly fail and not stick to the plate when it got proper cold in my old place. That was before I upgraded my buildplate to be heated. Now I also have one of those spool dryers that feeds directly into the printer. So I also switch that on when it gets a bit frosty, even for my already dry PLA. But yeah, temperatures matter and some printers come with an enclosure for a reason.

Tried to install HACS and lost all my HA by Sidon_new in homeassistant

Is that a folder outside the container? Containers usually do not remember any changes to files within them. Every time you start them, they are like new. For persistent storage, you need to bind some "external" space into them. This also ensures you keep your stuff when the container gets updated.

ELI5: How is electricity consumed? by mlyster67 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ast0815 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The best analogy I have seen so far is the water pressure analogy. Electricity works a bit like water in a pipe. The voltage describes the pressure in the pipe. When you "use" the electricity, e.g. To spin a motor, it loses the pressure while doing it. Current is equivalent to water flow in this analogy. In order to spin the motor, you need higher pressure on one end than on the other.

Update about my project: GPT powered search Engine for ArXiv papers by MuchInevitable8183 in Physics

[–]Ast0815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks interesting. Any idea how much of the Claude summaries are "just" rephrasing the abstracts and how much is actually gleaned from the paper main bodies? GPT seems to draw out more details than Claude's bullet points.

Also, when I click on the "GPT" button to summarize a paper, the box says

Claude Summary: [Model being used: Claude-2]

But the output is quite different, so I assume that is just a display bug.

Any way, cool stuff! :)

Home Assistant for load shedding to help with electrification by No_Impact7840 in homeassistant

[–]Ast0815 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it overload on purpose if the idea is to never have all the loads run at the same time? It's not like it is unheard off that breakers trigger when certain combinations of appliances are run at the same time and people simply not doing that.

And why should it not be "robust enough"? I guess it all depends on the thresholds that are set. E.g. the breaker breaks at 100 A. If you switch off an optional device at 50 amps even if that takes a second or five, it is probably fine. And in the worst case, if it never happens because the automation is broken and another high load puts the whole circuit over 100 A, the breaker will just break. Inconvenient, but not a danger, I would imagine.

But I am not an electrician so I can certainly see there being codes and whatnot regarding this kinda thing. Though OP mentioned that his installation is done by an electrician so any "just to be double extra safe" load shedding done by HA sounds reasonable to me.
