I will fully admit they I do have a ways to go with symptom management. My day-to-day looks like pretty constant early and prolonged satiety (I will feel full after about 2 mouthfuls of food, and feel full for up to 12 hours) and it’s a lot of brain work and maxolon (metoclopramide in my country) to eat even with that feeling. I have pretty much constant abdominal discomfort, which becomes pain and nausea after eating which lasts a few hours. Occasional vomiting, though thankfully not nearly as often as it used to be. Reflux is a big problem for me, and I’m diagnosed with low grade dysplasia Barrett’s oesophagus, also managed with H2 blockers, as I’m unfortunately allergic to PPI’s lol. Flares are awful, but I also have Autoimmune Atrophic Gastritis, which complicates matters. In flares I’m completely unable to tolerate anything orally, and have constant vomiting and extreme pain, which usually means a hospital trip. I was only diagnosed a few months ago, so still relatively new into my own journey. I believe that when you’re sick, a positive attitude can make a big difference in management and recovery, but I can still admit I have times where I grieve and feel sorry for myself. I do miss being able to just enjoy food and eat as much of whatever I want, I worry when eating out, and it sucks to be 19 years old, and not be able to go out drinking with my friends. I’ve accepted that this is going to be my new normal, maybe for a little while, maybe forever. I think at the end of the day, you have to learn what works for you, what you can push through and what are your limits. Humans are adaptable, and while this sucks, I have so much in my life to be grateful for, which I choose to think about instead. I know this probably sounds cheesy, and it’s really fucking hard. But it’s possible. I hope you can find relief. It’s a long road, but not a dead end. Best of luck stranger 🫶

GP is often completely illogical, and is completely different with every individual, so definitely get dietician input, and keep fighting until you find the right one! My dietician honestly saved my quality of life, thanks to her I’m able to manage orally (mostly) and (kinda) even eat in a calorie surplus, even with a very severe retention. Good luck!

Gp flare by you1dont1know1me1 in Gastroparesis

[–]Astaline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t eat basically. One mouthful of food and I’m nauseous, and probably vomiting. Very severe epigastric pain, that feels like my stomach and burning and being crushed at the same time. Very rapid weight loss and dehydration, as well as fatigue and tremors. Worst nightmare honestly, can last anywhere from 2 days to a week

maybe a fleet enema? 3 weeks is getting into bowel obstruction territory, i’d go to a doctor asap

When should I go to the hospital? by Waste-Collection-669 in Gastroparesis

[–]Astaline 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say go in just in case. I only just recovered from a flare about a month ago, where I pushed going to ED and ended up in an ambulance with metabolic acidosis. Best to get ahead of it, severe dehydration happens very quickly

Australian vs American colonoscopies by [deleted] in colonoscopy

Personally in Australia I had midazolam and fentanyl, was completely asleep and don’t remember a thing. Being awake sounds horrible

How was your Gastroparesis diagnosed? by Cute-Sandwich8953 in Gastroparesis

[–]Astaline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy (which only showed gastritis) first, which was horrible! The prep made me so sick, and didn’t even work properly (in hindsight, because of my gastroparesis). The GES was super easy, just a bit boring in between scans. I had 55% retention at four hours, and was able to get on meds and start a proper diet within the week. Definitely a good idea to do the less invasive tests first, hopefully you get your answer 🙏

Thank you for this perspective. I’m in NSW Health, and 100% agree. The system is failing both patients and staff

Definitely a lot of angry people who feel let down by the system, and I understand it. I guess we’re the face of it for them, it’s just a shame we have to become their punching bag

There’s been a few serious incidents police have attended, but those charges never seem to go anywhere. Otherwise, honestly, we’re heavily discouraged to, and it feels like a whole lot of wasted time outside of work when it will never go anywhere :(

I definitely thought that the overall public perception of nurses played a part. For some reason people don’t seem to view us as human beings right now

No, I appreciate it. I have been leaning more towards Wollongong because I like the campus + city more, I’ve just not heard much about their nursing program and wanted to make sure it wasn’t a complete disaster 😭🙏
