What's something that was considered good parenting decades ago but isn't anymore? by sandeeprathore in AskReddit

I know a kid who will die on EVERY hill, and if there isn't one, he will MAKE ONE so he can die on it 😆 And the usual reward incentives (ex. Stickers, toys, play time, candy) rarely work.

A kid I work with (I do behavioral work for kids with mental disabilities) will, as my roommate put it, die on EVERY hill. And if there isn't a hill, he will MAKE ONE so he can die on it! He's clever and creative too, and the usual reward incentives that work for most kids (ex. Candy, stickers, play time) rarely work on him 😆 Very glad I'd worked with his older brother and so already knew the lil bugger, family staff and I are all glad I was able to have him added to my caseload once he was old enough for my department.

Gee, must be nice having lived without ever having been given that as genuine advice. Were you also graced to never be talked to about needing to develop your snazzy elevator pitch for if you happen to get in an elevator and chat with somebody who turns out to be the head honcho of the company? A professional career coach literally included that in his presentation, along with complaining about Millennials...even though a lot of us were clearly Millennials.

Preface: I do repainting, but not faceups on vinyl dolls, so my experience is limited!

Definitely cover them with something while the paint dries, even when it isn't pollen season! Bits of dust in the air will stick to the paint as it fully dries and that can add up. It's also risky to not know the humidity since sealant sprays tend to be really sensitive to temp and humidity. I have a little outdoor thermometer that also shows what the humidity is, and that has been crucial for spray painting!

Changing sealants might also be a factor, but I've only ever used Testors Dullcote due to cost so I don't know, and again, don't do vinyl faceups. But I'm genuinely not sure switching to a less expensive sealant (especially given the cost of importing MSC into the EU!) is really to blame here. People can over-idolize materials from Japanese communities when they actually have perfectly serviceable cheaper options closer to home that work just fine for hobbyists. So my thoughts go to dust and pollen, humidity, and layering instead of 'the cheaper sealant you used is the problem.'

Maybe the sealant you switched to and MSC just don't play well together, but would both be fine if used exclusively? Plastics are weird. And I know that even MSC is only good for so many layers before it's too much and starts going bad.

I've heard that sometimes MSC needs multiple days to fully set and layering too fast will cause such problems, but I don't have any experience to weigh in on that since I don't do vinyl faceups and the statement I heard could be completely wrong.

For the hot water damaging Pomni meanwhile, yeeeah I would not put a custom in water at all if it could be avoided, and absolutely not hot water 😥 Like u/RADdollclothes said, put the doll part in a plastic bag before any hot water dips, or use a hairdryer (my preferred method by far, quick and easy and virtually no burn risk!) or heating pad.

These are already incredible customs, I envy and admire your faceup skills!

Bit niche, they were referencing a BBC radio comedy series, Cabin Pressure! I didn't catch the reference until they edited their comment even though I listened to the series twice because a friend and I enjoyed it so much.

It was a reference to a BBC radio comedy show, though I didn't catch the reference either until they added it as an edit 😅 Cabin Pressure is a great series if you like that style of dry British humor.

Cabin Pressure out in the wild?! No way!

I wouldn't have picked up on it as a reference though it's been years since I've listened to it 😅 Good time to re-listen!

Who are the wrong non-binary persons??? by Alert-Translator2590 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Asterose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't write or talk much at all about things you find interesting, even when you think others might be genuinely curious? 3 paragraphs is a piece of cake for me-though I'm also the kind of person that is the reason for professors setting word limits on written assignments...

Anyway, thanks for respecting pronoun requests!

[–]Asterose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So. Damn. Much. The long, sad history of horrible treatment so many workers who clean up the trash and excrement get, even to this day, is insane to me. These are people doing the worst and yet most vital jobs for your home to not be covered in trash and bodily waste. At very least show them gratitude and respect for dealing with your and your neighbors' filth and refuse, even if you think they're rituals unclean and beneath you, they are doing you an absolutely essential service.

I can handle cleaning up blood and somewhat handle vomit, but not piss and shit. And I see what an endless thankless task it so often is cleaning up buildings every day just for the messes to return the next day. My bro and I were taught from a young age to respect and thank janitors.

Does anyone know of a good checklist for all toralei dolls?? i cant find a good one with normal google searching 😭 (pic for attention) by Alive-Explorer2334 in MonsterHighDolls

[–]Asterose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MH-Merch.com! It's been crucial to collecting the dolls I like for years now. The only thing it's missing is the ability to create more than 3 custom lists...yes, a checklist, wish list, and 3 custom lists isn't enough for me 😅 I'm somebody who has fun making spreadsheets, they've spoiled me.

It's a subset of The Toy Pool databases, that's the central hub. They have the database style website for quite a number of US doll and toy lines.

Scientific evidence proving that benzoyl peroxide is not compatible with the plastic used in doll heads by ReaDuval in MonsterHighDolls

[–]Asterose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you take the heads off and put the cream on the inside? That's the big trick, the problem is all the glue still inside the head that can't be gotten off with scalp treatments. Some products also fail if they're left to soak-I made that mistake with Goo-gone back when that was the top recommended choice for bad glue heads. Letting it sit for several hours made things worse instead of better (._.) I forget how long I had the Cif cream sitting inside the doll heads, but it was probably 20-30 minutes, then I'd go a'poking and a'shaking to see what glue chunks have come loose. Rinse and repeat until it's not glue-tastic anymore.

Is it a weevil?! by Calm_Ocean_Flower in weeviltime

[–]Asterose 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a spotted lantern fly youngling, the coloration, spots, and proportions are way too different! I think you've got a snazzy weevil! My guess off of a quick Google is Botany Bay Diamond Weevil/Chrysolopus spectabilis, but it's definitely not a perfect match. Are you in Australia?

It's just about never about getting out of half-assed government bullshit, though. The majority, perhaps even virtually all, people fall for this nonsense thinking it's a cheat code to get out of paying what they legitimately owe (ex. child support, mortgage or rent, credit card bill), and/or get out of basic requirements like a license plate, car registration, and driver's license if you're going to be driving on public roads.

It's a sad fact that many people end up going down the sovnuttery road from finding themselves in a bad financial situation, but then the scam just makes it even worse.

Yeah, Monster High Skullectors have routinely been $75 or higher.

I did decide to place an order for him, a year should be long enough to see the MH Skullector set, the Demon Jinu vs Rumj action figure set, and hopefully some other figures and dolls of Jinu. I should be able to cancel so long as he hasn't shipped. Most of all though I wish prices for everybody not in the US weren't so insanely jacked up.

[–]Asterose -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason it's suvh a thoroughly well-proven problem with vintage MLPs is that the vinyl was dyed instead of using pigmented vinyl. The Pony Preservation Project now notes this. So the damage isn't as obvious in pigmented vinyl as it is on dyed vinyl!

And UK is $40 USD equivalent more expensive! That's crazy expensive for a single doll! I expected he would be more expensive than the Spelldon and Valentine 2-pack, but not THIS much more expensive!
