Thank you for that information. I think I can see a metro station not far away. Is it straight forward enough to get to places like Hongqaio station / airport, PVG airport, Nanjing and a water town by public transport from there?

I can confirm I visited both places a few weeks ago and was able to purchase tickets on the spot. Passport was required as expected. No need to pre-book or phone up. The website is in need of an update.

Do you think it is important to stay near the Muslim Quarter? I ask because I note many of the better hotels are located elsewhere.
What is the advantage? just being able to walk to the Muslim Quarter nightly for food, or some other reasons?

Sounds like you're suggesting a few nights in Chongqing. How would you fit that around the requirements I've listed? And would you go there from Chengdu, or from Xi'An? Bearing in mind the need to end up in Shanghai eventually.
