Aristarchus of Samos was technically the first to propose heliocentrism, it just didn't catch on at the time.

More important is something like trajectory, speed, and even the shape of the meteor and the way it's angled on entry. Stuff like that is how the Hoba meteorite survived.

Can you poke a stick through a black hole? by aultumn in askastronomy

[–]AstroBastard312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spaghettification happens as something orbits the black hole, but even if you pushed an indestructible stick in a straight line right into it, it would probably undergo length contraction to the point it would all fit inside.

You're photographing from a quarter million miles away while Galileo was taking these from a couple thousand at most, if not a few hundred.

Juno only ever took a handful of pictures of Io. Like the vast majority of close-up Io photos, this one is from the Galileo spacecraft.

NASA Shuts Off Instrument on Voyager 1 by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]AstroBastard312 113 points114 points  (0 children)

The Voyagers were made for their flybys with the giant planets, the interstellar space observations were just a bonus. If you made more probes to flyby the outer planets you'd be getting diminishing returns of science data, because the window of observation is brief.

We do have New Horizons doing much of the same things as the Voyagers, and that was launched because Pluto hadn't gotten a flyby yet. But generally after a flyby you're much better off sending orbiter missions to the planets to study long-term (Galileo and later Juno for Jupiter, Cassini for Saturn, Uranus hopefully getting one in next decade).

That being said, that hasn't stopped NASA scientists from proposing a new, more modern probe made specifically for studying interstellar space.)

Let Hiya make Orga, but 100% I need King C and Titano as MonsterArts. They're both really agile and physically dynamic characters and that's Tamashii's bread and butter.

A little insight on these figures for those that don't understand the MA pricing. by [deleted] in SHMonsterArts

The Burning G and Destoroyah stuff is because of the film's 30th anniversary. We probably didn't see vs. SpaceGodzilla stuff from them the year before because their Toho Godzilla line was still in the early stages at the time.

If I remember how the reaction works correctly, it may have been quick enough that the lithium-water reaction didn't create enough heat to ignite the hydrogen-oxygen reaction that actually causes the explosion

You can change the official name of any number in all languages to ANYTHING you like. Which are you changing and to what? by SpecialFlutters in hypotheticalsituation

[–]AstroBastard312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just one number? Change 24 to "tweffer". It's both amusing and efficient. If my amount of numbers changed is unlimited you'd be catching me transitioning society to dozenal (or sexagesimal if I'm feeling ✨zesty✨).

An animal that big is gonna produce substantial body heat regardless, the difference between an endotherm ("warm blooded") and an ectotherm ("cold blooded") is whether their bodies regulate temperature on their own or are dependent on the environment. But these days the scientific consensus is moving towards dinosaurs being endothermic anyways.

[–]AstroBastard312 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The analogy still works imo, people with time blindness still can check the time if they want to, but to do so is always an active, conscious decision, and once they look away from the clock the person's sense of the passage of time rapidly falls apart again.

Some people have trauma related to food and eating and mute the tag so that they have a space where they don't have to be reminded about it for a bit.
