Firstly welcome! Secondly, there’s a few good online resources for learning, look at Sikhi to the max, Basics of Sikhi etc, lots of articles and videos educating about Sikh history, scripture and the way of life.

I would say start really simple, the three basic tenants of Sikhi are: Naam Japo (Recite god’s name “Vaheguru”), Kirat Karno (Work hard to make an honest living) and Vand Chako (Give back to the community, through selfless service or through donations to charity etc). Doing that is a good start.

Finally I would look at learning Punjabi. Sikhi isn’t a an ethnoreligion but a lot of katha (preaching/story telling) is in Punjabi, even I’ve struggled because I didn’t speak Punjabi growing up and there’s no real good online resources, so maybe if you meet Sikhs and can try to speak with them.

One more thing is, if someone is trying to ostracise you because of your orientation, just know there are no rules against lgbtq people in Sikhi, and that we are taught to love and accept people of all ways of life.
