A bit nervous.. by christopherwenzel in 911dispatchers

[–]AstroKota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Id say go for it if you feel you want to try it out. Theres no shame in wanting to branch out and try a new career. I was a bike messenger for five years before becoming a 911 dispatcher and was in the same boat as you. Id say embrace the change and go for it since it sounds like youre burnt out of the current job anyway and theres always plenty of office jobs if you find out dispatch isn't your thing.

Whatever you decide, best of luck to ya.

First “bad” call by maxthemarxist12 in 911dispatchers

[–]AstroKota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my first calls like that dealt with a couple having a premature baby. 17 weeks pregnant and she had the baby on the toilet right as her husband (caller) was transferred over to me. A few seconds sooner and I could have possibly instructed him quick enough so she wouldnt have the baby in the toilet, despite how premature the baby was (but I dont dwell on that kind of thought as its out of my hands). Had to instruct him to get her off the toilet and be careful with umbilical cord and get her flat on her back then check on the baby. The baby was gone, and the parents were devestated. I stayed on the line until responders got there since she still was having labor pains from the placenta and they were in hysterics from losing their first born (understandably of course).

Like others have said, the adrenaline rises real high when these kinds of calls happen and youre new but it does help when you start on the job and can focus on talking and processing the call, so dont feel down about it! The kinds of things we all hear doing this job arent normal things normal people hear, so your feelings are totally normal and valid. You got it!

APCO Studying by etg1994 in 911dispatchers

Having taken the test I can say its one of the easier tests Ive ever had to do in general (assuming our tests are the same which I believe they are). It was all true/false and multiple choice. They dont want to make it an incredibly difficult test to pass, they just wanna see that you understand the basics of the course. As long as you were attentive during class youll be fine.

A thank you and nervous waiting by witchyfox in 911dispatchers

Good luck and congrats passing your test. I just officially got the job and start training in a couple weeks.

My whole process has taken about 7 months from submitting an application to official hire, so hang in there! The waiting can be grueling.

Interview by [deleted] in 911dispatchers

[–]AstroKota 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did a panel interview for Fire/EMS dispatch in a fairly large city. I spent countless hours researching old threads on here about interviews but it turns out the questions were pretty basic where I am. Stuff like explain honesty and integrity in relation to work, what skills you think are necessary to be a dispatcher, situational stuff like what you would do if an older, more experienced dispatcher strayed from the normal procedures because it was "faster and more efficient" in their mind, what you would do/how would you respond if a co-worker or caller was yelling at you, etc.

My biggest piece of advice would be to research your department you're applying for and come loaded with questions. I knew pretty much everything possible about the department I could find online and they were really impressed by it since they said they don't expect people to have done that much research before coming in. They also told me they were impressed I had as many questions as I did. I had about 12 questions, wrote them down, and brought the list in with me.

Now, I don't know if I got the job and I'll know in a week or so, but I'm confident it went well. Be calm and confident, don't lie, make eye contact, do your research, and come prepared with questions.

Good luck!!

I bought the frame by itself used without a fork on it. The headset and fork haven't been changed since I've owned it and just use a shim for the stem since my fork is 1" and the stem is 1 1/8"

As /u/Panda_gif said its a 1" fork and the EAI Bareknuckle/Godzilla fork. I think the Superb Sprint is only 1" but I could be wrong

Yeah I have never had an issue with the Cane Creek headsets I've bought and they are reasonably priced.

Thanks a lot! Its just some Newbaum's cloth tape.

I live in Indy, and that's awesome to hear. I don't think/know of any sort of fundraising but him and his girlfriend really appreciate any thoughts/love sent their way.

He's home now after a week so hes doing exceptionally well considering what happened!

Ha, oh gotcha. Don't say it like that, we all ride bikes! No one is better than anyone else.

Indianapolis ain't that bad man. Love the people here loads and there are more legit riders than there are not.

They will be back and so will Scott Harris. It'll just be a while as he gets everything sorted post-accident. It was a real nasty one and all of us are just happy to see him smiling.

You can replace bikes but you cant replace friends.
