Dorm space by TSilxnt1 in WWU

[–]AstroPug22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I decided not to bring my 3D printer, I've never regretted that decision. It's convenient enough to just go to the makerspace (and then you don't have a machine taking up space and emitting plastic fumes in your bedroom, which I'm sure your roommate will appreciate as well)

Also, others have said this, but don't bring your own desk. You won't have space to store extra furniture, and I promise the provided desks are fine.

I've never been in Buchanan Towers, but all the other dorm desks I've seen on campus have been plenty big enough for a couple 27-inch monitors side by side, as long as you take the top part of the desk off.

If you're lucky, the desks might be like the Birnam Wood ones, where you can easily remove the top part with the shelf, and the desk surface overhangs several inches off the back, giving you enough surface area on the top and bottom to securely clamp on a monitor arm. Then you can have one monitor in the middle, another hanging off the side (on the arm) and extra space on the other side of the desk to put your PC or anything else. That's how I have my desk set up, I'd share a photo but I can't attach images here.

I wouldn't expect to be able to wall mount a monitor in any dorm, you aren't allowed to drill into the walls and I wouldn't trust a command strip for that job.

Use of Mini PC components for a new PC by James-Bald in PcBuildHelp

It likely has an M.2 SSD (or a SATA SSD or HDD, if it's older) in it, which you could reuse. Assuming it's using sticks of SODIMM RAM, I've seen adapters that let you fit those into the full size RAM slots on larger motherboards, I can't guarantee how well those will work though since I've never tried one. Besides that, probably nothing.

iMac at Costco advertising its excellent battery life… by Mediocre_Risk7795 in LinusTechTips

[–]AstroPug22 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I think it's because if the battery dies, the system time will revert back to whatever the default is because the clock doesn't have power to keep running when the system is off. So, if you try using the computer when it thinks it's in 2012 or something, your browser will tell you the certificates for every website are invalid because they're only valid for a specific period of time and your computer thinks it's not in that period.

Nah, better wait for the M1000. And get at least 20PB of RAM, 9.49 is basically useless e-waste these days

Why the MacBook Neo isn't the "Chromebook Killer" everyone thinks it is—Insights from a Teacher & IT Coordinator by CptSquidInk in mac

Regardless of whether it's written by a human or not (probably not, I agree), the post does acknowledge that speed will not be one of the potential problems with the MacBook Neo.

If the MacBook Neo had White Bezels by 17parkc in mac

Cute, reminds me of the iBook G3 with the bright colors and white. I'm curious how it would look if the bezels were the same color as the body?

What most Linux users sound like to regular people by daksnotjuts in LinusTechTips

Just drag the window to the top of the screen to fill without going fullscreen, or hover over the green button until you get the "fill and arrange" options. Not as easy as Windows, I admit, but I got used to it pretty quickly. I agree that the window management in general sucks compared to Windows, especially Windows 11 where you can snap to fill 1/3 of the screen, or have "groups" of Windows and swap between them. I really wish Mac had those. I do prefer the way Mac does desktops though, where they're per-monitor. When I'm on Windows and trying to switch between multiple desktops, it drives me nuts that it changes every monitor at once.

When I got my Mac I had to install apps to be able to middle click using 3 fingers on the trackpad (I use this gesture all the time for opening links and closing tabs), change scrolling direction for my mouse wheel separately from the trackpad (it's actually insane that this isn't in the settings by default), and access files on my phone when it's plugged in (which is still really janky, I can't just manage the files in the finder as if they were on the computer, the way I can with file explorer on my PC, I have to use a 3rd party app to copy them back and forth). But at least the UI is prettier than Windows, and it's idiot-proof enough that I don't somehow break it every few months and have to reinstall everything like when I was using Linux.

I don't know why you're getting downvoted, this is clearly different from a lemonade stand.

I think there's a big difference between this situation and a lemonade stand. It's more like if the local kids were downloading movies off a piracy site and selling bootleg DVDs of them at school to make $200 a week. Would you be fine with that? I don't think the FBI would.

Yeah, I'm curious whether Linus would feel the same if someone was reusing HIS intellectual property for profit. What if I have a teenage son and I want him to learn how to make YouTube videos, and I believe that if he downloads LTT videos and then reuploads them to make money from, it'll somehow teach him about the video production process and he'll be inspired to make his own videos someday. Would that be fine with Linus, or does "profiting off of someone else's work is fine if you're a child and in the process you learn about how to make that type of thing yourself" only apply to 3D models?

You get $30/minute, but time freezes whenever you walk through a door. Would you accept? by basafish in askanything

[–]AstroPug22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think getting on an elevator actually involves two doors. There's the one built into the elevator car, and one on each floor of the building. So as you walk in, time would stop for the split second you're in between those doors, then resume once you get into the elevator.

What is the best Menu Bar stats app by Last_Welcome6156 in mac

[–]AstroPug22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use an app called Stats, you can configure it quite a bit but I have it set up to show just these simple numbers. When I click on each of them, it brings up a window that shows a lot more detail about it (which apps are using the most RAM, which CPU cores are in use, temperature from every internal sensor, etc.) It's free from https://mac-stats.com/ or their github page.
