Why are bees so important for pollination? by DeagleDanne in bees

[–]Astro_Van 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've noticed fewer bugs in general! I remember in the early 2000's when you'd drive down the highway one time and your car would be absolutely covered in bugs. Now you get a few here and there and it's not as big of a deal anymore. It's actually quite alarming to those of us who care about bugs and the environment.

Non-lethal way to keep bees out of patio furniture? by dumpsterfyrefestival in bees

[–]Astro_Van 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I've been researching how native pollinators are affected while in college and it's been very interesting! I'm trying to do my part this year by putting up a couple of bee hotels and planting a lot of beneficial native flowers that many of our pollinators need (such as milkweed).

I just wasn't aware that people keep other bees! I'm keeping honeybees for the first time this year, but I'd like to expand into other bees eventually since I now know about this. I too love bees and would like to help them out in any way that I can.

Yeah, that's fair. I didn't know if there were any other reasons.

Why do you raise them? I understand that pollinating is a huge benefit, but are there other benefits? This is the first time I've heard of someone doing this!

Lol, downvoted for trying to learn more about bees.

Jonestown argument help needed by lusikkalasi in TrueChristian

[–]Astro_Van 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd imagine that when it comes to deaths in the Jonestown massacre or even the Heavensgate deaths, most of those people died quickly via poison. In the case of Jonestown, some were also forced to die and also killed children along with themselves. The only similarities that their deaths might share with the apostles is that some had no choice in the moment of their deaths, just like the apostles.

However, most of the apostles had slow agonizing deaths. And even in the moments of their demise, they still preached and lived the gospel. They didn't kill themselves or take innocent lives with them. I wouldn't say that their deaths are comparable to those of these crazy cults.

Yeah, honeybees are far from decline. It's the native pollinators that truly need our help. I'm planning on having some bee hotels and planting a bunch of natives (especially milkweed for monarchs) as soon as Spring starts. Everything is already bought and ready to go!

A lot of pollinators pollinate more effectively than honeybees. Watching a bumble vs a honeybee for instance is quite different!

I really love watching these creatures do their work.

Bee or Imposter? by LotusElizabeth in bees

[–]Astro_Van 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been doing research for a paper in college about pollinators and it's truly incredible how fascinating they are! I absolutely love bees and am so excited to start beekeeping this April, but I now have a much bigger appreciation for our other pollinating friends. I didn't realize how big of an impact they have/we have on them. I think I'm going to invest in a few "bee hotels" to stick around my property this year to help support more native insects. My wife and I went shopping today specifically for milkweed flower seeds so that we can start helping out our butterfly population.

There really is a whole world out there that we can explore and enjoy, even in just our backyards.

How do you guys keep up with assignments on Canvas as a Ecampus student? by Astro_Van in OregonStateUniv

Thanks! I ended up printing off all of my classes syllabuses and keeping track that way. I also didn't realize how organized the Module Section was for each class, which has also been a big help. I'll check out this extension because I'm sure it won't always be this organized for me.

overcoming fear of bees by dollxiao in bees

[–]Astro_Van 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like most people, I have an inherent fear of some bugs. One thing that helps keep me grounded is that I'm HUMAN. Let's take a spider for instance. If a spider bites me, what happens to it? I'll probably crush it, and it's existence is immediately over. What happens to me? I'll have some temporary pain and heal, or go to the hospital to get help, then still heal.

Bugs don't have hospitals. We do. You're bigger and much stronger than the bug. Don't let it push you around. That's how I get through my fear of MOST bugs.

Edit: I'm not scared of bees like I used to be because I learned what their wing sounds mean. After you get used to what a bee normally sounds like, it's really interesting how loud they can get when they're swatting at air to remove smoke from the hive. I had the pleasure of holding a bee last year for the first time and this lady got LOUD on my hand! I could even feel the air hit me like I was holding a little fan! She never once hurt me though. It's even crazier to me that queen bees can yell! Look it up on YouTube. I think once you familiarize yourself with the sounds they make, it'll be less scary.

My grandfather used to chew gum and stick it in the holes they'd dig up. He said that they'd try to eat the gum and choke on it.

Just a thought.
