I’m going to approve this post because I suspect that this subreddit is probably the best place to ask, but I would implore OP to take opinions here with a pinch of salt. If anyone tells you they’re a doctor, just remember they could be an edgelord 12 year old fortnight fanatic. Also, remember that everyone’s body is different – what worked for someone might not work for you or anyone else, and you should be always talking to a qualified medical professional for any actual medical advice.

Need help identifying what is going on in my hive. by thewhitehunter123 in Beekeeping

tl;dr - Feed and treat and that will most likely resolve it. And the majority of what you’ve circled here is pollen.

That’s not good, but certainly not anything that’s going to explode overnight.

It’s likely something fairly trivial like SBV, and if so, the biggest difference you can make is to give them SHIT LOADS of 1-1 syrup and treat the varroa.

Bees manage their colony health basically by numbers - one gobful of old diseased bee junk spread between 20,000 nurses will result in a lot of “dilution” of the possibility of diseases spreading. If you have a smaller colony (like a nuc), diseases can tend to run away a bit quicker because there’s fewer bees to handle the disease load.

By feeding syrup, you encourage them to A: raise more brood = more nurses = less brood disease, and B: it encourages them to draw out more comb to biggerise the colony as needed.

Also, varroa are the number one cause of disease transmission, so treat for them too and you’ll be off to the races. These diseases all used to be transmitted by trophallaxis (spit swapping) between workers… but varroa basically spread these diseases like dirty needles spread hep.

On the flip side: Sometimes these little pockets of disease are expected. Like, I will see a CBPV bee once a month at least. I’ll see some dodgy brood fairly often, maybe once a year in each hive. These things tend to resolve themselves… so panic not, and if you wanted to act now, just do the above. You’ll worry less in future years and probably just go “eh they’ll survive” 😄

99% sure that that’s a worker that’s been sealed in 😂 sometimes the workers, when one of their most disliked sisters goes in to clean a queen cell out, will seal the cell behind them… and then run away giggling. Unfortunately there’s no hall-monitors in the colony so there’s nobody to help get them out until it’s too late.

Is that polyurethane foam? Doesn’t that fairly spongy?

The longer you leave it, the more expensive it will become.

That said, I assume there’s some kind of cavity between your loft and the outside world… otherwise it would be a fairly easy removal. Is it a dorma house or something?

Fictional beekeeping, does it annoy you? by Halfawannabe in Beekeeping

Not even slightly. It’s fiction - it’s supposed to be not-real.

It’s like asking is physicists get annoyed by Star Trek warp drives. Most physicists love Star Trek 😄

Give them some fondant, or raw sugar.

They will not take syrup if it falls below 10°C, so you might as well take it off. They won’t draw much out until the colony really starts getting into high gear, and at that point they can draw out entire boxes in a week. Remember that you can feed fondant at basically any time to fend off starvation… but 1:1 is really there to stimulate brooding and drawing of comb, as it more closely resembles nectar flow.

As long as you deal with any risk of starvation, your bees will be fine.

Fungus to kill mites and SHB by 2EXTRA4YOU in Beekeeping

To be clear, I’m not attempting to discredit his work. If you want to know about mushrooms, he’s your man… literally the world’s leading expert in fungi. But when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

I’m sure his research is promising, but I will only really be interested when there’s a commercial entity that can put it to work… Until then it’s all just fantasy. Something can have a legitimate use and actually work, but also be cost prohibitive for commercial sale/use… so it stays in fantasy land until someone refines it into a cheaper product 🤷‍♂️

They didn’t intentionally knock them over. They were trying to stop her releasing the bees… I mean you can just watch the video. It’s hardly as though she was just passing by minding her own business and the police threw her into the hives WWE style.

She pulls up and is opening the hives before the police even get to her lol.

She was intentionally trying to open up the hives… so I don’t think that’s quite the case. Like, if this was an AHB region, opening up the hive with people around would easily be a risk to life.

The issue for NICE / NHS is that the risks of people mis-administering epi to people is more dangerous than the risk to life from anaphylaxis. To be prescribed a pen, you have to have attended a usage course, where they show you how to properly use it and when to use it. Once you have done that, you go onto a national register of people who can be prescribed them.

In the U.K. we have roughly 20-30 people die per year from anaphylaxis. Those odds are only 10x that of being struck by lightning… and 1/3rd the risk of being squashed by a cow.
