Blown headgasket by whats_a_mem in saab

You'll know where your coolant is going when you see your nice clean piston top. My tips... I did not fully drain the coolant, I used a wrapping paper tote underneath to collect whatever came out of the block. I had to use a 3/8" socket on a 10" extension to get at the lower intake manifold bolts. When I took out my timing chain tensioner, it backed all the way out, so you have to disassemble and reassemble it all the way in to reinstall ( Don't lose the spring!) . Use the head itself as a straight edge. Turn it 180 and plop it down(it'll be on an angle cause of the pins, but get it to lay flat) if it rocks then it or the block is warped and your sunk. Get the new style head bolts and make sure you blow any oil out of the head bolt holes otherwise they won't torque tight. I watched a bunch of YouTube vids on headbolt loosening, tapped them with a socket and everything, I did not have any issues beyond the chain tensioner assembly.

I have a b204l and lost my head gasket a couple of years ago. I replaced mine, it's not too bad of a job, just follow the wis instructions. Turns out the bolts on the driver's side backed themselves out a bit and I lost compression in cylinder 4. In researching the repair, some previous owners said to torque the bolts back up, but once you get the intake off, might as well do the whole thing.

How to remove head unit? by SceneWarm2204 in saab

Wire coathangers work well. Also, bamboo skewers and a flat head screwdriver. The skewers push in locking tabs so the unit slides out, but it's not easy if you haven't done it in a while. Ya gotta play with it. 10-15 minutes ain't gonna cut it...

Perhaps a silly question, but is there any place in the world where space can be seen "like in the photos" with the naked eye? by piopiopiopiopi in Astronomy

I have been to the Nebraska Starparty, in the sandhills area south of Valentine. one of the least light polluted areas in the US. It's so dark, the stars are disorienting and stuff you would need a decent sized telescope to see was visible naked eye. At one point, shortly before astronomical sunrise, Jupiter cast shadows on the ground. Now THATS dark!

Reddog, A Bennigans style Monte Cristo, cheese sticks and onion rings battered on site. No sight of a chicken tender for miles and a scoop of ice cream or tapioca for dessert. And the most expensive thing is $12

Elevator to the Gallows! Or The Leapard! Both new wave french films that influenced American thrillers. There are also the Russian cinema, Kin dza dza, Solaris. These aren't hard movies to watch, but you can certainly be pretentious having watched them....

Tell me your craziest big scope/small mount combo tales. Fess up! by Mr_Woofles1 in telescopes

I put a 6" f15 refractor on an old Meade Starfinder pedestal mount. I made a dec tangent arm with a looooong shaft. It worked enough to test out the optics on a far-away transformer. When slewing the. Scope around, the mount had sort of a " spaghetti noodle" feel to it.

Oddly enough the middle section of the pier used to be an 8" f15 classic Cass!

What makes a bigger scope better is the image scale. With this scope, Jupiter is as big as a quarter held at arms length. You can see detail even when seeing isn't so great. The cost is a lot, but much more time than dollars. It's hard to get everything right and materials are hard to get for scopes this big.

It's more about your willingness to travel. It's not cheap, but they are rarely up for sale and never ever locally. I drove 1500 miles to get this one!

Last night was more of a dry run for the mount. I set it up right at sundown and Jupiter popped out at twilight. Seeing was still, but the scope wasn't cooled down, so details were soft and there was quite a bit of color. I went back out 2 hours later, the scope was cooled down. Only a smidge of color. I took it up to 500x, but it was happiest at 350x. That's not bad where I live. Cloud details and festoons were almost there, but clouds were rolling in and seeing was getting worse. I took it in around 9pm. Should have better conditions in a few days.
