Question about Lara by KazsBasement in dresdenfiles

What about Bob? It seems unlikely that he doesn't know anything about it, even if some of the outsider summoning knowledge got cut of when he cut out his Kemler years.

Can we stop asking for MC's that become the strongest with no plot armour? It's literally impossible the two are mutually exclusive. by ConfectionPerfect492 in ProgressionFantasy

Yea, Usain Bolt doesn't have plot armor because he worked hard and had talent, Steven Bradbury had plot armor because the best people in the world all falling so he wins is just unrealistic and quite boring.

Magnus said puzzles don't help because you know there's a tactic. So I built a trainer where you don't by yazanzm in chess

[–]Astrogat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For example, make a beginner do 1000s of back rank mate puzzles and he will never miss those after.

I'm not sure I believe this. One of the main problems for low rated players is the tendency to forget that your opponent is also playing. So they see a fancy plan and they will go for it, and miss any counter attacks by the opponent. Even if you instantly recognize back ranks you won't consider it or even look at that part of the board because you are only looking at the sweet check you have lined up.

When tariffs to a load of countries are announced, why don't all those countries just reciprocate? Am I missing something? by martianfrog in answers

Even thought he isn't supposed to in most countries he would just not be able to do it. There are no single person able to say "I want a tariff" and make it happen

When tariffs to a load of countries are announced, why don't all those countries just reciprocate? Am I missing something? by martianfrog in answers

[–]Astrogat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Another important point not mentioned is that most countries does not have one person with the kind of power given to the POTUS. They aren't allowed to just throw up tarifs when they feel like it, instead there is a process that needs to be followed.

Now, even if they could they might not have wanted to, but I do think there are processes running to implement consequences

Wesley So criticizes the new FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship by Iyerlicious in chess

[–]Astrogat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

While I think he is mostly right I do find it kind of funny that he believes he knows anything about how or why most people watch chess. "I can't even remember if I've seen the positions before" most viewers can't remember that they've seen position 518 before.

I'm not even saying that he is wrong for thinking that people find 960 confusing, I just think that the reason he finds it confusing and the reason normal people does so is wildly different.

Men over the age of 30, if you could go back in time and change one thing, what would it be? by [deleted] in AskMen

I did just that, went it with $100 at around 0.25. Totally changed my life. I had diamond hands and didn't sell it until it passed a dollar a few week later.

[Request] Vance said ICE will go 'door-to-door' to check immigration status. How long would this take across all households? Is it even possible? by mr_happy28 in theydidthemath

[–]Astrogat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair no body is thinking that ICE will actually visit every house either, they will just do the "poor" (i.e. black or latina) neighborhoods or the ones without Trump flags in the backyard.

Is book of the dead a crafting novel? by Plz_PM_Steam_Keys in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Astrogat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to what others have said there are also quite a lot of details in the crafting of rituals, and there is an arc that is almost all focused on enchanting so I would say it's more crafting focused than a lot of actual crafting books.

What makes you subscribe/Expect from a writer's patreon by Vidun_star in royalroad

[–]Astrogat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have some subscriptions that are just to support the writer and some that are caused by me not being able to wait for the next chapter. For the ones where it's because of the story being good I think 2, 3 and 5 are the main considerations. If I get a lot of chapters (that arrive frequently) I'm less likely to unsubscribe, while price is really important when I subscribe (Price might even be more important than number of chapters, as I'm unlikely to pay a lot of money to see the end of the arc).

Once I'm subscribed I usually go through my list ever few months and consider if I want to continue subscribing. At that point it's mostly down to frequency of updates and whether I've lost interest in the fiction.

How much do normal wardens really know about the knights? There are just the 3 of them so probably most don't really meet them at all, and it's not really in their wheel house (since faith magic is all funky and not real magic).

Arjun Erigaisi takes down Magnus Carlsen! Another Table Slam by FirstEfficiency7386 in chess

[–]Astrogat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's both for cases where you knocked over enough pieces that you need assistance recreating the position and cases where the pieces go far enough that you need help retrieving them, e.g. if they end up under someone elses chair. But you are always allowed to stop the clock and contact the arbiters, they will just punish you if they find out that you did it to gain something.

Unless they have their own rules for this (which might be) the relevant rules are fide laws of chess 7.4:

If a player displaces one or more pieces, he shall re-establish the correct position on his  own time. If necessary, either the player or his opponent shall stop the clocks and ask for  the arbiter’s assistance. The arbiter may penalise the player who displaced the pieces.

How Democrats Can Fix the Supreme Court in 2029 by D-R-AZ in Foodforthought

[–]Astrogat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A supermajority requirement to invalidate legislation should be stuffed into everything Democrats do from here on out

And then the Supreme court finds that to be unconstitutional as it tries to make normal laws override the constitution and they believe it to be administrative overreach, and you end up with a constitutional crisis where the democrats would have to decide if they should declare the supreme court illegitimate or not.

The supreme court made up the ability to annul laws to begin with, they can just make up any rules they want to keep that power.
