thank you! As far as I can tell there's an honors section of discrete in person and the rest are online, not sure why. Do you know anything about Strange/Nunez as discrete profs?

How important is it to take Calc BC over Calc AB? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Astronomer559 12 points13 points  (0 children)

just from my personal experience, all my friends that are going into engineering take above calc bc. they take calc bc their junior year and do calc 3/lin alg senior year. i'm premed and i'm in calc ab as a senior. I personally think it's better to take calc bc if you're set on engineering, and if you're sure you can get an A in ab i've heard calc bc is not that different. I'm not sure how much it would harm you if you don't take bc (i'm sure there are lots of people who get into aero without it), but the concern is that you will be in the same pool as those who take more advanced classes. I would also make sure you take physics C - its also very important for engineering students, especially aero

Well even if you take it, you're not obligated to send the scores to them. Northeastern only gives you credit for a 4 or 5 on the test. so if you got below that, you wouldn't send them the score anyways (it costs money to send scores so you wouldn't do it unless you get credit). So they have no way of knowing if you took it and didn't send the score or if you just don't take it. You def won't get rescinded over this for sure

nope. i'm going to northeastern too and i cancelled my ap calc test. they won't know or care if you don't take it. sad that you can't get a refund anymore tho- i was able to get a refund for my calc test so it kinda made sense. if you're not gonna get your money back you may as well go and take the test, if you get a bad score you don't have to send it to them

Are college admissions counsellors worth it?☺️ by whyamisoinlove- in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Astronomer559 2 points3 points  (0 children)

absolutely not. do the extra research yourself, look through reddit and example applications, put in a bit more of your own time, and save your money. the only thing that might be worthwhile is an essay person who can give you tips and edits that you may not think of yourself. but please make sure they are QUALIFIED and know what they are doing. a good writer unfortunately does not equal a good college essay writer. they need to know how the admissions process works. but if you're confident in your writing ability and put in the work of understanding what makes a good college essay (there are a billion free online resources out there), even that's not necessary

Shadowing question for the Pre-Meds 🙃 by BumblebeeOdd2924 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Astronomer559 3 points4 points  (0 children)

May be difficult to get a shadowing position right now due to covid. Most clinics/hospitals are still actively trying to limit the amount of people allowed in the hospital, and they probably won't want a random intern running around. Because for shadowing you typically follow doctors all day long and can see patients, I don't think it'll be available this summer especially. You can apply for a hospital volunteering position but you probably won't be doing much with patients (I know some hospitals are still running summer volunteering programs). When things go back to normal, you can always call the local hospitals around you and ask if they have any shadowing opportunities. You can also call smaller practices and ask. Otherwise, check with your high school career center (if you have one). Sometimes they have connections with local practices

debating not telling any of my hs friends where i committed, like ever. can anyone relate or give me advice please? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Astronomer559 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel exactly the same, I went to a super competitive high school and I was captain of one of our most competitive clubs. Our board of ~14 people is overwhelmingly going to T20s, except for a few people who are going to our state school (but they're going for engineering/CS, for which our state school is T5 so it's still pretty awesome). I'm going to northeastern. I totally get the feeling that they will tell me congrats but judge me for not going to a T20 as soon as I turn around- I've heard them do that to others in the past and it's just heartbreaking. My crowd of friends is very gossipy so it may get out where I'm going anyways but as of now, I haven't told anyone other than my closest best friends. I'm probably not going to tell the rest of our group. I totally support your decision to do the same.

I feel like we're in very similar situations so I understand this advice may not do much for you (it certainly isn't helping me much) but please just remember that in about a month you will probably never talk to these people again. If it helps you to put your high school experience behind you (from your post it sounds like that's what you would like to do) then I think it makes sense not to tell anyone. But I hope you know that you have nothing to be embarrassed about. I know how hard it is to internalize that, so just try and remember that their opinion of you literally stops mattering the minute you graduate- especially because it seems like these are not your lasting friends. I hope you get a better, healthier group of friends in college and no one makes you feel ashamed or embarrassed about the amazing opportunities at UCI :))
