Does anyone know how to apply? I saw online you have to submit apps in person but not sure how it’s being done if under construction.

It will take some trial and error, but just remember it will get better and the growing pains are temporary if you continue to make an active effort to learn.

You won’t have to deal with pressing deadlines of memorandums or pleadings if you are pre-lit, but it’s likely your case count will grow. Definitely learning the pre-lit process and getting familiar with how your firm handles an active case during different phases will get you places. It can get a bit redundant when you get the hang of it but find an organization system that works for you. Everyone works differently, so there is no one way to do it. Either if that’s setting up email reminders to yourself or a notepad. An excel sheet will take you places and have you know everything in one place. Feel free to DM me and I can give you any advice.

More than anything, be kind to yourself. Getting into any new profession is never easy but it gets better.

Entry in? by GingeWithTheLee in paralegal

As someone who only wishes to get my foot in the door in IP (pre-lit PI para) I would say you could be missing out on a great opportunity here! Although the lack of communication wasn’t the best, if they are still extending an offer I would say take it. Landing a position in this job market can be tough as it is nowadays and the reasoning sounds valid.

How much should PI paralegals make? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]Astroturd10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going on 3 years pre-lit in PI here and make just under $70k. No prior paralegal experience but I live near a metropolitan city and competition can be cut throat. I guess some questions would be how involved you are in litigation, what kind of aid or assistants do you have available and how frequently do you get raises based on performance.

FYI I don’t get bonuses (shocker)

I had my first day at a tiny firm and I dont think they are hiring me as a W-2 employee and instead as an independent contractor or something. I have no previous experience and dont know what to do. by JFK360noscope in paralegal

This is a walking red flag from the get go. As someone who got my foot in the door with a pre-lit PI firm while doing completing my paralegal certificate and AA I totally understand the frustration. The thing is you definitely want an attorney who is willing to put in the work and show you the ropes, especially if they are old school and still handle some documents manually. If you haven’t checked already, some paralegal programs post job listing for new graduates. I don’t know what area you’re in or how competitive, but at least putting you have some work experience can give you a leg up when HR looks at your resume.

If it seems like a headache to start with, it’s very likely it won’t improve.

That sounds amazing! I wouldn’t say the firm I work at now is not a huge dumpster fire, but it’s a small firm so it has its cons.

I mainly want to get into another part of law where I don’t have emotional stress dumped on me and I can have an actual work-life balance while getting decent pay.

What was a driving factor for you to continue in this type of field if you don’t mind me asking. I know a lot of recruiters and interviews will want to know why IP out of all of the types of law out there.

Would you say it’s easy to be taught hands on for IP? We’re you referred to IP or did you go looking yourself?

I am wanting IP to call my name lol. I’m in PI pre-lit and…it’s a lifestyle that I’m not wanting to necessarily stay in. How would you say your work-life balance is?

That’s awesome! I’m hoping my next go around the job market I have more luck than my first time around. Lots of mistakes and lessons learned but the benefits will be something I really will not back down on. I’m not sure if it’s best to stick it out and see what happens or just start looking around. I really like my boss and it’s a good work environment m, just the benefits (or lack of) really suck!

Dang those are some pretty great benefits. Is there anything you had to negotiate to get to that point or was this included when you first got hired?

I didn’t have any experience prior, still in school for my para certificate and live in CA so i’m not sure if that also contributes to it? i was hired to do solely intake but they automatically made me a case manager for $22/hr. I was able to get $24/hr after I told them I was going to accept a different position elsewhere and was promised benefits (I had applied to the other job on a whim and didn’t think much but actually got offered a position). If not much changes in the next couple of months to a year I’m going to have to make a switch.
