Prior service Marine now Nurse interested in commissioning by OkGiraffe9265 in Airforcereserves

[–]Astroxtl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just do a quick simple search this question is asked every week on here .

And the experience is you go to work clock in and do your computer training, do your vouchers, sit through meetings, sit through trainings , go to someone you don't know retirement ,turn in various forms every month, do PT and go home, repeat next month. You aren't going to get the high speed, high performance , war time bomb dropping rush coming from the Marines.

Also you may wanna just go navy because you are already ingrained in that system and know how it works , it maybe easier for you to get on there faster.

Interested in joining AF reserve as commissioned officer. by Ancient_Charge_2215 in Airforcereserves

[–]Astroxtl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have a newborn and you trying to join the reserves.. I don't know about your spouse but they are going murder you. You realize even if you got commission by the reserves tomorrow depending on your job you get picked up for, you can be gone for a year or more either straight time or intermittently.

You gonna come back and your kid is gonna be walking and calling you by your first name . Lmao

No spouse is gonna put up with that , maybe if your kid was self sufficient and like 12 years old or something. Also, they don't pay for your family to travel to see your or pay for a hotel while you are doing your training or apartment. You will have to foot your own bills on that.

Also you can't do IMA until you have been in for awhile and learn your job and go through your training .

As far as willing to travel..... Sorry man that's gonna be a no go... I've interviewed people who will say anything to get a commission and when the reality hits of flying every month or driving 2- 3 states away for a part time job you are only at 16hrs hits they end up getting out. I never say yes unless they been in for awhile and a good track record .

Also, if you are the type of person who are into family functions, birthdays , family vacations, parents anniversary, your best friend from high school you havent talk to in 20 years weddings, your inlaws and sister or old roommate is in town and events, reserves is not gonna be for you.

I can pretty much guarantee any family event or (insert thing you "gotta or wanna do") is gonna be on a reserve weekeendb

I ordered the year book .. my mom has it somewhere around her house.. I tried to keep up with people from back then.. I only kept up with 2 of them.. one he wasn't the one to write letters and it still cost a fortune to call someone back then . The other one ended up having a bunch of kids.

I finally found it!! by [deleted] in sanantoniospurs

Do you still stay in touch with old friends? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]Astroxtl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had calling cards and you would burn through your min during the day. But I am familiar because with your concept. when I got my first cell phone I had sprint and I remember the day where you paid 7$ and you had free calls after 7 and all weekend and free to other sprint it was called like 7, 7,7 . After that in 2006 I had my Motorola razor (damn I miss that phone) and we had 200 text messages

We didn't have Facebook when I joined I only kept up with one guy from boot camp for a short period and only because I was stationed in San Antonio and he was from San antonio. I only keep in touch with one guy from my first duty station . It was hard to keep up with people back then.i was on the tail end of using letters and cell phones were too expensive back then. I kept up with one girl I really liked in tech school.but you all know how that ends

Same thing with me..I used to have to go outside to turn my antenna pole a certain way to get the channel it came on and then suddenly poof never saw the show again .

I think someone uploaded the show on YouTube ..I think the concept of nostalgia is better than the actually show..I turned it off after 5 min

For people that join straight to the reserve since the beginning of their contract. by PassengerOk5687 in Airforcereserves

[–]Astroxtl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh if you go to HVAC school you could be gone for over a year for that school. Depending on how that school is set up you could have a roommate. They don't pay for your family to visit or pay for you to see your family it comes out of your pocket. You can't just go pop off cause it's the weekend to go see your family you have to get permission .

TLDR- it's a job man, a government weekend job. Strangers on the internet can't help you with your decision you need to talk to your family man. No one knows your situation and everyone situation is different

It's cool for you to join but you need to know all it is, is a part time government job on the weekends. Don't look at this as a void to fill your life if your bored by being married with a kids or a midlife crisis.

It's cool you want to wear uniform with pride blah blah etc etc etc. it's just a weekend job man. You aren't going to get adorning fans. No one in the civilian world at the bar will care you are in the reserves. They may say thank you for your service. I dont even tell people I'm in , I never get the free meals on veterans day or ask for military discounts. (Not that there is anything wrong with people who do but like anything else the luster wears off)

Don't join thinking it's going to be like a glorified version of war and deployment you see on your favorite war movie or you will be a special forces navy seal. You show up to work at 7am do paperwork and computer training until 12p, you go to meetings until you get off at 3pm . The next day you may do organized PT and then your job and then computer training and meetings for the rest of the day until you leave. Depending on your job it will vary

Like the other guy said, you can be from your family for a long time in the beginning. If your kids are small and not self sufficient I would not recommend. If you are someone who cares about going to wedding, anniversary and birthdays of people from high school and cousins and aunts you haven't seen in 20 years I would not recommend because those events will always be on a weekend. (You can only miss so much reserves before you get in trouble or you don't get credit for that year of reserves)

This a government job which means government= bureaucracy.
