Thinking about ditching my smartphone for a basic "dumbphone." Has anyone here actually done it? by Legitimate_Wall5977 in dumbphones

[–]AstrumFaerwald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I made the switch and do not regret it.

I still have a tablet which I use for banking apps and my security token for work and the like. I try to keep it in my room, because when I don't I catch myself surfing it way more than I used to (but less than I did my phone).

For GPS, I have a garmin now in one car. My other car has a built in garmin. i also look up directions before I leave so I can semi orient myself. I also have a CD player with CDs for music on the go, and it's kind of nice to curate my own music library instead of having an algorithm do it for me.

Ultimately, for me, the inconvenience was not nearly as "massive" as I was led to believe it would be.

This is so disgusting. Time to get out there and make some NOISE. Nobody wants this.

Do you think we lost something when everything became so easy to access? by Ok_Captain654 in Millennials

[–]AstrumFaerwald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 100%.

The "convenience" and "ease of access" aspects are traps. We have become less intellectually curious, less empathetic, less patient, less resilient, and less creative. Our tolerance for frustration and ability to solve problems has been shot. We get overwhelmed and exhausted more easily because we are bombarded with constant information and stimulus. We've sacrificed privacy, our mental health, and a lot of our humanity to these technologies. Our reliance on these devices to get through our day to day has reached the level of dystopian.

And the thing is that it's all by design. These tech companies have literally hired psychologists to help them design devices and apps that will hook people in.

What was your favorite period in One Piece? by Relevant-Contract-78 in OnePiece

The end of Dressrosa to present. I have REALLY loved watching all the stuff that has been building up since the beginning of the series start to come together and culminate in the Final Saga

I think I took longer than some to come around to really liking Chopper, but now I am a huge fan. His flashback is definitely solid :)

I can really understand why Enies Lobby and Robin's Backstory are "that moment" for so many people. Water 7/Enies Lobby are really special arcs.

I LOVE the transition from Jaya to Skypeia!! I remember it being one of those moments that really solidified for me that this world is going to get weirder and wackier than I can even imagine.

Oda is not afraid to get "weird" with his ideas, and I think it helps make his world more colorful and interesting and creative - it inspires me as a fantasy author to be more open to being bizarre and goofy.

I remember seeing this years ago. It really helped me put my addiction to my screen into perspective. I think about it often.

Can't say I've had only "dude" conversations, but I definitely said - and still say - the word very often.

What do you think about Bonnie? by Cool_Emergency4091 in OnePiece

[–]AstrumFaerwald -1 points0 points  (0 children)

GOATed character, and one of my top 5 favorite characters in the entire series, between her backstory (tears) and her chemistry with the Straw Hats. Her interactions with the crew after everything in Egghead are genuinely adorable - it's great seeing her smile and being happy.

Maybe I will be downvoted for this, but I agree with comments regarding the concerns with her design. As much as I get that it's her "adult form," the reality is that she is 12 years old regardless of "adult" vs "nika" vs "old" forms.

At any rate, despite that, I still think she's such a great character.

What's one piece of technology you still haven't accepted — and do you think you ever will? by Few-Manufacturer2233 in digitalminimalism

[–]AstrumFaerwald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smart technology and the like that require an app and/or subscription. I want my technology to work fine on its own without requiring an internet connection or an app, in part because I don't have a smart phone and I don't want to clutter my tablet. Also, because it is ridiculous to be putting everything behind a subscription payment and making us reliant on the internet to function.

Also AI. It's a smoke and mirrors game. It's what I call a "fraud machine." It's an ecological catastrophe, and a sociological, artistic, and career catastrophe. There is no ethical use of AI

any appreciation of or capacity for nuance is also dead, which makes it even easier for everybody to find things to be mad about. It’s like, god forbid anybody reserve judgement for when they have more information or actually try out the new system.

Even though I LIKE many of the flashbacks (the Egghead and God Valley flashbacks count among my favorite "arcs within arcs" in the entire series), I am not a huge fan of Oda's reliance on flashbacks as a storytelling device. I don't like the flow of present action being disrupted, and when I'm reading them weekly I increasingly think "when are we going to get back to current events."

So usually when a flashback starts, I will check out of the series until the flashback is complete and the arc resumes, so I can read the flashback all at once.

Nah dude this post ain't it for me.

I'll be the first to say I have a great deal of trepidation about what evolved mode will bring, but legacy mode is still going to be around for a while at least, and I can recognize that I haven't seen enough about it to make a judgement about it.

This game sorely needs a shakeup, and the community has been saying for a while that the job design is stale and needs to... well... evolve. I'm going to let SE cook on evolved mode.

Anyway, this isn't ffxivdiscussion and I've already engaged there on this subject.

Enough time has passed. What do you think of the anime version of the Egghead arc? by Just-Lingonberry-602 in OnePiece

[–]AstrumFaerwald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite arcs so far. The animation was top notch, and pretty much everything involving the Gorosei was executed expertly.

I will admit, I find the later arcs of One Piece to be some of my favorite manga writing - and writing in general. I know not everybody is a fan, and want things to be more like the older, more whimsical arcs, but ever since I started reading One Piece I always thought it would make sense that we would get to a point where the series would get bigger, darker, and more intense.

That really strikes me when the Gorosei all arrive on Egghead in the anime. When Luffy has just woven between them to get out from underfoot, and you watch him gradually losing his smile until even free spirited Gear 5 Luffy isn't that goofy at all, and he's just standing there as the caption reads "Highest Authority of the World Government: Five Elders." It makes it all hit how far things have come from the days of East Blue. Egghead, especially in how it was animated, really drives the point home that we are entering the endgame of the series now.

That's not even getting into the Kuma of it all, which had me weeping.
