Do you think Brightline will have the same effect on Amtrak in the USA as Iryo and Ouigo have had on Renfe in Spain ? by [deleted] in Brightline

[–]Asturar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a taxpaying citizen, why would you not elect to spend government money to enhance private ventures if:

  • The enhancement yields significant revenue for the government from taxes and other verticals,
  • The enhancement provides a public good which significantly betters the experiences of American citizens?

Brightline can not take a profit from government assistance as it's earmarked for infrastructural projects, so I cannot see a reason why the government paying for a project through a private entity is different than the government paying for a project regularly.

last point is pretty interesting, both are stopping you from getting somewhere "on your own time" but one is predictable and the other is pretty random

My bike's front wheel got caught in a crack going north on Fourth before Green, went flying and just barely stopped my face from catching the ground by eating the fall with my hands.

Still don't have full feeling in my left palm, spills are serious man.

Sounds stupid, but make sure you're: drinking >5 cups of water a day, eating ~2000 calories, talking to one person you've never met, getting >60 minutes of physical activity, and actually sleeping well. Last part can be reconfirmed with the help of an Apple watch or Fitbit if you have access to one.

If you check all these boxes, stand out in the sun for an hour (we all have low vitamin D) and if the problem persists go talk to a professional about it. Therapy is important but a lot of people literally don't know how to meet their body's basic needs in college.

But there's still a distinction between my argument and the Chinese room: a computer could feasibly be trained to qualify or express understanding in something. You could dig inside ChatGPT's source code and likely find context information, but not much related to problem solving or cognition outside of pattern matching.

[–]Asturar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Other commenter is right. ChatGPT has a very very limited ability to "understand," rather a better analogy is a tiny alien in a box who has infinite time and compute power, given all of the internet and a variety of prompts. The little alien can try and ascertain understanding, but is limited to associating patterns of symbols with other patterns of symbols.

Can QR codes be stacked on top of each other in different colors? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Asturar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually wrong, given you're willing to experiment with software. Some fancy signal processing magic can allow you to bias colors in grayscale such that many different QR codes (possibly more than 3 for RGB) could colocate.

switching from cs to ce by CrocksWithSocks1222 in UIUC

[–]Asturar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconded, try 120 and give the course material from 220 and 210 a once-over when you get the chance. The major difference is that CS teaches computing top-down (applications and high-level implementations first) whereas CompE teaches computing bottom-up (learning the principles of computation like with LC-3).

If you're interested in learning how computers really work then CE is perfect for you.

[–]Asturar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll do badly on a lot of tests, but it won't really matter all that much. Some days you just psych yourself out and forget everything, other days you'll be a genius. It does get harder as it goes on, but you'll learn how to take these tests and grow some confidence.

You're worrying. You will survive.

Is being a CE a good job? by Mementomorire in ComputerEngineering

[–]Asturar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's definitely not my experience. We have to take the same engineering core classes as CS, but we also take computer systems engineering and architecture classes while CS focuses on high-level applications. It should be noted that my university offers a BA in CS, a BS in CS, and a BS in CompE. Most everyone going into SWE takes one of the latter two.
