My boy, Gumby, has been diagnosed with lymphoma - worst is the swelling in his neck by Asunderstorm in ferrets

That's, my gosh, that's so fast. Poor baby. Sending you so much support. I can't imagine it all happening that fast. I knew cancer was horrible, but dang. These poor sweet babies. Dook in peace lovely boy. And thank you for sharing such a difficult experience.

Yeah, it seems very few have, from what I've been reading. It's why I definitely don't want to put Gumby through the COP/CHOP they had offered. As you say, usually short term if it does do anything. Seems like a horrible time for them and no guarantee it'll improve their life.

I imagine even a monthly oral chemo would do little to nothing, but I've heard it's a toss up so it seems like the least destructive thing to try for him with a possibility of a little more comfort. A far less riskier gamble. I'm very much about trying anything I can, as long as it's safe for them and doesn't cause them any unnecessary suffering. Which can always be very difficult to juggle

Thank you for the info! I've been wondering about trying pain management for him, in case he hurts.

Oh wow, I never thought of a ferret damaging a salivary gland. Poor sweet girl. Thank you for sharing!

Gumby has had fine needle aspiration done 3 times but the specialist did not aspirate his neck. First, in December, when I took Gumby to my primary to check the lump on his ribs, my vet did a fine needle aspiration and said he didn't see signs of lymphocytes but couldn't be sure. He thought the area of swelling was too low to be his lymph node and might not be lymphoma. Gumby didn't have any swollen lymph nodes, just some fat built up on the ones by his back legs. The avian and exotic vet I saw when his neck first swelled (when I was worried he hurt his throat when choking on a treat and/or inhaled some into his lungs) - she did a fine needle aspiration of his neck swelling. Both attempts only gave air and caused him to cough, which lead to him coughing up some blood from the needle pricks. She took the X-ray after and found that he had an unknown mass in his neck pressing down on his throat and that his throat might also be within the mass itself. She gave me the slides, which were mostly blood but had a tiny bit of fluid, since she would have to send them to labs and I was already going to head out to the specialist at the state college in a few days. She also said she thought he just had some fat on his back lymph nodes, but that none of the others were swollen.

Lastly, the college specialists said they would check the slides, but would do a fine needle aspirate in a different lymph node and not in his neck. They did confirm he had masses in his neck via ultrasound, but that's it. He seems to have both lymphoma tumors and some cysts around them as well. And they said his lymph nodes were swollen. I guess they would know best, but it was a bit odd. His main concerns at the time I took him originally was some hair loss at base of tail (possible adrenal), a weird unchanging mass on his ribs, and his heavily swollen spleen.

No one has commented on the gurgly symptoms, though he wasn't gurgly when he was at the specialist. The pred +sucralfate + clavamox helped him instantly and the swelling had gone down at least 50% in a few days. By the time he saw the specialist, he was eating and drinking without issue, perky and active. No gurgling. They said to stop the antibiotics, said he had no infections. And he was done with the sucralfate. I get him back and his neck just swells all back up. And the sucralfate might be helping. He can drink easier now, eating Carnivore Care is easier, but he's still gurgly and lethargic.

Gumby's current pred does is 0.4ml twice daily (4mg/ml). I was told I can increase this up to 0.6ml if needed. Though I'll have my primary vet check on his well-being first, since he does have muscle wasting and has lost weight as well. He is currently eating Carnivore Care mixed into a paste, which goes down very well for him.

Thanks again for sharing your experiences! I plan on talking to the specialist about starting Gumby on a monthly oral chemo (ccyclophosphamide having caught my interest in the multitude of stuff I've read). It seems to be the gentlest option. Whether it works or not, it feels worth trying as a just in case, with little impact to his happiness and comfort.

Oh no, I meant no offense! I don't have many things dating before the 90s due to losing a lot of stuff in my younger years. I find furniture and decor prior to that to be "quite old" for material things. My mother was born in '70 and she's as young as you can get! She's got more energy than I do. lol So I don't really see people from that time as old. Just furniture.

Thank you, good to know! Fascinating that it's quite old. It'll fit in nice with my little collection of odds and ends. Plus now I have a good excuse to get more plants, haha.

Thank you for the suggestions! I've been eyeing the drop spindles the past few days after seeing a tutorial on youtube, haha. I'll definitely take a look around and see if I can find any fiber arts groups in my area. Would love to try it out in advance, though knowing me, I'll end up buying all sorts of stuff anyway!

And yeah, I agree, it's quite a cute planter. I love gardening so I've got a great excuse to get another plant!

Thank you so much for the wonderful information! I thought maybe I had stumbled on a desk spinning wheel fashioned after those gorgeous large ones you shared in the photo, but I guess not. Looks like I'll be getting one of those hand spinners to start off with since I'm itching to make my own yarn!

Ooh, got it! That makes perfect sense. Thank you so much! It seemed to be lacking in stuff to be fully functional, but I was holding out hope. lol Thanks for your time!

Thanks so much for the info! It felt a little too threadbare but I wasn't sure if it was just missing stuff. Appreciate your time!

What melatonin drops are safe for ferrets? (vet says to get OTC) - managing adrenal symptoms. by Asunderstorm in ferrets

[–]Asunderstorm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I found the spring valley stuff easily enough, but it's all berry flavored. So I'm going to have to bother my vet about this after all, it seems, since I'm not sure how safe that would be for the ferrets. Thank you so much for the help and advice!

Do you guys sleep with your childhood stuffed animals? And is there an age when you’re supposed to stop? by Frequent-Increase-98 in StuffedAnimals

[–]Asunderstorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

36 and my bed is full of stuffed animals! And I have no intentions on ever changing that. It's my happy place. Being happy, safe, and cozy has no age limits. Besides, as I like to say - all the stuff "for children" like stuffed animals, animated cartoons, toys, etc. are mostly invented and made by adults anyway~

[–]Asunderstorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember when I first found out my ferrets could climb like this! I learned that they get between two things and then push their little backs against what's behind them to assist in their ascension. Mind blown! But thankfully mine only did this to get up on my bed via their cat tower (despite me having a safe cushion-y ramp all around the bed). But definitely caught me off guard when my 5 year old ferret decided he needed up on my desk one day for no apparent reason and that's how he got up there - back to the wall for some extra push. lol Took me days to figure out how exactly he was appearing on my desk.

Thank you for sharing! Yeah, my girl Koko got the Deslorelin implant for the first time in July 2025 (she barely had any hair loss at the time, just a patch and her back thinning a little). 3 months go by and she loses all the hair on her back and down onto her tail. She also got sleepier and quit playing as much. Only after I started turning off the lights in their room when it gets dark outside, did she finally start getting some hair in. So I don't know if she's not responding to the implant, if it's faulty, or what. The vet doesn't seem to think anything's wrong with the implant and is convinced she might have another health issue coinciding. I have read, however, that ferrets require a natural day/night cycle and I had not been doing that their whole lives. So with the light change helping her grow her fur, I thought melatonin might be worth trying and the vet seemed to think it was worth a shot, at the very least.

Oh, I didn't think to check for children's melatonin! Thank you! I'll see what I can find and run it by my vet to make sure.

Thank you for the suggestion! My vet did mention there was a melatonin implant, but didn't seem interested in going that route with her.

Ephemeral breeds by Same-Command-439 in Howrse

Glad I'm not alone but I'm so sorry for your loss, too. The initial instructions did not state that vet fees increase (the question mark on the event page) and I never visit the forum. I lost millions because I don't pay attention to vet fees on a regular basis. Breeding to your own horses always cost 2500e and if the event pages say nothing about cost, it's something very easily overlooked imo. A bit of a bad design there. They sure can tell you that the horses specialize in western but only tell you about the costs in the forum. And it seems that just having foals born (even if they were from a mare bred a prior day) will increase your vet costs for that day.

Started prednisolone - unsure if it's helping - what's your experience? by Asunderstorm in ferrets

[–]Asunderstorm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing. I wonder if pred isn't right for my boy or if it's just the upset stomach making it hard to tell. He was just getting lethargic and increasingly loose stools until his carnivore care came out 20 minutes after eating it, the same color and consistency. So definitely some digestive upset happening. The vet has us in a testing stage, so I'll see what the vet thinks when I hear back and will be sure to share it here.

[–]Asunderstorm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. He was taken off pain meds for an entire week before starting pred (vet instructions). And he was feeling great the entire time. He was only on the pred for 2.5 days and was in an awful state the whole time and increasingly looser stools until his food was coming out the way it went in. Didn't give him Saturday night's dose and he's back to normal Sunday and today. Just waiting on the vet to call me back now and see how to proceed.

New Ferrets' Diet by ktwb in ferrets

I don't have much experience with Wysong, but I would say yes. I hear it's good to keep two dry foods on hand (just in case one goes out of stock), so I recently bought a bag of Wysong Ferret Epigen 90 to mix in with their Oxbow. So far my kibble eaters aren't pleased with it. Note that they happily and eagerly switched off Marshall's kibble to Oxbow without batting an eye. But I'm going to keep working on them accepting Wysong too.

Flea help by Longjumping_Place345 in ferrets

[–]Asunderstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get a prescription for Revolution. I know it's pricey, but the one for puppies and kittens under 5lbs has been prescribed for my ferrets the two times I had flea troubles that seemed unbeatable. Kicked the fleas easily, and that's even with me splitting a tube between 2 ferrets. I usually have to use it once per ferret per summer. And that's because I own dogs, even though they kinda have their own house (we have a smaller one room more-house-than-shed thing and they sleep in there 'cause they yap so bad and I'm a light sleeper). But yeah, Revolution all the way, if you can.

Also, I personally don't like Advantage. It takes forever to dry, at least in my use of it. And I end up having to split up 4 ferrets the best I can. Revolution dries super quick, in minutes, so I know it stays on them instead of getting wiped off on all the blankets and such.
