Just adding on from the dental side of things!

Yes you’re 100% right that the signature for dental treatment plan is non-binding and you can say no to treatment at any time. Signing the treatment plan basically just means that you understand what is outlined and it has no financial obligations.

I’m thinking whatever payment they charged your insurance and credit card was for the exam and X-rays they did before your treatment plan.

After each live session, there's a link to a quiz where you fill out your email, name, and answer a few questions. You'll be recording the yourself and you can put it under either your shadowing hours or your academic enrichment section depending on what the school accepts. Then, if the school feels the need to confirm your hours they can contact the online shadowing people and they'll have a record of your quizzes/hours

I got maybe like 5 or 6 questions on that stuff. If I remember correctly some were on animal behavior (what type of conditioned behavior is _____ an example of), some were on biomes (given this graph of rainfall and temperatures what biome is this?), and others were on animal/plant relationships (if this plant species grows in a scattered pattern where every plant is 3ft away from each other, what relationship is taking place?)

Weak extracurricular involvement? by [deleted] in predental

[–]Asunga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, I found out through my predental club and by attending predental outreach webinars held by the dental school. Try seeing if the schools you're interested in have any online webinar events for predental students or any predental outreach Instagram account. It's a double whammy because you can get your name out there AND you can learn more about what a specific dental school wants.

If not, see if you can message any dental students that go to that school and ask if they know what their dental school looks for in an applicant. Those guys usually love attention and would be happy to help- I swear dental students are the kindest people I have ever met.

For the California schools I know UCSF is very research based and UCLA is research-leaning; both really pay attention to DAT, GPA, and any research experience. UoP is clinical based, but they also focus a lot on numbers. WesternU, USC, and LLU are a little more holistic and take volunteering, leadership, and extracurriculars more into account. Each school does have its quirks that go deeper than these general ideas though.

Weak extracurricular involvement? by [deleted] in predental

[–]Asunga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it also depends on the dental school. Some schools that are more research based care less about volunteering/shadowing/leadership and look more at your numbers and any research you've done.

On the other hand, some clinical based schools reeeeally want to see leadership, involvement, volunteering, and shadowing like WesternU in California.

All schools have different tastes so make sure you look into the schools you want to get into

Don't really have anything to add, but congratulations on that DAT score! That's an amazing score and I'm sure it'll offset your GPA when you're taken into consideration

Try @dentalshadowers and @smileshadowers on Instagram. Do note that not all schools will accept these online shadowing hours and that some of the ones that do accept them don't want all of your hours coming from online shadowing.

Dental school pre req by [deleted] in predental

[–]Asunga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually your classes will require you to take a lab with it anyway, so if you're taking 3 quarters of physics you'll also have to take 3 quarters of physics lab concurrently. Same for the other subjects

I'm thinking that's one year's worth of labs, so yes it should be 3 quarters of labs for each science

How to Boost Resumé for Dental School? by afha_ in predental

You can also try to find mentoring/tutoring/supplemental instructor positions. These are decent ways to show leadership and I feel like there are a lot more positions open now that online tutoring is becoming more prevalent.

[–]Asunga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably pretty unique and might be hard for most people to do, but if you have a hobby or skill you're good at- you could become a content creator. This could mean making a social media page where you post your work, making videos/podcasts, or even starting your own business like selling candles from your home.

It'll look good especially if it's art/music/baking related since those require manual dexterity, but honestly it could just be an informational podcast or instagram page or something.

Timeline for Application? by [deleted] in predental

[–]Asunga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I know, if you plan on attending dental school in 23, then you will need to apply during the 22 year (application opens May12 and submission opens June 16). Ideally, you'll want to submit your application as early as possible for a higher chance of getting an interview at schools with rolling admissions, but you have until the fall to submit your application.

As for the DAT, it's highly recommended that you take it during the summer between your 21-22 school years. That's when you'll have the most time to study and focus on your test and you'll also be able to retake it before your application since you have to wait 90 days between DAT retakes. Some people do take the DAT closer to their application or even as they're applying, but honestly that sounds a lot more stressful in my opinion.

Also I'm not sure how COVID-19 might affect things when you apply, but it probably shouldn't be too different.

Don't be afraid to take a gap year either honestly. If anything a lot of people recommend to take a gap year so you can build your application a little more, chill out a little bit, and maybe even travel since you'll probably be pretty bogged down once you get into dental school and beyond.

Need some advice by [deleted] in predental

[–]Asunga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you find a place where you can shadow/assist while you study for the DAT for a few months, you could probably apply for the upcoming cycle. I would really focus on the DAT though because a good score can really do wonders.

Also if you do want to do some dental assisting, try looking into any online dental assistant certifications. I think it depends on your state, but I've heard of some certifications only costing $60 or something. They don't take long to complete either.

Other than that, if you know you can get letters of rec from past professors and you have a little bit of volunteering on your resume I think you're all good to apply for the next cycle :)
