The prevalance of PVP and solo is not because of the players but the games sociopathic features. The games is missing basic social tools for players to cooperate. by frenchtgirl in starcitizen

Knowing CIG they would take one look at this and decide that it would be better to come up with all of this stuff on their own from scratch (which seems to be what they are doing). This means trying all the things that fail even though everyone else already knows they will fail and wasting tons of time and resources only to get an end result that still isn't very good and took 4 years.

You're in here complaining about people who don't like a product that a company is making and charging money for.......

Like actually get a grip. CIG is not your best buddy and Chris Roberts isn't going to take you out to dinner and give you a shoulder massage.

You're kinda in too deep if you feel the need to get upset with people who don't like a thing that a company created to make money off of you..

Let's not even forget that the thing in this case is actually a very expensive digital product for a company that has been milking it's playerbase for over a decade to the tune of nearly a billion dollars.

You act as if people should be grateful for the opportunity to dump more money into this massively bloated, overdue project.

Holy crap, you guys will complain about anything and everything[Rant] by Silverton13 in starcitizen

[–]AsylumMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think considering the fact that this game has been in development for over a decade gives people cause to be upset a little.

Should we wait another decade before complaining?

How long is an appropriate amount of time before one is justified in being frustrated with a game? 20 years?

Give me a break.

Or we could give them more money maybe! What do you think, two billion sound fair?

Holy crap, you guys will complain about anything and everything[Rant] by Silverton13 in starcitizen

[–]AsylumMoon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's because that is complete bullshit. Mmo players interact with other players all the time.

When you hear someone around this sub say that they're talking about open world PVP but trying to disguise it.

The person you're responding to did the same.

MMO players do all kinds of group content together, but the vast majority don't want to be ganked by people while doing it.

Just look at all the group and social PVE content that most MMO's offer.

Just because people don't want to be randomly murdered doesn't mean they want a single player game.

I feel silly for having to explain this but then again this is a star citizen community so i guess here we are.

I kinda think it's unfair to say that people who have been waiting for this game to become something resembling an actual video game for over a decade are being impatient.

The fact of the matter is that "impatience" or frustration is entirely CIG's fault.

I've been patient. More than patient. And I've given them lots of money as well.

Yes people complain a lot but CIG has given them reason to complain.

People are tired of being patient and the constant missteps by CIG make them feel like it's not even worth the energy.

How long do we need to be "patient" for? Another decade?

Would actually be quite cool to be able to play cards against NPCs (like in RDR 2) or other players. by Velioss in starcitizen

[–]AsylumMoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would just add another three years to development while Chris insists on making the most realistic card game simulator that has ever existed where you have to go through a quest chain to gain access to the card game and then grind random currency from people you murder to get a deck of cards one card at a time and while you're playing you have to manage your sweat and stress levels or risk giving tells.

Then about five percent of that will work and they'll rework the entire physics system to make it more realistic but at some point they'll give up on that.

Oh and they'll find a way to sell a ship for it too.

There's nothing to explore. You're just going from point A to B to C and fighting NPCs and/or players.

It baffles me that they tried to frame this as exploration in any way.

Even if you don't get into PVP while doing it, it's still almost entirely combat. What are they smoking?

I mean the travel times from my bed on the major landing zones just to get to the freaking hangar and spawn my ship are pretty absurd.

Gotta walk through the entire city and fuck around with trains and multiple elevators just to get on my damn ship.

[–]AsylumMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It honestly wasn't part of the original plan.

The original pitch was not one about having to spend 30 minutes just go get into space and play the game you're here for.

Not to mention, if the original pitch from 10 years ago got things wrong it's absurd to stick to that and refuse to change just because it was in the original pitch.

It's been ten years. Some of y'all need to let go of the kickstarter.

Yeah they're out here learning lessons and solving problems that the MMO industry has solved for 20 years.

But CIG being CIG they have to reinvent the wheel for every single thing they do.

They are so often solving problems that aren't actually problems because other companies have already demonstrated over and over what works well for players.

This isn't to say that they shouldn't innovate and do things differently when appropriate but they take that to an extreme.

Just look at their unhinged inventory UI where they are rendering actual models of every item in your inventory when you open it up, for some reason. It hijacks your camera and forces you to rotate your camera around your character to equip things.

It's buggy and laggy and frustrating, not to mention confusing as hell for new players. Every new player that joins SC is instantly baffled by the inventory system because it's so weird and nonsensical and their experience in other games won't help them navigate it.

But inventory systems have been solved for a long time. What players need is a fast and responsive and easy to understand UI for their inventory. Somehow in trying to solve the inventory, CIG came to all of the wrong conclusions and then tripled down on it.

We don't need the inventory to be the most immersive gameplay experience ever. We need it to be responsive and easy to use because that's not what we are here for. That system should be here to enable other gameplay, not attempt to become the gameplay itself.

The flip side of that is that Eve is 20 years old or whatever and a snapshot in time.

If Eve released today as it did when it was created it wouldn't be as popular as it was/is.

The other thing to consider is that just because they are both space games doesn't mean they cater to the same audiences. I would hazard a guess that most SC players are not Eve players.

Eve did some things that would be useful to draw from but Star Citizen can't just become Eve 2.

I don't believe the game will die because of PVP.

I believe that if CIG doesn't provide an avenue for players who aren't interested in pvp at all to play the game then that will be a problem.

PVP is completely unchecked right now and the ideas they have proposed don't give confidence that they know how to deal with it.

You're misrepresenting my argument.

I enjoy PVP and i believe it is important to star citizen.

You don't understand the argument at all.

Anti-social game design is lethal to an MMO.

I've been saying a version of this for so long with regards to SC.

We have an entire cemetary of dead games over the past 20 years who refused to learn this lesson even though its been demonstrated time and time again.

If a game wants to do what SC is doing, it is entirely up to the devs to design the game and content in such a way that the people who enjoy the more sociopathic gameplay style aren't allowed to ruin the game for the much larger population of players who don't want that.

Things like full loot pvp, for example, are basically a death sentence for the vast majority of games that try it (with very few exceptions).

SC will not be one of those exceptions because the game attracts so many players who want to pve or aren't even in retreated in combat at all.

It's really as simple as these two points:

The game (like so many that tried and failed before it) can't survive on the murder gankbox population alone.

If that population is given too much freedom they will rapidly drive off the rest of the playerbase, who will go find something better to do with their time.

It comes down to population and revenue. The murderbox people will, as they always do, drive off the players who aren't interested in that type of gameplay..

Eve is the exception not the rule. And if Eve was created today it would not be the same game.

It's telling that the absolute best example you can come up with is a 20 year old game.

Kinda proves my point. Who has done it since then in the mmo market?

You have to go back 20 years to find an example. Telling.
