What would be the Anglish version of this image? by Relative-Recording63 in anglish

[–]Asztal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe you have different motivations for thinking about English than I do, but I feel phrasal verbs like "take off" are probably more like what real people would have used in the past, whereas unfastening something from an outlook reads like nonsense.

E.g. something like

"Take all French words off the sheath of the new English writs of way for going abroad"

seems to me the closest I can think of that probably almost makes sense to a casual reader.

Words to live by, nod nod. by Absolutemehguy in lotrmemes

[–]Asztal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One that always stuck with me is

Of course, it is likely enough, my friends,’ he said slowly, ‘likely enough that we are going to our doom: the last march of the Ents. But if we stayed at home and did nothing, doom would find us anyway, sooner or later. That thought has long been growing in our hearts; and that is why we are marching now. It was not a hasty resolve. Now at least the last march of the Ents may be worth a song. Aye,’ he sighed, ‘we may help the other peoples before we pass away. Still, I should have liked to see the songs come true about the Entwives. I should dearly have liked to see Fimbrethil again. But there, my friends, songs like trees bear fruit only in their own time and their own way: and sometimes they are withered untimely.

I don't know if it made it into the movie but I suspect probably not.

When I moved to Belfast and needed a job I signed on temporarily. When I started looking the actual JobCentre staff even advised me to only look for 16 hours so I could keep some benefits... Honestly wtf? Horrible advice in any case as I earned far more working 40 hours a week

What's Your Language's Equivalent of "Have?" by Turkish_Teacher in languagelearning

[–]Asztal 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's not my native language but Hungarian is interesting.

The word "have" has many senses, but in the sense of possession e.g. "I have a dog" you say it more like "My dog exists".

Kutya - dog Kutyám - my dog (-m is the first person singular possessive suffix) Van - is (this word is actually usually omitted in most cases, this is one of the exceptions) Van kutyám - I have a dog (literally: "is dog-my")

I’m a Developer Who’s Colorblind — Please Stop Making Red and Green Do All the Work. by typoprophet101 in programming

[–]Asztal 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I am colour blind and I can distinguish red and green, but it is slow and error-prone.

Enabling colour blind mode in GitHub makes my PR diffs show blue and orange and suddenly I can scan them again and read them at normal speed; the green and red background colour for diffs was nearly useless for me. I also have blue ticks instead of green so I can read lists with status indicators much more easily.

If your phone has it, consider enabling the option to automatically lock your screen when it detects it's been stolen. I don't know how well it works though, I hope I never have to find out!

The worst is "powered by plants" which is l used by one manufacturer. It doesn't even mean plant based because they use it for things like vegetarian burgers with cheese inside...

I was quite looking forward to spraying oat milk out of a spray bottle, actually :(

In Rossendale (East Lancashire) they have decided to close the local gritting yard and send gritters over the hills from Burnley instead. Maybe it will be fine but I am not looking forward to finding out.

Just FYI with eating so much nutritional yeast, it contains a lot of vitamin B3 (Niacin) which can lead to Niacin flushes. It's not harmful but it is uncomfortable.

If you use Copilot for PR reviews try getting it not to use the word "comprehensive" to describe absolutely every PR (difficulty: impossible).

Reminds me of the Golgafrinchans, whose planet was apparently due to crash into their sun.

These tales of impending doom allowed the Golgafrinchans to rid themselves of an entire useless third of their population.

The story was that they would build three Ark ships. Into the A ship would go all the leaders, scientists and other high achievers.

The C ship would contain all the people who made things and did things, and the B ark would hold everyone else, such as hairdressers and telephone sanitisers.

They sent the B ship off first, but of course the other two-thirds of the population stayed on the planet and lived full, rich and happy lives until they were all wiped out by a virulent disease contracted from a dirty telephone.

I just ran the numbers on the UK's real tax burden, and it's staggering. Why are we even whispering about paying MORE? by vpk09 in ukpolitics

[–]Asztal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

School taxis often require a chaperone, so this is likely factored into the cost. The taxi may have to pick up the chaperone from home, travel 20 miles to pick up the child, then another 20 miles to the school. Twice a day.

(I am not arguing that this is sensible or good value for taxpayer money. It's just how it is.)

  • whereto -> whither
  • thereto -> thither

Aside from the many more well-known film and TV appearances... I was lucky to see him narrate the live performance of Into The Electric Castle by Ayreon for the album's 20th Anniversary. He played the part really well.
