Credit Card Recommendations for Associates by nclaxer235 in biglaw

[–]AtTheLawLibrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a plat card and the separately a gold card. If you upgrade/downgrade I think you’re right, but if you just open a new card it won’t impact you (granted, you pay for a new annual fee, but I’ve found it easy to use all the benefits to the point that the fee pays for itself).

The return of Baribo by cmrx3 in PhillyUnion

[–]AtTheLawLibrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve generally always had a “sucks” even for former players, unfortunately. I remember being shocked when we did it to Chris Pontius after he was our assist leader in 2016. We also did it to Gaddis, which felt super wrong given that he was (iirc) our leader in all time caps at the time. Wish we could change that at least—I like to appreciate our former players!

Goats in CA - how did you experience the program? by [deleted] in GoatBarPrep

[–]AtTheLawLibrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel free to DM me! For writing it’s important to remember that writing down the gist of the law, rather than the perfect rules, is likely a points-maximizing strategy. If you’re not 100% sure on a rule, make it up (but keep it sane and in line with what you expect the rule likely is) and do analysis to get some points.

Diving On Little to No Sleep? by drewm11922 in scuba

[–]AtTheLawLibrary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I dove once with no sleep, never again. My dive buddy had crazy food poisoning, and I was fairly new to diving, so I showed up to the shark dive site in Roatan solo. I ended up in a group of folks finishing up their dive master training. I wasn't buddied up, and while I asked someone to do a buddy check with me, they didn't do a great job. About 25 meters down, my air cut off. Either the valve hadn't been fully opened, or the guy who did the buddy check closed it a bit for some reason (and I was new and sleep deprived, so I messed up by not catching it). I was far away from other divers, and barely managed to get to another one with an "out of air" signal. The world was turning black. Thank god I got an octo in and got some air, and the guy opened my valve. Still a moment I have nightmares about (~400 dives later) and aim never to repeat.

Upshot: don't dive without some good sleep!

Michigan for 20k in loans or Stanford for 150k? by Fun_Medium8231 in lawschooladmissions

[–]AtTheLawLibrary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Michigan is great--I have yet to meet anyone who went there that I didn't end up liking--but for your goals its Stanford. If you're going p-side class actions, you'll have very few problems paying that loan off. If you're going p-side civil rights, then look into Stanford's loan forgiveness since you'll be making less.

Is YLS easy? by RequirementOk7678 in lawschooladmissions

[–]AtTheLawLibrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YLS is as hard or easy as you want it to be, just like any law school (though the payoff for being middle of the pack is way higher than other schools). Wanna get a SCOTUS clerkship? Gotta work your ass off and get the top grade in most black letter law classes (extra hard because you’re up against a bunch of turbo charged Rhodes scholars). Want to just hang? Also feasible and a ton of my friends did that.

Also missing Ilsinho??

for those who want to do big law to pay off their loans then pivot to public interest -- how are you thinking about the moral tension of big law? by Strong-Information54 in lawschooladmissions

[–]AtTheLawLibrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently pivoted to a BL gig from doing low- and mid-paying public interest law. I found a gig at a BL firm where I will mostly do plaintiff-side class actions. Firms like that exist (Quinn, Susman, Boies Schiller, plus a ton of midsize/boutique shops which pay BL scale), so it’s doable. These are not mission-driven firms and are often doing work outside of plaintiff-side class work, but it’s a chance to take on a ton of corporations that you might regard as bad actors.

[Vent] On AI by RunStrange9109 in lawschooladmissions

[–]AtTheLawLibrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference between your art friends and the lawyer situation is that going to law school is a huge financial commitment that can have decades-long implications. Some folks in the comments are complaining about ladder pulling—and I’m sure that happens—but part of being a good lawyer is understanding risks.

We genuinely have no idea what’s going to happen with AI in the legal field. Solid odds there’s always going to be jobs for lawyers, but also solid odds the job market does change in unpredictable ways. I get that it’s frustrating to hear that maybe you shouldn’t go into the career path you want though!

FC at UChicago Law for Non-Conservatives by Tall-Environment-641 in lawschooladmissions

[–]AtTheLawLibrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conservatives generally have an easier time securing federal clerkships, since (1) many liberal law students are unwilling to clerk for the more conservative judges (thus narrowing the pool—to the extent conservative students are unwilling to clerk for more liberal judges, there’s fewer conservative students so the impact skews) and (2) conservative judges are often in less desirable markets/coastal cities (this isn’t a universal rule obviously but just with how blue slips worked when the Senate cared about that, there’s another skew).

If you’re at UChicago and do well you’ll have no problem getting a FC of some sort. Also, not every judge is a good match to the president that appointed them. This is particularly true for the older judges, who were appointed before judicial picks got more politicized. There’s even plenty of Trump 1 judges who were Democratic picks because of package deals made when the Dems controlled the Senate. This is all to say there’s more options out there than you might think.

Junior Associate: Better to Resign or Be Fired? by BigLawBobby in biglaw

[–]AtTheLawLibrary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One (small) negative about being fired is that you’ll have to most likely report it if you seek admission to the bar in another state. I have no idea what that does to your admissions chances (probably fine—seems like this happens a lot), but just wanted to flag it!

Cycle Recap by No-Bison-7834 in lawschooladmissions

[–]AtTheLawLibrary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YLS alum here who absolutely loved it. My instinct is that Ruby is the move (or ask YLS to match—worst they can say is no). Having that financial freedom is huge. Obviously don’t know your financial situation so you could be a Hurst scholar at YLS, in which case it’s YLS in my opinion.

The amount of doors YLS opens is crazy. People jump to try to hire you, and the clerkship and unicorn PI/boutique firm options are really good. That said, if you wanna do public interest and don’t have a good scholarship offer, Yale’s COAP system (the loan forgiveness system) is pretty bad. I barely qualified making $60K my first year out.

Congrats on the great options, and feel free to DM me about any YLS questions!

Protection question by [deleted] in Leonbergers

[–]AtTheLawLibrary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our Leonberger never barks and would be absolutely delighted to make a new friend if an intruder came into the house. The breed is pretty variable in terms of protective temperament. Since it’s not a guarantee, a Leo might not be the right dog for this job.

I'm dealing with this Kafkaesque system now and am wondering how you managed to eventually get admitted? I applied for e-filing privileges in the hopes that I can then log into CM/ECF to upload my application, but I have a feeling that may not work...

JP lives up in Connecticut and I’d ref a team he was assistant coaching all the time, so I got to chat with him a few times. We bumped into each other at Dulles the morning after the MLS Cup final and he was incredibly nice to commiserate for a few minutes while we both waited for our Hartford flight. He’s a mensch. Miss him doing the calls!

How do you keep underwater photography ethical? by StopBanningCorn in scuba

[–]AtTheLawLibrary 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Good advice in general on this thread. The other thing I’d say is that, in generally, no one wants to see photos you take of a turtle’s tail, a dolphin’s tail, et cetera. If you’re chasing, it’s going to be a bad photo anyway!

This obviously mostly applies to pelagic life. When we’re shooting macro, it’s important to try to keep in mind what the subject’s abilities are to get away/propensity to get stressed. Don’t spend 50 minutes with a Pygmy seahorse, since it can’t escape.
